      George William Mote,  British 1832-1909-  Shepherd with his flock on a track near Guildford, Surrey;  oil on canvas, signed and dated 'GW Mote 1888' (lower right), 76.5 x 63.7 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 15 March 2006, lot 428.  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Mote was a largely self-taught artist, who often worked under the patronage of the book collector and antiquarian Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872). Phillipps allowed Mote and his wife to live in Broadway Tower, a folly in the Worcestershire countryside, which he owned, and which commanded sweeping views of the surrounding Cotswolds, a setting which clearly served as inspiration for Mote's extensive landscapes.  Mote began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1857, thereafter exhibiting regularly there and at the Suffolk Street Galleries.
