Darauf deuten die identische Ausführung, das übereinstimmende Format und die sorgfältig arrangierten Bildachsen hin, welche eine subtile kompositorische Harmonie erzeugen. Frederik de Moucheron war ein Schüler Jan Asselijns und wurde in seiner Landschaftsauffassung stark von dessen italianisierendem Stil geprägt. Wahrscheinlich hat Moucheron Italien selbst aber niemals besucht. Zwischen 1655-1658 unternahm er jedoch eine Reise nach Frankreich, wo er in den Alpen, nördlich von Grenoble zahlreiche Landschaftsstudien anfertigte. 1659 ließ sich der Künstler in Amsterdam nieder. Die beiden vorliegenden Zeichnungen dürften nach Moucherons Rückkehr in die Niederlande entstanden sein. Im Duktus unterscheiden sie sich wesentlich von den freier und malerischer behandelten Blättern der französischen Reise. Frederik de Moucheron was a Dutch landscape painter and draughtsman of the Golden Age. He produced mainly landscapes which were decorated with human and animal figures by various colleagues. Frederik de Moucheron was the son of the painter Balthazar de Moucheron and Cornelia van Brouckhoven. His father came from a wealthy family of merchants and wine merchants. He is portrayed as one of the younger sons in the family portrait of Pierre de Moucheron (1583). Frederik trained with Jan Asselijn and became a landscape painter. At the age of 22 he left for Paris, where he spent three years and toured Lyon, Italy and Greece. In 1659 he settled in Amsterdam where he married, continued his artistic production and died. He painted French, Italian and Dutch landscapes. To complete these scenes he was joined by contemporaries who specialised in figure painting, such as Adriaen van de Velde in Amsterdam, Theodor Helmbreker in Paris, and occasionally Johannes Lingelbach, and Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem. De Moucheron's son Isaac, named after his grandfather, who was a pupil of Rembrandt, became a popular engraver and painter, and many of his landscape wall decorations survive in Amsterdam.

In Motiv, Stil und Komposition charakteristisches Werk des Künstlers, das durch seine ikonographisch höchst außergewöhnliche Gefechtsszene mit Mohren herausragt. Frederik de Moucheron lernte um 1650-1655 in Amsterdam bei Jan Asselijn; in einem Intermezzo war er bis 1659 in Frankreich tätig, reiste nach Deutschland, Italien und sehr wahrscheinlich auch nach Griechenland und Marokko - diese biographische Episode dürfte ihn zu der Gefechtsszene im Vordergrund inspiriert haben. Nach seiner Rückkehr schilderte er italienisierende und baumreiche Landschaften mit Jagdgesellschaften, Hirten und Reitern, deren Figurenstaffage oft von bedeutenden Künstlern wie Adriaen van de Velde, Nicolaes Berchem, Johannes Lingelbach und Jan van Huchtenburg stammt.
