DIE SCHLAFENDE VENUS Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 53 x 70 cm. (1471758) (1) (18)

(Leiden 1655–1738 Varmond) Equestrian portrait of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736), wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece and holding a baton, bears signature lower left: Car… Moor, oil on canvas, 101.5 x 80.5 cm, framed Provenance: possibly Collection of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736), Stadtpalais, Vienna; with Raphael Chiapetta, Aix-en-Provence, 1979; art market, France; where acquired by the present owner Literature: possibly L. Auer, J. Black, Ein neu entdecktes Inventar der Gemäldesammlung Prinz Eugens, in: Mitteilungen des Österreichischen Staatsarchivs, vol. XXXVIII, 1985, pp. 344–345 (possibly by 1736, The Collection of Prince Eugene of Savoy, Vienna, his city palace at the Himmelpfortgasse, Cabinet XI, no. 3: ‘Un autre [portrait] peint en Hollande par Chevalier Moore’); P. Fowler, P. Bakker, Carel de Moor 1655–1738. His life and work. A Catalogue Raisonné, Leiden 2024, p. 220, no. P A83, illustrated (as Carel de Moor) The present equestrian portrait of Prince Eugene of Savoy depicts one of the most significant military commanders of the Holy Roman Empire and the Habsburg Monarchy. Painted around 1710, this work captures Eugene’s commanding presence and strategic acumen during the War of the Spanish Succession, in which he played a decisive role alongside John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Prince Eugene of Savoy is set against a dramatic battlefield backdrop, the portrait follows the Baroque tradition of equestrian portraiture, mastered and developed by Rubens and Van Dyck. The Prince leans elegantly backwards, turning towards the viewer, while the white Lipizzaner stallion rears slightly from the ground. This dynamic pose of the horse, in dressage terms, is called the levade; however, strictly speaking, the horse should hold the lower part of its front legs closer to its torso than depicted in the present painting. To control such a noble yet powerful animal and have it execute a perfect levade symbolised the sitter’s natural authority over his troops and displayed his talents as both a ruler and a commander. In his right hand, the sitter holds a baton, a commander’s symbol frequently seen in military portraiture. A subtle yet powerful detail is the presence of a bird carrying an olive branch, a classical symbol of peace, introducing a contrast between war and reconciliation. De Moor’s meticulous technique and refined use of light and texture contribute to a composition that transcends mere representation, offering a reflection on leadership and historical legacy. Born in Leiden, Carel de Moor trained under prominent the masters Gerrit Dou, Frans van Mieris, Godfried Schalcken, and Abraham van den Tempel before becoming a distinguished member of the Leiden Guild of Saint Luke. The artist was considered among the foremost of Dutch artists, primarily as a portraitist, at the close of the seventeenth and start of the eighteenth century. Before developing his mature style, he was a reinterpreter of the motifs and compositions of the preceding generation of the Leiden Fijnschilder school, including two of the aforementioned masters. He founded the ‘Liedsche Tekenakademie’ together with Willem van Mieris and Jacob van Toorenvliet.

(Leiden 1656–1738 Warmond) An Allegory of Love, a couple in a garden near a fountain with an elegant company, signed lower right: MOOR f, oil on panel, 70.4 x 52 cm, framed Provenance: Private collection, Belgium; sale, Christie’s, Amsterdam, 13 October 2009, lot 49; with Johnny van Haeften, London; where acquired by the present owner Carel de Moor was considered among the foremost of Dutch artists, primarily as a portraitist, at the close of the seventeenth and start of the eighteenth century. Before developing his mature style, he was a reinterpreter of the motifs and compositions of the preceding generation of the Leiden Fijnschilder school. His formation in the workshops of Gerrit Dou and Frans van Mieris may be seen in the details and ambience of the present lot. He founded the ‘Liedsche Tekenakademie’ together with Willem van Mieris and Jacob van Toorenvliet. The present allegory is typical of his courtly manner which found favour with noble circles, leading him to be Knighted by Emperor Charles VI in 1714. The present canvas is unusual for de Moor as it numbers among one of his few genre-pieces, which are not always as refined as his portraits. The current composition is notable for having the same tenderness and attention to detail that he exercised in depicting his noble sitters or in his history paintings, as may be seen in the facial expressions of the amorous couple and African boy in the foreground. The ‘vrolijk gezelschap’ or Merry Company genre, popular in both the Dutch republic and Flanders, reached its apotheosis in Peter Paul Rubens’s Garden of Love (now conserved in the Prado) with sculptural and architectural detail such as an ornate gateway with herms, redolent of the one in the present picture. De Moor has embellished this archway by adding two river gods on top, which appear to be derived from those then in the Belvedere in the Vatican. Another source of inspiration seems likely to be the engravings of the Farnese Flora from Jan de Bisschop’s Signorum Veterum Icones. On the left of the composition, however, the statue of Eros appears to be the invention of the artist.
