Alfons Mucha Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Commercial artist, Illustrator, Photographer, b. 1860 - d. 1939

Alfons Mucha was born in Czechoslovakia in 1860, and studied art in Paris and Munich. Alfons Mucha's drawings were often his own perceptions of the ideal female form. His poster Gismonda, made for actress Sarah Bernhardt's play of the same name, used subtle pastel colors and lighting that accented the crown of her head. Alfons Mucha's drawings also focused on the hair, eyes, and lips of the women portrayed. Mucha continued this revolutionary technique throughout his career, creating theater posters, advertising materials, and magazine covers. A series of Alfons Mucha's paintings of Czech and other Slavic people, entitled Slav Epic, was restored after WWII and placed in the permanent collection at Moravsky Krumlov's castle. Alfons Mucha's art for sale includes illustrations, posters, and canvas paintings. Delve into interesting theatrical and artistic periods by viewing magnificent posters for sale online, and purchase a piece for your home.

  • Alphonse Mucha, Flirt
    May. 20, 2025

    Alphonse Mucha, Flirt

    Est: $5,000 - $6,000

Alphonse Mucha Flirt 1900 sight: 24.25 h x 10.75 w in (62 x 27 cm) "Flirt" was a brand of biscuit sold by Lefevre-Utile, but that becomes almost irrelevant to admirers of this classic depiction of love blossoming. Indeed, it's almost impossible to avoid falling in love with the Victorian elegance on display, with romantic effusiveness held at bay—with difficulty!—for the moment. You can just barely see the baker's L-U logo patterned on the damsel's dress, and doesn't that just take the biscuit? This is the variant reprinted after the 1900 World's Fair, announcing their Grand Prix win. Imp. F. Champenois, Paris Literature: Rennert/Weill, 72, Var. 1; Lendl/Prague, p. 73; Art du Biscuit, p. 9; Gold, 63; PAI-XCIII, 306 This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.

    Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Alphonse Mucha Biscuits Lefevre-Utile 1896 sight: 23.5 h x 17 w in (60 x 43 cm) "One of Mucha's most personable young ladies, her hair cascading irrepressibly in fine style, is offering a dish of wafers. The design of the girl's dress incorporates sickle and wheat emblems... appropriate to the subject" (Rennert/Weill, p. 113). This is the original version of the poster with the 1897 calendarium. Imp. F. Champenois, Paris Literature: Rennert/Weill, 22; Lendl/Prague, p. 71; Weill, p. 42; Gold, 59 (var); Champenois, 90 (var); PAI-XCIII, 316 This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.

  • Alphonse Mucha, The Seasons / Autumn

Alphonse Mucha, The Seasons / Autumn

    Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Alphonse Mucha The Seasons / Autumn 1900 28.875 h x 13.375 w in (73 x 34 cm) This standalone panel from Mucha's 1900 "Seasons" set is consistently one of the most striking and mystical of any of his symbolic figures. The inscription at lower right, translated, reads: "Autumn, symbolizing maturity and bearing the thyrse of the harvest, presents the fruits that the Summer sun has gilded." The figure of Autumn is adorned in a way that looks both Byzantine and Celtic. Metallic ink defines the borders and allows them to shine in the light. Signed to lower right margin 'Mucha'. Imp. F. Champenois, Paris (not shown) Literature: Rennert/Weill, 74 (var); Mucha, P50 (var); PAI-LXI, 369 This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.

  • Alphonse Mucha "Incantation" L'Estampe Moderne, 1897
    May. 01, 2025

Alphonse Mucha "Incantation" L'Estampe Moderne, 1897

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Alphonse Mucha (Czech-born expatriate in Paris, 1860-1939). "Incantation" (Salammbo) Lithograph in colors, Plate from L'Estampe Moderne, 1897. Printed by Champenois, Paris. L'Estampe Moderne blindstamp depicting a young woman in profile lower right. Signed in plate at lower left. One of only two plates that Alphonse Mucha designed for L'Estampe Moderne, a publication that appeared as a series of 24 monthly fascicles from 1897 to 1899, and featured many of the most sought after Art Nouveau artists of the day, including Mucha who also created the cover design for L'Estampe. "Incantation (Salammbo)" is among Mucha's finest works, demonstrating his signature Art Nouveau style with expressive sensuality, sinuous lines, and rich hues. Also accompanied by L'Estampe Moderne's dust jacket for "Incantation" that states this plate was executed as a special supplement for one-year subscribers of L'Estampe as well as an antique frame. Size: 16" L x 12" W (40.6 cm x 30.5 cm) More about the iconograph of this piece: "In 1862 Gustave Flaubert wrote his romantic novel 'Salammbo' about the fictional daughter of Hamilcar Barca, the barbaric ruler of Carthage as a subject, in which she was searching for a magic veil ('le Zaimph' seen here trailing from her shoulder) that was stolen from the city shortly after the First Punic War. Salammbo falls in love with the barbarian Matho, the man who stole the veil. When Matho is caught and tortured to death, she chooses to die rather than marry the man she was meant for. The Zaimph has brought death upon those who touched it. / Gustave Flaubert's 'Salammbo' is an often stirring mixture and intertwining of the history of the Punic Wars and of the myths held by the people of ancient Carthage. It includes some of the most erotic passages in 19th century literature, between the lovely and exotically beautiful Salammbo and Matho, the leader of the barbarians. / In the scene created by Mucha, a priestess advises Salammbo during a session of incantation, that without reobtaining the Zaimph, Carthage is doomed." (source: Inter-Antiquariaat Mefferdt & De Jonge) About the Artist: Born in Ivancice, Moravia, Alphonse Mucha began his studies at the Academie Julian, Paris in 1887 sponsored by a patron in Moravia. Funding from that patron ran out after several years of painting murals, and Mucha suffered from poverty and illness due to malnutrition. Life took a positive turn following his recovery. Mucha and his contemporary Paul Gauguin traveled and shared a studio. Their friendship and mutual support refueled Mucha, and his unique style, replete with meticulous design motifs, Byzantine-inspired mosaic patterns, and elegant woman subjects, evolved. Mucha's work resonated with the actress Sarah Bernhardt who commissioned him to create posters for her shows as well as costume and stage designs. Mucha's star rose through this exposure and he became a sought after graphic artist associated with the Art Nouveau movement. This stunning and rare lithograph is from Alphonse Mucha's Documents décoratifs. The work was published in Paris by Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts in 1902 and edited by Emile Levy. The work was an excellent representation of his work in the art nouveau movement. It included images of flowers, fauna, women, jewelry, kerosene lamps, cutlery, posters, furniture, and illustrations for books. Mucha "illustrates the process of stylisation and simplification that transforms a drawing from nature to an object for practical use [...] The compatibility of design and material is emphasized in applications of an identical motif on tableware, lace or jewelry. Examples for graphic artists include studies of nude or draped figures and of heads. Mucha's drawings and applied designs show virtuosity that surpasses technical ability. The publication was considered an invaluable textbook for artisans and designers and was used by art students in France and abroad, including Russia." (V. Arwas et al.
