An evocative artist's proof by American artist Franklin Townsend Morgan depicting a lone sailboat on a calm harbor, petite shrubberies scatter the sides of the background while dramatic clouds fill the night sky above. The towering stands tall above the low horizon of the sea, as a worker is shown tending to items on the ship and another stands holding the sail. During the Great Depression, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration sent Moran to Key West along with a group of fellow artists with the goal to lift Key West out of bankruptcy by creating a touristic image of beauty through the creation of art showing the nature and workings of the island. This etching was likely created as part of that effort. Size of image: 11.5" W x 8.5" H (29.2 cm x 21.6 cm); of frame: 20" W x 15" H (50.8 cm x 38.1 cm) Franklin Townsend Morgan, born in Brooklyn, New York, studied at the Pratt Institute and the Art Students League, where he was taught by influential artists such as Dow, Bridgman, and Pennell. An accomplished painter, printmaker, and illustrator, Morgan began his career in Philadelphia, where he was associated with the Sketch Club, the Print Club, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His work documented cities and notable sites across the United States and the West Indies, including a renowned 1934 series of social protest prints depicting Pittsburgh tenements. During the Great Depression, he worked under the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) in Key West, Florida, producing a significant body of prints capturing the island’s architecture, natural beauty, and marine life to promote tourism and aid the struggling community. From 1935 to 1941, he served as director of the Key West Art Center. Morgan’s award-winning prints are held in prestigious collections, including the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Treasury Department of the United States. Franklin Townsend Morgan Oil on Canvas “Destroyers”. Signed F. Townsend Morgan. (1883-1965) Born in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and the Art Students League, New York City. He began printmaking in 1912 and produced prints of the Far West, New England, the Atlantic Seaboard, Florida and the West Indies. Active in the Pennsylvania art circles, Morgan worked with Joseph Pennell, further developing his style of etching. Morgan became nationally recognized for his work and received numerous awards including Philadelphia Sketch Club, Print Club of Philadelphia, Art Alliance of Philadelphia, and the Society of American Etchers. In 1936, he was included in “Prints” as one of the outstanding American print makers. For several years he was director at the Key West art center and was also artist-in-residence at St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland. Works : New York Public Library, Library of Congress, Art Museums in NJ and PA, U.S. Treasury Department.
