Oil on Canvas Coastal Cliff Scene by Edward Moran (1829-1901). In good condition. Had a notation on the back that was painted over in white. Signed. Framed size 21.25" x 25.5". Sight size: 15.25" x 19". A similar work was recently offered by Cutler Auctions. This piece has been in the possession of our consignor for years. Although the location is unknown, Moran painted similar cliff scenes on at least a few other occasions. Part two of a single-owner Lancaster, Ohio collection. We sold the first part of this collection last July. All sales final. Invoices above $2500 must be paid with cash, cashier's check or wire transfer. In-house shipping is available. Pickup is Tuesday, Oct. 15 from 1 pm to 3 pm in Carroll, OH or by appointment by Nov. 1. We can provide in-house shipping for this item. We pack once the lot is paid for. Edward Moran (1829-1901) Oil on canvas, signed lower left "Edward Moran, piece measures 20 x 16 and 27 x 24 inches with gilt wood style frame. Edward Moran was an English-born American painter who specialized in marine art. He is best known for his series of thirteen paintings on the maritime history of the United States. Edward Moran grew up in a family of weavers in Lancashire, England, where he learned to draw from a street artist. He sketched on the fabric on his weaving loom until his exasperated family told him to stop weaving and take up art. They moved to the United States in 1844 and lived in Philadelphia, where Moran studied with the artist James Hamilton. In 1868, Moran submitted a group of paintings to be shown at the Pennsylvania Academy. He was unhappy with the placement of his work, however, and on “varnishing day” cut one of his paintings from the canvas and painted over the rest with an opaque wash. The outraged directors demanded an apology and threatened to leave the damaged paintings in the exhibition. The scandal made its way into the newspapers and people clamored to see the infamous defaced paintings. Moran never apologized to the directors and eventually resigned as a member of the academy. He and his brother studied and shared a studio in Philadelphia and then both returned for a time to England. There copying the paintings of J M W Turner heavily influenced them.
