    JOSEP MORELL MACÍAS (Sant Esteve d'en Bas, Girona, 1899 - Barcelona, 1949). "Dancer". Original sketch for a poster. Watercolor on paper. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 14 x 8 cm; 26 x 22 cm (frame). The author of this work offers us a cheerful and dynamic scene starring an intense and contrasting color, enlivened by a passionate light treatment. A flamenco dancer is represented in a white ruffled costume, worked with energetic and totally dynamic strokes, which do not need a detailed description to reflect the movement and the sense of dance. Thus, the neat fabrics are decomposed in pure light, fold with the movement and highlight the physical presence of the woman, which directly affects the main figure. The costumbrista scene presents a cheerful palette, in keeping with the festive tone of the print.

    Attributed to JOSEP MORELL MACÍAS (Sant Esteve d'en Bas, Girona, 1899 - Barcelona, 1949). "The fishmonger", c. 1920. Watercolor on paper. Measurements: 13 x 11 cm; 38 x 33 cm (frame). This work is part of the rise of regionalism in Spain in the second half of the nineteenth century and the first third of the twentieth century, developed an art of romantic heritage, costumbrista and realistic and detailed invoice, which focused on the representation of issues, themes and characters that reflect a new sense of folklore. In this context, the painters sought to reflect the types and customs of their own land, which made it different and unique, thus vindicating their own roots and, above all, the traditions and ways of dressing and behaving that were threatened by the notable growth of urban areas and the imposition of new fashions brought from outside. Art, fundamentally in its pictorial aspect, thus becomes in a certain way a vehicle of expression capable of making regional peculiarities known to the rest of the nation.

    In order to promote the “Book Day” held in Barcelona in 1931, Morell created a design with a colourful cascade of stylised books. This cultural exhibition contributed to the birth of catalan festivity of San Jorge (April 23th, the day of the rose and of the book), which later spread all around Spain. Lithograph poster printed by Graf. Bobes, linen backed, A condition. Dimensions in inches: 28 x 19.7''. Con el fin de promover el "Día del Libro" que se celebró en Barcelona en 1931, Morell creó un diseño con una cascada colorida de libros estilizados. Los inicios de ésta celebración en Barcelona, dieron pie a establecer el 23 de Abril, festividad de San Jorge, como el día del libro y de la rosa, que poco a poco se ha ido extendiendo al resto de España.
