Watercolor on Board
Measure 19"in H x 25 1/2"in W and 22"in H x 28 1/2"in W with frame

Biography: Giorgio Morandi was born in Bologna to Andrea Morandi and Maria Maccaferri. He lived first on Via Lame where his brother Giuseppe (who died in 1903) and his sister Anna were born. The family then moved to Via Avesella where his two other sisters were born, Dina in 1900 and Maria Teresa in 1906. From 1907 to 1913 he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna]. After the death of his father in 1909, the family moved to Via Fondazza and Morandi became the head of the family. At the Accademia, which based its traditions on 14th-century painting, Morandi taught himself to etch by studying books on Rembrandt. He was excellent at his studies, although his professors disapproved of the changes in his style during his final two years at the Accademia. Even though he lived his whole life in Bologna, Morandi was influenced by the works of Cezanne, Derain, and Picasso. In 1910 he visited Florence, where the works of artists such as Giotto, Masaccio, Piero Della Francesca, and Paolo Uccello made a profound impression on him. He had a brief digression into a Futurist style in 1914. In that same year, Morandi was appointed instructor of drawing for elementary schools in Bologna a post he held until 1929. In 1929 Giorgio Morandi illustrated the work Il sole a picco by Vincenzo Cardarelli , winner of the Bagutta Award. From 1930 to 1956, Morandi was a professor of etching at Accademia di Belle Arti. The 1948 Venice Biennale awarded him first prize for painting. He visited Paris for the first time in 1956, and in 1957 he won the grand prize in Sao Paulo's Biennial. Quiet and polite, both in his private and public life, Morandi was much talked about in Bologna for his enigmatic yet very optimistic personality. Morandi lived on Via Fondazza, in Bologna, with his three sisters Anna, Dina and Maria Teresa. Morandi died of lung cancer on June 18, 1964.

In the Manner of Giorgio Morandi (1890 - 1964) Italy

Lot 29: In the Manner of Giorgio Morandi (1890 - 1964) Italy

Auction Date: Jul 07, 2021

Estimate: $1,500 - $2,000

Description: In the Manner Of Giorgio Morandi (1890 - 1964) Italy

Watercolor on Board.
Measure 19"in H x 25 1/2"in W and 22"in H x 28 1/2"in W with frame.
Giorgio Morandi was born in Bologna to Andrea Morandi and Maria Maccaferri. He lived first on Via Lame where his brother Giuseppe (who died in 1903) and his sister Anna were born. The family then moved to Via Avesella where his two other sisters were born, Dina in 1900 and Maria Teresa in 1906. From 1907 to 1913 he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna [Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna]. In that same year, Morandi was appointed instructor of drawing for elementary schools in Bologna — a post he held until 1929. In 1929 Giorgio Morandi illustrated the work Il sole a picco by Vincenzo Cardarelli , winner of the Bagutta Award. From 1930 to 1956, Morandi was a professor of etching at Accademia di Belle Arti. Lot 40: Giorgio Morandi, Italian 1890-1964- Natura Morta (recto/verso) 1962; pencil, signed on the reve

Auction Date: May 26, 2021

Estimate: £6,000 - £8,000

Description: Giorgio Morandi, Italian 1890-1964- Natura Morta (recto/verso) 1962; pencil, signed on the reverse, 24x33cm (ARR) (VAT charged on hammer price) Provenance: Private Collection, Bologna; Sotheby's, London 26th October 1994, lot 36; Private Collection, London Literature: Efrem Tavoni, 'Morandi Disegni. Catalogo generale', Milan: Electa, 1994 p. 227, no. 1962/69 Note: This work is by the twentieth-century Italian artist Giorgio Morandi. Despite studying the work of Italian masters whilst at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, Morandi was most strongly influenced by that of later French artists, such as Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, and Andre Derain. The impact of these artists on Morandi is instantly evident from his work, which almost exclusively consisted of still lifes. This piece exhibits all of the most recognisable features of Morandi’s work, including his tendency to strip back his representation of the objects around him to their most basic forms, imbuing his pictures with a meditative simplicity, and revealing his role as a significant precursor of the Minimalist movement.   Morandi was awarded the first prize for painting at the 1948 Venice Biennale, followed by the grand prize at the 1957 Sao Paolo Biennale. Exhibitions of Morandi’s work have been held at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels. His work is currently held at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

42.5x52x1cm (including frame) This work is in a double sided glazed pine frame. The frame needs to be replaced or repaired, and is in very poor condition. Regarding the work itself, it has not been examined out of the frame. However it is evident the piece has been stuck down on the corners, the side stuck down is the side that doesn't have the signature. The page is wavy, which is what one would expect, and there are some minor marks to the surface, particularly some faint yellow marks under the signature. Overall the piece appears to be in good condition.

In the Manner of Giorgio Morandi (1890 - 1964) Italy

Lot 99: In the Manner of Giorgio Morandi (1890 - 1964) Italy

Auction Date: May 16, 2021

Estimate: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: In the Manner of Giorgio Morandi (1890 - 1964) Italy.
