Magnificent portrait depicting a young African man, executed with extraordinary pictorial sensitivity and a remarkable capacity for direct observation. The work concentrates the artist’s entire attention on the sitter’s face, dispensing with anecdotal elements in order to focus exclusively on expression, light, and human presence. The intensity of the gaze is undoubtedly one of the most striking aspects of the composition. With remarkably economical means, the painter succeeds in conveying a profound sense of inner life, capturing the individuality of the sitter with exceptional subtlety. Equally noteworthy is the treatment of the mouth, slightly parted, a device that lends naturalness to the figure and avoids any sense of academic rigidity. Particular interest lies in the chromatic construction of the flesh tones. Far from relying on conventional solutions, Moragas models the volumes through a sophisticated interplay of warm tones and cool reflections, creating in the illuminated areas almost metallic or silvery highlights that endow the figure with extraordinary plastic strength. The painted surface acquires an almost sculptural quality, evoking the appearance of polished bronze illuminated by soft light. The barely sketched background and the absence of narrative elements allow the viewer to observe the artist’s creative process directly, transforming the painting into an exceptional testimony of studio practice and life study. Tomàs Moragas i Torras was born in Girona in 1837 and developed much of his artistic training in Barcelona. He studied at the School of La Llotja, where he became acquainted with José Tapiró and Mariano Fortuny, maintaining a close friendship with the latter and later joining his intimate circle during his years in Rome. Upon his return to Barcelona in 1876, he pursued an active career as both artist and teacher, becoming professor at the School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi and at the School of Arts and Crafts of Vilanova i la Geltrú. He also played an important role in the artistic life of Catalonia, serving as artistic advisor to the Barcelona Universal Exposition of 1888. His oeuvre encompassed both Fortuny-inspired genre scenes and Orientalist subjects, among which Moroccan Horseman, now preserved in the Museu d’Art Modern de Barcelona, is particularly noteworthy. This biographical information is summarised from the Museo Nacional del Prado, based on Fernández Martínez, D., Enciclopedia del Museo Nacional del Prado, Vol. V, Madrid, 2006, p. 1578. Beyond its documentary interest, the present work stands out for the extraordinary dignity with which the sitter is portrayed. Far removed from anecdotal exoticism, the figure is conceived as an individual and profoundly human presence. The artist does not seek to describe a type; he seeks to portray a person. It is precisely in this capacity for direct observation, in the freshness of execution, and in the psychological intensity of the gaze that much of the power of this exceptional study resides. He then moved to Rome, where he shared a studio with Mariano Fortuny. After almost a decade in the Italian capital he went to Paris in 1866, where he settled until his definitive return to Barcelona in 1876. In Spain, his teaching work stood out, as founder of the School of Watercolorists and professor at the School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi in Barcelona and at the Academy of Arts and Crafts of Vilanova i la Geltrú, as well as his role as artistic advisor at the Universal Exposition of Barcelona in 1888. In this scene, with his particular plastic skill, Moragas takes up again the romantic genre of the ruin to propose an emotional approach to the archaeological memory. Tomás Moragas moved to Barcelona in his youth, where he began his training working in the workshop of Jose Pomar LLaró, who introduced him to the technique of engraving and goldsmithing. Later he continued his studies at the Escuela de La Lonja, in Barcelona, where he was taught by Claudio Lorenzale and Pablo Milá Fontanals and met Jose Tapiró Y Baró and Mariano Fortuny. He then moved to Rome, where he shared a studio with Mariano Fortuny. After almost a decade in the Italian capital he went to Paris in 1866, where he settled until his definitive return to Barcelona in 1876. In Spain he was an outstanding teacher, founding the School of Watercolourists and teaching at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and at the Academy of Arts and Crafts in Vilanova i la Geltrú, as well as his role as artistic advisor at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona in 1888. Works by him can be found in the Museo del Prado, the MACBA, the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña and the Museo de Historia de la Ciudad de Barcelona, among many others. His painting is notable for an aesthetic style that follows to some extent the aesthetics of Fortuny, with a theme of mansions, he practised a highly popular commercial style of painting, with representations of an orientalist nature, among which the work in the Barcelona Museum of Modern Art is particularly noteworthy.

Tomás Moragas (Gerona, 1837-Barcelona, 1906) Calle de Mequinez. Óleo sobre lienzo. Firmado y fechado en 1880. Se trasladó en su juventud a Barcelona donde comenzó a trabajar en el taller de José Pomar Llaró y a la vez estudiando en la Llotja, donde tuvo como profesores a Claudio Lorenzale y Pablo Milà i Fontanals. Se traslada a Roma teniendo por compañeros a Tapiró, Agrasot y Fortuny. Tras su estancia en Roma funda una academia de dibujo y pintura siendo nombrado profesor de la Escuela de Bellas Artes y Oficios de Villanueva i la Geltrú. Practicó en su pintura la temática orientalista siguiendo la estética de Fortuny. Se conservan obras suyas en el Museo del Prado y el Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña entre otros. In this battle scene, the Moroccan horsemen, wrapped in white tunics fluttering in the wind, appear highly idealised, as if they were characters from a legend. Although the artist may have taken the Spanish-Arab clashes that had taken place thirty years earlier as a reference, the painter does not intend to bear witness to a historical conflict but, on the contrary, to distil it into a romantic image with mythical overtones. The din of the battlefield caused by the galloping impetus of a large number of horsemen raises clouds of dust that contribute to plunging the scene into a reverie. Moragas was an Orientalist painter, fascinated by Maghrebi culture and types, and this is evident in the mystery that emanates from the figures. The equine anatomy has been magnificently resolved, as has the atmospheric perspective work, which is evident in the dynamic effect created by the advance of the warriors emerging from the horizon. In the foreground, a dying body lies on the ground. It probably identifies the "renegade" of the title (the one who changed sides). He has been defeated by a horseman whose black cloak distinguishes him from the rest of the Arabs. On the right, the enemy army can be seen in the distance. The chromatic iridescence and the shifts of light sublimate the landscape, while the atmospheric work does not neglect the individualised work of each of the figures, their anatomies, expressions and gestures.
