Muncaster was born Grahame Hall, the son of the painter Oliver Hall. He was encouraged as an artist by his father, but was largely self-taught and to avoid accusations of nepotism he took his mother's maiden name alongside that of the 17th Century painter Claude Lorrain, whom he greatly admired. He profoundly loved the sea and travelled as a deck-hand, making several voyages, the sketches from which he turned into illustrated books, including Rolling Around the Horn (1933).During World War II he was a Lieutenant Commander of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and advised the Admiralty on camouflage. He was President of the Society of Marine Artists. This present work is painted on a piece of sail cloth that served as the artist's bed cover when he was onboard the Olivebank.

The first of these was the new atomic power station to be built at Bradwell- coincidentally designed by Lady McAlpine's father. With the success of these initials paintings further commissions followed- dry dock construction; hospital buildings and iron works. These were demanding works- necessities of rough drafts for approval, and the sheer hard work of realistically depicting the scaffold poles, stagings and cranes. In all this hard work his son records that he found pleasure in the friendships he build with 'Billy' McAlpine and his brother Alastair. (The Wind in the Oak, Martin Muncaster, Robin Garton, 1978).Claude Muncaster was another family friend whose son Martin was a regular visitor to Fawley Hill. I think we had, at one time, the largest single collection of works by Claude Muncaster in the world. To my great regret I sold a lot of small sketches a few years ago.He was prolific and most of the pictures we bought were of boats and angry seas made while he was sailing round the world on cargo-carrying sailing ships. At least two of those now for sale were painted on the old bit of sail that covered his bunk because he had run out of canvas and was desperate to capture the moment. I didn't meet him. I wish I had. He clearly had that passion and intensity and zest for life that was so evident in David Shepherd and Terry Cuneo. It shows in his work. His son was adorable, in awe of his father's talent; and I miss him too. Lady McAlpine.

(33 x 48.5cm.) The four-masted barque Olivebank, built by Mackie Thompson, Govan for the Bank Line in 1892, registered 2824 tons - thought to be one of the largest of her type ever built. After fifteen years with Bank Line, she changed hands several more time and by 1938 was under Finnish colours. She struck a mine in the North Sea just five days after War was declared on 3rd September 1938 with the loss of fourteen men including Captain Granith - seven others were saved from the rigging two days later. Time stained.

§ Claude Muncaster RWS, RBA, SMA, ROI (British 1903-1974) On the edge of the Blue Mountains, Jamaica signed 'CLAUDE MUNCASTER' (lower right); artist's label to the reverse oil on canvas 100 x 116cm Exhibited: London, The Federation of British Artists, Miami Exhibition (3) Footnote: An enthusiastic sailor, Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and one of the principal maritime painters of the 20th century, Claude Muncaster was born Grahame Hall, in West Chiltington, Sussex, in 1903. The son of noted Landscape painter, Oliver Hall RA, Muncaster was tutored in painting from a young age, and, whilst the pair shared an aspiration “to carry on the best traditions of English painting”, in 1922 Muncaster changed his name to avoid any suggestion that his nascent career was indebted in any way to his father’s reputation. First exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1921, Muncaster held his first solo exhibition in 1926 at the Fine Art Society, became a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1936 and was appointed President of the Society of Marine Artists in 1939. Drawn impulsively towards the sea and aiming to ‘paint ships and the sea with greater authority’, Muncaster spent the 1920s and 1930s sailing around the world as a deckhand. In his sketchbooks and notepads, Muncaster documented all aspects of nautical life, from the ferocious storms and rugged shipmates to the lucent sunsets and balmy, tropical evenings. During the Second World War, he served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, working as a navigator between 1940 and 1944, before being appointed as a naval camoufleur.

Used as the cover illustration for Martin Muncaster’s 1978 biography of his father, in 1979, possibly a result of the publicity surrounding the book, the painting re-emerged. Thought to have been painted in 1931 on a voyage aboard the Olive Bank from Melbourne to England, chronicled by Muncaster in his 1933 publication Rolling Round the Horn, the present lot, with its deftly observed matrix of rigging and dynamic canted angle, is demonstrative of both Muncaster’s lived experience and his comprehensive maritime knowledge.
