Morach is best known for elongated, abstract landscapes. For this poster, he uses a totally different but equally original approach. He presents the viewer with two ordinary men, depicted in an almost cut-out, collage-like fashion. They are dressed alike (albeit in different colors) and they are reading newspapers that show a PKZ ad on the back. Adding to the unusual, hypnotic effect of the image, is the fact that the men are both placed at a slight angle, ensuring that when three or more of these posters were posted side by side, the visual effect would have been very strong. Der damals 25-jährige Otto Morach verbrachte die Jahre 1912 und 1913 zusammen mit Arnold Brügger in Paris. Dort kam er mit den neusten künstlerischen Strömungen in Kontakt. 1914 plante Morach eine weitere Reise nach Paris, doch der Ausbruch des ersten Weltkrieges durchkreuzte dieses Vorhaben. Er wohnte im Haus seiner Eltern, gab Zeichenunterricht an der Gewerbeschule und litt gemäss seinen Briefen aus dieser Zeit an der empfundenen Enge. Dazu kamen viele Monate, in denen er Militärdienst als Soldat an der Grenze leisten musste. Und trotzdem wurden die Jahre zwischen 1914 und 1918 zu den künstlerisch fruchtbarsten seines gesamten Schaffens. Er verarbeitete nun intensiv die Eindrücke, die er in Paris gesammelt hatte.

In good condition Erläuterungen / Comments Beeinflusst durch das Buch von Karl Scheffler "Der Geist der Gotik", welches sich im Besitz von Otto Morach befand, brachte der Künstler den dort bezeichneten "heroischen Affekt" im vorliegenden Werk überzeugend zum Ausdruck. Die expressive Architekturdarstellung entsprach dem damaligen Empfinden der Zeit, wie zum Beispiel Filmkulissen des Deutschen Stummfilms zeigen. So wurden Ansichten von Grossstadtstrassen oder von hohen Räumen expressiv mit schiefen, statisch unmöglichen Wänden dargestellt. Farblich lehnt sich Morach, wie im vorliegenden Werk, an das Ideal der modernen Glasmaler der zwanziger Jahre an, die die Kunst von Früh- und Hochgotik mit ihrem leuchtenden Blau-Rot-Akkord zum Vorbild nahmen Influenced by Karl Scheffler's book "Der Geist der Gotik" (The Spirit of Gothic), which was in Otto Morach's possession, the artist convincingly expressed the "heroic affect" described there in the present work. The expressive architectural depiction corresponded to the sensibilities of the time, as shown, for example, in film sets of the German silent film. Dampferfahrten und Wanderungen, auch zum Brienzersee gehörten zum täglichen Programm. Es entstanden zahlreiche Skizzen und Zeichnungen. Unser Bild zeigt den Blick Richtung Interlaken, mit dem Niesen in der Ferne. Morach trained as a schoolteacher before studying painting in Bern. He went on to study in Paris, Munich, Dresden and Berlin. Back in Switzerland, he joined the Dadaists, Janco, Arp and Picabia exhibiting in the group Das Neue Leben. In addition to his painting, he was also a pioneer of work for puppet theaters with Sophie Taeuber-Arp. He designed fewer than ten posters, each with a decidedly modernist approach.
