BIOGRAPHY: Walter Moras was significantly influenced by the marine and landscape painter Hermann Eschke, in whose studio he received his first training. In 1876, he exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin for the first time. By 1910, he regularly exhibited at the Great Berlin Art exhibitions. Moras especially painted in Pomerania and Mecklenburg. He traveled to Norway, Italy, and the Netherlands. Active at a time when the plein air painting was blooming, he was somehow influenced by Impressionist models. In his later works, he painted large-format autumn depictions and nuanced winter landscapes. Moras' paintings are regularly traded on art auctions

WALTER MORAS (Germany, 1856-1925). "German village". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 59 x 99,5 cm; 93,5 x 134 cm. Walter Moras immortalized, with a palette rich in autumnal shades, the beautiful villages of Brandenburg. This painting probably depicts a village in this German region. The rustic architecture is integrated into the landscape forming an organic whole. The sky lightly veiled by frayed clouds filters the silver lights that cover the vegetation with a melancholic and poetic touch. Walter Moras was a German landscape painter who specialized in winter scenes and mountain villages. He was significantly influenced by the marine and landscape painter Hermann Eschke (1823-1900). In Berlin, where Moras was born, he obtained his artistic training in Eschke's studio. In 1876, he held his first exhibition at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. From then on, Moras's works were exhibited continuously at major art exhibitions in Berlin, and he also participated in fairs and exhibitions in Bremen, Oldenburg and Munich. On Eschke's recommendation, the young Moras painted scenes in Mecklenburg and on the rugged German island of Rügen. He also painted in Norway, the Netherlands and Italy. However, many of his works were created in rural Brandenburg and later in Spreewald, both in the Berlin region. He hardly painted in Berlin, although he was described as a "Berlin painter" all his life. Moras' style was realistic, simple yet refined. Some of his evocative landscapes show impressionistic influences. In later years he became known for large-format a plein air scenes illuminated by warm autumn colors. His numerous winter landscapes, which were composed with great attention to detail, also liked to show warm tones amidst a snowy environment. Moras was not a member of the Berlin Artists' Association, nor was he involved in any of the northern German artists' colonies, although he was sometimes invited to paint in these associations.

WINTERWALD IM MORGENLICHT Öl auf Leinwand. 80 x 120 cm. Rechts unten signiert „W. Moras.“. In farblich passendem Rahmen. Stimmungsvolle Wiedergabe eines in den ersten Sonnenstrahlen des beginnenden Tages liegenden, tief verschneiten Waldes, der sich teils in einem idyllisch schlängelndem Bachlauf wiederspiegelt. Qualitätvolle Malerei in der typischen Manier des bekannten Künstlers. Anmerkung: Seine Ausbildung erhielt er im Atelier des Marine- und Landschaftsmaler Hermann Eschke. 1876 stellte er zum ersten Mal auf der Ausstellung der Königlichen Akademie der Künste in Berlin aus. Bis 1910 war er fast ständig auf den Großen Berliner Kunstausstellungen vertreten. Er gehörte zu den naturnahen Landschaftsmalern, deren Schaffen mit der Blütezeit der Freilichtmalerei zusammenfiel. Er schuf zudem großformatige Winterlandschaften, die sehr sorgfältig komponiert sind und im Schnee besonders subtile Tönungen aufweisen, so wie das vorliegende Gemälde. (1410621) (18)

MORAS, WALTER (Berlin 1856-1925 Bad Harzburg), painting: " River landscape with fishing boats and walkers", oil on cardboard, signed "W. Moras" lower left. The marine and landscape painter Moras studied under Hermann Eschke in Berlin and found his motifs in Berlin, on the Baltic coast, on Rügen and in Pomerania, among other places. Walter Moras 1856 Berlin – 1925 Harzburg Öl auf Papier, auf Malpappe montiert. Signiert u.re. "W Moras.". Im Passepartout in einem schwarzen Schleiflack-Hohlkehlrahmen gerahmt, die Sichtleiste mit reliefiertem, goldfarbenen Festonkranzdekor. Walter Moras führte das vorliegende Motiv mehrfach aus, zumeist als Ölgemälde im Kabinettformat. Wir danken Herrn Alfried Nehring, Ahrenshoop, für freundliche Hinweise. Walter Moras 1856 Berlin – 1925 Harzburg Deutscher Maler. Ausbildung beim Landschaftsmaler Hermann Eschke. Darauf folgten mehrere Studienaufenthalte in Norwegen, Italien und den Niederlanden. Moras malte bevorzugt Landschaften auf Rügen, in Mecklenburg und im märkischen Umland von Berlin. Seine Werke zeigte er u.a auf den Ausstellungen des Bremer- und Oldenburger Kunstvereins, sowie auf der Internationalen Münchener Kunstausstellung.
