Carl Muller was a quarter-blood Piegan Blackfoot and a freelance scout in Dakota with Buffalo Bill Cody. Dan Muller was raised on the Cross-Up Ranch. He was influenced toward art by meeting Charles M. Russell and was discouraged by his teachers from taking formal art lessons so as to protect his personal style. He traveled in Buffalo Bill shows in 1911-1912 while continuing to draw and paint. In 1917 Muller rode from Canada to Mexico before settling in Elko Nevada. "Many of Muller's firsthand experiences in the Old West are depicted in his oils, watercolors and pastels. His work is done in a documentary style, which is punctuated with great authenticity.

Dan Cody Muller (1888-1970) Saddlin' Up Watercolor

Featured in this lot is this original watercolor titled "Saddlin' Up" by Montana artist Dan Cody Miller born in 1888 and died in 1970. Dan (Cody) Muller was born in Choteau, MT in 1889. His father was a free lance scout with Buffalo Bill Cody and when his father was killed by a horse when Dan was age 9, Buffalo Bill adopted him as his own son. He spent the next 18 years working on Cody's ranches and participating in his Wild West shows. He met C.M. Russell, who influenced him to pursue a career in art. He sold early paintings to tourists in Yellowstone Park, but quickly moved on to much larger adventures, such as painting murals for an exhibit in the 1933 World's Fair. he also authored 4 books, which include his illustrations, an illustrated for a number of other famous authors and feature writers. The watercolor shows a ranch hand with saddle blanket already laid, throwing his saddle onto his trusty mount for a day of hard work in a arena fenced by logs. The artist signature is shown in the bottom left hand corner. The condition of this original watercolor is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage and shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this watercolor painting is 31 3/4" x 25 3/4" and the visible artwork measures 23 1/2" x 17 1/2". The collective weight of this painting is 9lb 12oz.

He later opened a sign shop in Chicago and then in 1920 sold landscapes to tourists in Yellowstone Park. In 1930 in Chicago his Western paintings started to sell and he received commissions for murals for the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. Also in 1933 he had a short story with illustrations called Break 'Em Easy published in the premier edition of Esquire Magazine. He returned to Nevada in 1935 and again painted for the tourist trade. He painted murals for the "Town House" restaurant in Reno Nevada. Mr. Muller was married in Elko in 1936. Dan Muller was featured as a cover artist and short story contributor in several issues of Zane Grey's Western Magazine in the 1940-50's. In the 1960's he contributed cover art work to Old West and Frontier Times magazines. The October issue of Montana Magazine of Western History did an 18 page feature story on Muller which included examples of several of his paintings. The artist authored four books which included illustrations: Horses in 1936, Chico and the +Up Ranch in 1938, My Life With Buffalo Bill in 1948 and Trailings of Yesteryear which was published posthumously. He also illustrated a 1948 edition of Black Beauty by Anna Sewell and another book Gene Autry and the Thief River Outlaws by Bob Hamilton. Dan Muller spent the last 40 years or so of his life living and working in Wisconsin where he had a studio. He was a major influence on the artist Ross Stefan. Dan Muller died near Port Washington Wisconsin in December 1976.

Cowboy with Saddled Horses

This painting of a cowboy with four saddled horses is by D. C. Muller. 17.5" x 23.5", framed 22.5" x 28.5". Dan Muller aka Daniel Cody Muller (1889ñ1976), artist, illustrator and writer of the American West; Muller was born in Choteau, Montana. Muller's early years are known only from the artist's own recollections of them. In one of his five published books, "My Life with Buffalo Bill" the artist alleges that his father, who was allegedly one quarter Piegan Blackfoot, was killed by a horse when Muller was nine years old, and he (the artist) was adopted by Buffalo Bill Cody. Muller then reportedly was raised and spent 18 years working with Cody in his Wild West Shows and on Cody's ranches. Muller wrote that he met C.M. Russell about 1900 in Choteau MT (about 50 miles from Russell's home town of Great Falls) and was influenced in his art by Russell. In a 1964 Milwaukee newspaper article Muller was described by a Taos NM art gallery owner as "...the Russell or Remington of our day". He settled for a while in Elko, Nevada in the mid-1930s where he painted murals and signs as well as original artwork. He painted murals for the famous Town House restaurant/casino in Reno NV. In 1936 the artist had a painting chosen to represent the state of NV in the First National Exhibition of American Art at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Original Dan Muller Oil on Canvas Painting

This is an original Dan Muller (1889-1976) oil on canvas painting. The painting is titled "The Line Rider" and shows a cowboy on horseback carrying a newborn calf. The piece is accompanied by a letter from Muller explaining the story of the painting. Muller mentions in the letter that he was adopted by Buffalo Bill when he was nine years old. As stated in the letter, Muller was working at the TE Ranch in Ishawooa, Wyoming years later which was owned by Buffalo Bill. He was working out of a line camp on the ranch when he came upon a nearly frozen calf next to a dead cow. He picked up the calf and took it back to his camp where he hand fed it. When he told the story to "Uncle Bill" (Buffalo Bill), he encouraged Muller to paint the scene. From his letter: "Picture if you can, this cowboy artist painting "The Line Rider" with the one and only Buffalo Bill sitting on a chair breathing down my neck and adding criticisms...". The letter was hand written by Dan Muller to the then owner of the painting. Also included with the letter and painting is a 1936 publication of "Horses" by Dan Muller and a photograph inscribed to Ernie Reiff. This is a fantastic collection of Western art history. The painting is in good condition. The frame measures 30.5" x 38.25".
