Robert Motherwell Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1915 - d. 1991

(born 4 January 1915 Aberdeen, WA; died 16 July 1991 Cape Cod, MA) American painter. Robert Motherwell was a leading Abstract Expressionist who dramatically altered the American art scene during the mid twentieth century. At first desiring to become a philosopher, Motherwell studied the discipline at Stanford University and later at Harvard University. It was in 1938-9 during a trip to Paris where he observed modern art that Motherwell decided to pursue a career in painting and went on to study art history at Columbia University. When he moved to New York he joined with like-minded artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko among others. Motherwell also became close friends with Roberto Matta, whom he joined on a six-month trip to Mexico in 1941. Matta’s associations with Surrealism and the delving into the subconscious no doubt influenced Motherwell and other Abstract Expressionists. Reacting against typical artistic conventions, Motherwell started painted big and bold brushstrokes set against a minimal backdrop. His paintings were meant to evoke authentic emotion by doing away with the superfluous and hence uncovering what is most essential. In 1943 Motherwell began experimenting with collage, which he continued to do until the end of his career. He was a frequent writer on art as well; in 1944 he became the editor of the literary series “Documents of Modern Art”. The same year he had a solo exhibit at Art of this Century Gallery in New York, leading to many more solo exhibits in the following years. Starting in the late 1940s Motherwell began painting his most famous works, Elegy to the Spanish Republic, a series of over 170 paintings that were inspired by the Spanish Civil War. He worked on Elegy to the Spanish Republic until his death, the works representing the universal themes of human suffering and violence reflected in the jarring colors and forms of the compositions. At the same time he began painting Elegy to the Spanish Republic Motherwell spent a great deal of time teaching and lecturing, which he did through the 1950s. A retrospective of his work was held from 1983-5 by Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, NY, and his work is included in the collections of such museums as the Museum of Modern Art, The National Gallery, and The Guggenheim Museum.

ROBERT MOTHERWELL (United States, 1915-United States 1991). "Samurai", 1971 Lithograph on Japan Suzuki paper. Hand signed by the artist. Label by Brooke Alexander on the back. Measurements: 200 x 160 cm; 216 x 124 cm (frame). "Samurai" is a paradigm of Motherwell's work: an aggressive black form from which explosions and slashes radiate. It is one of Motherwell's most potent images, invoking elements of sexuality in the phallic abstract form and violence through the title. Although it is difficult to decipher the traces of figuration in Motherwell's work, he was inspired by and referenced literature, life, politics. A multidisciplinary artist, he trained at Stanford and Harvard Universities in Philosophy and at Columbia University in History and Art, under the direction of Meyer Schapiro. He was one of the leading representatives of American abstract expressionism, to whose group of founders he belongs along with Pollock, Arshile Gorky and Rothko. He also excelled as an art critic. He wrote numerous articles in avant-garde magazines and edited books such as "Documents of Modern Art" (1944-1961) or "Documents of 20th Century Art" (1971). He was a member of the editorial board of the Surrealist-linked publication "VVVV", Motherwell's main objective was to show the viewer the artist's mental and physical engagement with the canvas. He used the hardness of the color black as a basic element; one of his best known techniques consisted of diluting the paint with turpentine to create a shadow effect. His series of paintings known as "Elegies to the Spanish Republic" (Elegy to the Spanish Republic) is considered his most significant project. Among his many exhibitions, we can highlight his participation in the most important surrealist exhibition in the United States organized by André Breton, Marcel Duchamp and gallery owner Sidney Janis at the Whitelaw Reid Mansion (Manhattan-1942). Also the exhibition held at the Gallery "Art of this Century" (New York) in 1943 directed by Peggy Guggenheim; in which he participated along with Jackson Pollock and Baziotes. The following year the Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired one of his works; he was subsequently included in several exhibitions at the same Museum. In 1980, Robert Motherwell had his first exhibition in Spain at the Fundación Juan March (Madrid). In 1986, he received the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts, Spain's highest cultural award. In 1989, the National Medal of Arts of the United States, the Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth (USA) houses the largest collection of works by Motherwell. In the Empire State Plaza (New York) you can also find some of his works. The Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, USA) has an almost exhaustive collection of his prints. In addition to the representation in numerous museums, public and private collections and in the most prestigious galleries around the world.

                    Est: $200 - $400

Robert Burns Motherwell American, (1915-1991) Chicago, 1981 color lithograph on white wove paper Signed with initials and dated upper right. Very small scratch in the margin. Biography from the Archives of askART Photo of Robert Burns Motherwell American painter, Robert Motherwell, was one of the founders and principal exponents of Abstract Expressionism*, who was among the first American artists to cultivate accidental elements in his work. A precocious youth, Motherwell received a scholarship to study art when he was 11 years old. He preferred academic studies, however, and eventually took degrees in aesthetics from Stanford and Harvard universities. Motherwell decided to become a serious artist only in 1941. Although he was especially influenced by the Surrealist* artists; Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, and André Masson; he remained largely self-taught. His early work followed no single style, but already contained motifs from which much of his later art grew. He received his first one-man show in 1944 at Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century Gallery* in New York City. In the mid-1940s, Motherwell painted abstract figurative works that showed the influence of Surrealism*. But in 1949 he painted the first in a series of works collectively entitled "Elegy to the Spanish Republic." He painted almost 150 versions of these "Elegies" in the next three decades. These Abstract Expressionist paintings show his continuous development of a limited repertory of simple, serene, and massive forms that are applied in black paint to the picture plane in such a way that they generate a sense of slow, solemnly suggestive movement. During the 1960s he painted in several different styles, so that such paintings as Africa (1964, 65; Baltimore Museum of Art) look like enlarged details of elegant calligraphy, while Indian Summer, #2 (1962, 64) combines the bravura brush-work typical of Abstract Expressionism with the broad areas of evenly applied color characteristic of the then-emerging Color Field* Painting style. By the end of the decade, paintings in his Open series (1967, 69), he had abandoned Abstract Expressionism in favor of the new style. From 1958 to 1971 Motherwell was married to the American painter Helen Frankenthaler. He taught art at Hunter College (1951, 58, 1971, 72), directed the publication of the series "The Documents of Modern Art" (1944, 52), and wrote numerous essays on art and aesthetics. He was generally regarded as the most articulate spokesman for Abstract Expressionism.
