Artistically inclined as a child, Moran was influenced by the work of Charles Dana Gibson and James M. Flagg. Jul. 29, 2023

Earl Moran Pin-Up Calendar Pages for Kessler Beer

          Est: $250 - $500

Featured in this lot are four (4) 1951 Earl Moran Pin-Up Calendar Pages for Kessler Brewing Company of Helena, Montana. Months include July, August, September and October. Printed by Brown & Bigelow of St. Paul, Minnesota, each month had a different "title" for the model. In an interesting association, Kessler included a paragraph of Montana historical information right below the pin-up image, followed by a sales pitch for their beer. Earl Moran was a noted American 20th-century pin-up and glamour artist. Moran signed an exclusive contract with Brown and Bigelow in 1932 and by 1937, his pinups had sold millions of calendars for the company. In 1940, Life ran a feature article entitled "Speaking of Pictures" which mostly focused on Moran's work and made him a national celebrity. The calendar pages are made of heavy card stock making them rigid and suitable for wall hanging. These calendars are in good overall condition, with some creasing, age tanning visible. Each measures 10"L x 4.75"W.*

Earl Moran Marilyn Monroe Pin-Up Oil on Canvas

          Est: $20,000 - $40,000

Earl Moran (American, 1893-1984). Oil on canvas painting depicting a pin-up nude Marilyn Monroe against a green background. Signed along the lower right quadrant. Moran, one of the most renowned pin-up artists of his time, generally worked exclusively in pastels and rarely painted oil paintings. This work is one of the best examples of his depiction of Marilyn Monroe, posed bathed in sunlight on a cushion. Moran's association with Monroe began in February 1946 when Blue Book Agency sent young Norma Jean Baker to his studio. He paid her $10 an hour to pose for him and she quickly became on of his favorite subjects to paint. He thought that she could pose better than any other model and said in a later interview, "Emotionally she did everything right. She expressed just what I wanted." When they last met in 1954 on the set of "There's No Business Like Show Business" she hugged him and told him that she loved the way that he made her look. Moran studied at the Chicago Art Institute before moving on to the famed Art Students League in Manhatten where he learned from Vincent Drumond, Robert Henri, Thomas Fogarty, and George Bridgman. He eventually signed an exclusive contract to paint for the calendar company Brown and Bigelow in 1932. In 1940 Life magazine ran a feature titled "Speaking of Pictures" which focused almost solely on Moran's work. This launched him to the status of a national celebrity and he eventually moved to Hollywood in 1946 to paint celebrities including Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe. Around 1955 he moved to Las Vegas to devote his time to fine-art subjects with a focus on nude portraits. He would go on to paint until 1982 when his eyesight failed him.

Earl Moran Pin Up Girl Art

          Est: $50 - $100

Nice group of one hundred and seven (107) pin up girl, ertotica arcade and Real Photo Postcards many by Earl Moran. Some full or partial nudes. Most WWII era. A wonderful collection. Typical condition. used, some have minor bends, minor tape. Earl Steffa Moran (1893-1984), born in Belle Plaine, Iowa, was a 20th-century pin-up and glamour artist. Moran's first instruction in art came under the direction of John Stich, an elderly German artist who also taught the great illustrator W.H.D. Koerner. Moran also studied with Walter Biggs at the Chicago Art Institute. In 1941, Moran helped the magazine publisher, Robert Harrison, to launch a new men's magazine called Beauty Parade, and he later contributed pin-ups to other Harrison magazines such as Flirt, Wink and Giggles. In 1946, Moran moved to Hollywood though he had already painted many movie stars including Betty Grable, for publicity posters. Soon after his arrival, he interviewed a young starlet named Norma Jean Dougherty who wanted to model for him. For the next four years, Marilyn Monroe posed for Moran and the two became friends. She always credited him with making her legs look better than they were as she felt they were too thin. Moran's work during this time period is now his most valuable; a Moran Marilyn pastel sold for $83,650, nearly doubling the previous record for one of his works, when the Craig MacMillan collection was sold at Heritage Auctions in February 2011

Earl Moran was a master of pastels, though he showed little if any influence of reigning Brown & Bigelow star Rolf Armstrong, whose domain he encroached upon in the '30s. Moran was soon a superstar himself, creating lively, sexy girls whose relationship with the viewer was seldom a teasing one. Unlike Gil Elvgren and others, Moran did not continually re-work one type of situation, and his pinups have more variety than any other major contributor to the field. Moran was a photographer, as well as an illustrator which lent well in his portrait pinups by giving him a great knowledge of lighting and shadows. In 1940, LIFE Magazine featured Moran in their article "Speaking of Pictures" and the American audience was in awe. Breaking in via advertising work for Sears-Roebuck, Moran went on to magazine illustration, movie posters ("Something for the Boys" 1944) and even co-published with Robert Harrison an early "girlie" magazine, Beauty Parade, contributing covers, sometimes under his middle name non de plume, "Steffa", and he later contributed pinups to other Harrison magazines such as Flirt, Wink and Giggles. Soon after his arrival, he interviewed a young starlet named Norma Jean Dougherty who wanted to model for him. After a move to Las Vegas (circa 1955) and several years of living in the fast lane, Moran decided to devote his time to painting fine-art subjects in oils, with nudes as his favorite theme. Signing with Aaron Brothers Galleries, he painted for collectors until 1982, when his eyesight failed.
