MARTIN MUNKÁCSI (Hungary, 1896- 1963). “Fashion Study Earrings”, c.1940. Gelatin silver print.

        Est: €2,800 - €3,000

MARTIN MUNKÁCSI (Hungary, 1896- 1963). "Fashion Study Earrings, c.1940. Gelatin silver print. Size: 28 x 22 cm; 51 x 40 cm (passe-partout). Munkácsi was a newspaper editor and photographer in Hungary, specialising in sports. At that time, action sports photography could only be done outdoors in bright light. Munkácsi's innovation was to make meticulously composed action sports photographs, which required both artistic and technical skill. Munkácsi's big break came when he took photographs that influenced the outcome of a murder trial and brought Munkácsi considerable fame. This fame helped him to get work in Berlin in 1928, for the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung. He also worked for the fashion magazine Die Dame. Beyond sports and fashion, he photographed Berliners, in all their activities. He travelled to Turkey, Sicily, Egypt, London, New York and Liberia to produce photo reports for Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung. The speed of the modern age and the excitement of new photographic viewpoints captivated him. On 21 March 1933, he photographed the fateful Potsdam Day, when the aging President Paul von Hindenburg handed Germany over to Adolf Hitler. On assignment for the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, he photographed Hitler's inner circle, although he was a Jewish foreigner. Munkácsi went to New York, where he was signed, for a substantial sum of $100,000, by the fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar. He was discovered by Carmel Snow, who in 1933 persuaded him to photograph the "Palm Beach" swimming costume issue of Harper's Bazaar's December issue. For this issue, he had model Lucille Brokaw run towards the camera while he photographed her, the first instance of a fashion model being photographed on the move. In a departure from standard practice, he often left the studio to photograph on location, on the beach, on farms and fields, at an airport. He produced one of the first popular magazine articles illustrated with nude photographs. In 1934, the Nazis nationalised Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, fired its Jewish editor-in-chief, Kurt Korff, and replaced his innovative photography with images of German troops. Munkácsi's portraits include those of Katharine Hepburn, Leslie Howard, Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, Jane Russell, Louis Armstrong and the definitive dance photograph of Fred Astaire.

He applied a snapshot aesthetic to sporting events and athletes with meticulous and skilled precision, and was published in German photo weeklies, where he solidified his reputation as an innovative and skilled photographer. In 1933 he moved to New York to work at Harper's Bazaar, where his informal style and energetic approach revolutionized fashion photography, making him one of the most famous photographers of the period.
