After the group disbanded in 1913, however, he suffered the same fate as many of his fellow artists: Mueller was drafted into military service during World War I. Initially deployed in Flanders, he was transferred to France shortly thereafter, where he contracted severe pneumonia at Easter 1917 and was eventually admitted to the military hospital at the Camillian monastery in Neuss for a convalescence lasting almost exactly two months. At the hospital, Mueller used the time to plan further exhibitions, meet fellow artists from Düsseldorf, and complete commissioned works for the citizens of Neuss. The monastery played a key role in this, as many members of Neuss society frequented the monastery—including for charitable purposes. This included Magdalena Helena Kallen, who worked at the infirmary as a volunteer Red Cross nurse and thus came into contact with Mueller. The double portrait of the Kallen couple, rediscovered in 2014, which Mueller created over several extended sessions, is one of only a few surviving works from his time at the Neuss infirmary. The commissioned works in Neuss are of immense importance to Mueller. Even before his stay at the military hospital, Mueller wrote to his wife Maschka that he intended to earn money for their joint livelihood through commissioned portraits. In Neuss, the ideal opportunity presented itself, and so the double portrait serves as a rare testament to this decisive period in Otto Mueller’s life. Das hier vorliegende Blatt "Zigeunerin im Profil" zählt zu den eindrucksvollsten und zugleich charakteristischsten Darstellungen dieser Folge. In sanft gerundeten Formen und gedämpfter, erdiger Farbgebung zeigt Mueller die Figur einer jungen Frau im Profil - ruhig, gesammelt und in sich gekehrt. Die harmonische Linienführung und die subtile Tonabstufung verleihen dem Werk jene stille Intensität, die Muellers Arbeiten von der expressiven Schärfe seiner "Brücke"-Kollegen unterscheidet.Der aus Schlesien stammende Expressionist wurde 1910 als vorletztes Mitglied in die Dresdner Künstlergemeinschaft aufgenommen, entwickelte jedoch bald eine eigenständige Bildsprache, die von Ruhe und formaler Harmonie geprägt ist. Nach wiederholten Aufenthalten in Ungarn, Rumänien und Bulgarien wandte sich Mueller ab Mitte der 1920er Jahre in einer Reihe von Lithografien den Lebenswelten von Roma und Sinti zu. Die zwischen 1926 und 1927 an der Breslauer Akademie entstandenen Blätter druckte Mueller in einer kleinen Auflage von 60 Mappen eigenhändig. The present sheet, 'Gypsy Woman in Profile', is one of the most impressive and characteristic representations in this series. In gently rounded forms and muted, earthy colours, Mueller shows the figure of a young woman in profile - calm, collected and introverted. The harmonious lines and subtle tonal gradations lend the work a quiet intensity that distinguishes Mueller's work from the expressive sharpness of his 'Brücke' colleagues. The Expressionist, who came from Silesia, was accepted into the Dresden artists' community in 1910 as its penultimate member, but soon developed his own visual language characterised by calm and formal harmony. After repeated stays in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, Mueller turned his attention to the lives of Roma and Sinti in a series of lithographs from the mid-1920s onwards. Mueller printed the sheets, which were created between 1926 and 1927 at the Breslau Academy, in a small edition of 60 portfolios by hand.
