George Morland Sold at Auction Prices

Genre Painter, Landscape painter, Naval painter, Miniature painter, b. 1763 - d. 1804

George Morland was born in London in 1763. His oil paintings are just as interesting and captivating as the colorful life that he lived. George Morland painted animals and unsophisticated rural scenes, capturing the lives of people and their everyday happenings. His art collection is large and depicts gypsies, smugglers, animals, and various wildlife.

He studied under his father Henry Morland, who was also a painter. Morland's first exhibition of his work was at the Royal Academy, when he was aged 10. His oil paintings are found in public collections all over the world, constantly reminding his audience of rustic landscapes and towns. Though Morland died in 1804, his animal paintings for sale have managed to preserve an art form that highlights friendship and survival. Buy antique animal paintings from Invaluable and show your love of fauna of all kinds.

    GEORGE MORLAND LANDSCAPE OIL OF AN ANGLER AND HIS COMPANION BESIDE A RIVER

    Est: $1,500 - $3,000

    MORLAND, George (British, 1763-1804), attributed to. Landscape with an Angler and His Companion Beside a River. Oil on panel. 11 7/8" x 9 3/4" panel. George Morland (1763-1804) was an English painter renowned for his vivid depictions of rural life and landscapes heavily inspired by 17th century Dutch painting and Romanticism. Born in London, Morland was the son of artist Henry Robert Morland who introduced him to the world of painting at an early age. His work is celebrated for its detailed and realistic portrayal of country scenes, often featuring peasant life, animals, and rustic settings. Morland’s career was characterized by prolific output, with numerous paintings and prints that gained popularity and commercial success - primarily for the engravers who published Morland’s work. However despite his artistic talent, Morland's life was marked by instability from alcoholism and financial difficulties, finally concluding with his early death at the age of 41.

  • Morland 1780 Painting "Diana Returning from the Hunt"
    Oct. 05, 2024

    Morland 1780 Painting "Diana Returning from the Hunt"

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

    George Morland (British, 1762/63 - 1804) after Peter Paul Rubens. "Diana Returning from the Hunt" miniature painting on ivory, 1780. Signed "Morland 1780" at lower left. A lovely painting on ivory by British artist George Morland after "Diana Returning from the Hunt" by Dutch Master Peter Paul Rubens. The idyllic scene shows the Roman goddess Diana accompanied by her nymphs and hunting dogs as she is greeted by three satyrs who carry a bounty of fruits and vegetables. Intended as a celebration of abundance and the daily rejuvenation of nature, the composition is divided by Diana's spear which symbolically separates the lascivious world of the satyrs from the virtuous realm of Diana and her nymphs. Diana who, as patron and guardian of the virtue of purity, resists every challenge while guiding her companions, and the world of darkness, ruled by the lowest of urges, which is represented by the three satyrs overwhelmed by lust. Size of painting: 5.5" W x 4.125" H (14 cm x 10.5 cm); of frame: 8" W x 7.4" H (20.3 cm x 18.8 cm) George Morland was an English painter. His early work was influenced by Francis Wheatley, but after the 1790s he came into his own style. His best compositions focus on rustic scenes: farms and hunting; smugglers and gypsies; and rich, textured landscapes informed by Dutch Golden Age painting. Much of his work was intended for reproduction in prints, from which his publishers made a good deal more money than he did. Despite being a heavy drinker who enjoyed a rackety lifestyle, he was enormously prolific, though the quality of his work increasingly suffered. After many troubles with debts in his last decade, he died at the age of 41. This is an ESA antique exempt piece of ivory and cannot be sold internationally or to anyone residing in the states of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington.     George Morland,  British 1763-1804-  Travellers in a wooded encampment;

    Est: £600 - £800

    George Morland,  British 1763-1804-  Travellers in a wooded encampment;  oil on canvas, indistinctly signed 'G Morland' (lower right), 45.7 x 61.5 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The subject of the present work illustrates Morland's predilection for capturing pastoral simplicity, which is idealised without being excessively sentimentalised. Morland's approach was heavily informed by 17th-century Dutch and Flemish landscape painters, such as Jan van Goyen (1596-1656), alongside the scenes of rural life of Pieter Breughel the Younger (1564-1636). His technique and approach also place him firmly alongside his artistic contemporaries, with his atmospheric use of colours and loose brushwork revealing an affinity with the works of John Constable (1773-1837) and Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788).  The present composition, featuring figures at rest in a wooded landscape, is echoed in a number of Morland's works, including one which sold at Christie's, London, on 2 December 2014 (lot 783) for £3,000.
