However, during the early part of his residency he was much more interested in the "sights and sounds of Paris" than in academic studies, but eventually he settled into studying the Old Masters and also studying at the French government school at Le Havre. However, not feeling any great sense of accomplishment and not wanting to return to England as a 'failure', he spent the 1840s as a sailor. In 1851, he arrived penniless in Brooklyn, New York City, a place he died in 1900 and where he had had remained for most of the rest of his career. Between 1855 and 1860, he intermittently attended the school of the National Academy of Design but later confessed to writer Theodore Dreiser that he had done "very little studying" during that time and wished he had devoted more time to his education. In 1852, he had begun submitting paintings to the annual Academy exhibitions. He became accomplished and earned a distinguished reputation for portrait painting, but today is best known for his domestic genre subjecs, especially women, young girls and and child figures. At age fourteen, he went to Paris and studied in the atelier of Thomas Couture. However, during the early part of his residency he was much more interested in the "sights and sounds of Paris" than in academic studies, but eventually he settled into studying the Old Masters and also studying at the French government school at Le Havre. However, not feeling any great sense of accomplishment and not wanting to return to England as a 'failure', he spent the 1840s as a sailor. In 1851, he arrived penniless in Brooklyn, New York City, a place he died in 1900 and where he had had remained for most of the rest of his career. Between 1855 and 1860, he intermittently attended the school of the National Academy of Design but later confessed to writer Theodore Dreiser that he had done "very little studying" during that time and wished he had devoted more time to his education. In 1852, he had begun submitting paintings to the annual Academy exhibitions. He became accomplished and earned a distinguished reputation for portrait painting, but today is best known for his domestic genre subjecs, especially women, young girls and and child figures. Upon his death, the minutes of the National Academy described Morgan "as a painter of 'sterling merit' whose treatment of subjects 'reflected the sensitiveness and refinement of his own nature.'

William Morgan (1774 c. 1826) was a resident of Batavia, New York, whose disappearance and presumed murder in 1826 ignited a powerful movement against the Freemasons, a fraternal society that had become influential in the United States. After Morgan announced his intention to publish a book exposing Freemasonry's secrets, he was arrested on trumped-up charges. He disappeared soon after and was believed to have been kidnapped and killed by Masons from western New York. The allegations surrounding Morgan's disappearance and presumed death sparked a public outcry and inspired Thurlow Weed and others to harness the discontent by founding the new Anti-Masonic Party in opposition to President Andrew Jackson's Democrats. It ran a presidential candidate in 1832 but was nearly defunct by 1835. On September 11, 1826, Morgan was arrested for supposed nonpayment of a loan and allegedly stealing a shirt and a tie; according to the laws of the time he could be held in debtors' prison until restitution was made, which would have made it more difficult to publish his book. Morgan was jailed in Canandaigua, and when Miller learned of this, he went to the jail to pay the debt and secure Morgan's release. Morgan was released, but then re-arrested and charged with supposedly failing to pay a two dollar tavern bill. While the jailer was away, a group of men convinced his wife to release Morgan; they walked to a waiting carriage, which arrived two days later at Fort Niagara. Shortly afterwards, Morgan disappeared. Arch Merrill (August 5, 1894 July 15, 1974) was an American journalist, author, and poet sometimes called the "Poet Laureate of Upstate New York". In 1923 Merrill became a copy reader with the Rochester, New York, newspaper the Democrat and Chronicle. He was a reporter for the Rochester Journal-American from 1927 to 1937, and then returned to the Democrat and Chronicle as assistant city editor, and for the next 27 years, as Merrill recalled, he "held nearly every post in the city news room". There, in 1939, he began writing the first of an eventual 1,650 stories and columns for the Sunday Democrat and Chronicle, primarily chronicling the history of Rochester and environs. These articles were collected and expanded to form Merrill's long string of non-fiction books. After retiring in 1963, he continued to write his column, "Arch Merrill's History", for 10 more years. A prolific writer, he was best known for his articles in the Sunday paper on history and folklore of the Genesee Valley and the Finger Lakes of upstate New York. e authored a number of books, most of which are collections of his articles. His 1943 A River Ramble is an account of his walk of the entire length of the Genesee River, along with his notes on local history, folk tales, and people he met along the route.
