Lucio Muñoz's style is characterized by an abstract, material and very expressive painting, linked to Spanish informalism, where the artist experiments with materials such as wood, which he pierces, burns or tears to turn the support into an essential part of the work. This piece is very identifiable of his artistic language because, although it is a graphic work, it maintains the prominence of textures, hallmarks between dark and light areas and an abstract composition of great poetic force. Geometric shapes and diagonal lines generate tension and depth, evoking abstract landscapes and transmitting Muñoz's own lyrical and experimental character. One of the main representatives of Spanish informalism and a pioneer of abstraction in Spain, Lucio Muñoz began his career influenced by landscape and trained at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts. After a stay in Paris, where he became acquainted with the work of Fautrier, Dubuffet, Wols and Tàpies, he evolved towards a fully informalist and abstract expressionist language. His material painting and the experimental use of materials such as wood, which he perforated and ripped, gave his work a great poetic and personal force. Since the late fifties he established himself as a key figure of the Spanish avant-garde and began to exhibit internationally in cities such as Chicago, New York, Paris and London. Over time, his language evolved towards a more lyrical aesthetic and closer to the landscape, always maintaining the importance of the support and the material. He received important awards, including the National Prize for Plastic Arts in 1983 and a retrospective at the Reina Sofia Museum in 1989.

Lucio Muñoz, one of the main representatives of the Spanish informalism and pioneer of the abstraction in the country, began his career influenced by the landscape and by artists like Benjamín Palencia. He studied at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a disciple of Eduardo Chicharro, and after his studies he became acquainted with the Madrid realists, among them Antonio López. He made his debut in 1955 with a solo exhibition at the Dintel Gallery in Santander, where his approach to abstraction, influenced by Klee, Tamayo, Nicholson and Torres García, was already evident. That same year he participated in a group exhibition with outstanding artists of his generation. In 1956 he obtained a scholarship to study in Paris, where contact with the works of Fautrier, Dubuffet, Wols and Tàpies consolidated his definitive step towards informalism and abstract expressionism. On his return to Spain, between 1957 and 1958, he held exhibitions that consolidated his personal style and placed him in the avant-garde. His work is characterized by a material work, with direct interventions on the support -Punctures, incisions, tears- that provide a strong poetic dimension. After an initial very experimental stage, his painting evolved towards less aggressive compositions and closer to monochrome, expanding his references to Goya, Velázquez, Gregorian chant, Castilian landscapes, Flemish and Dürer. From the sixties onwards he exhibited internationally in cities such as Chicago, New York, Buenos Aires, Frankfurt, Lisbon, Munich, London, Havana, Paris, Berlin and Brussels. From the end of that decade he began a more fantastic and nocturnal period, which lasted until 1981. The exhibition of that year at the Juana Mordó Gallery marks the beginning of a flatter and lighter language, culminating in the series of large format color engravings made between 1983 and 1984.

In the collection of the Abanca Foundation there is a similar work (INV. 1136) of which it is noted "This work belongs to a period in which he devoted himself intensely to graphic work, within a stage in which he used dark ranges and liked to reflect beings between minerals, vegetables and aquatic. At the end of the seventies his chromatic range will begin to lighten". Muñoz was trained at the San Fernando Academy and, after an early contact with the Madrid realists, he evolved towards informalism after studying in Paris. His style, marked by a matteric and expressionist painting, is characterized by direct interventions on the support and a lyrical approach. Throughout his career he exhibited internationally and his work went from an experimental and colorist stage to a more sober and monochromatic one. Since the late sixties he adopted a more fantastic tone and, after 1981, his artistic language became flatter and lighter.

Seine künstlerische Entwicklung nahm eine entscheidende Wendung, als Muñoz 1956 ein Stipendium zum Kunststudium in Paris erhält. In Paris setzt sich Muñoz mit Art Brut auseinander und lernt das Werk von Jean Dubuffet, Jean Fautrier, Wols und Antoni Tàpies. kennen. In dieser Zeit entdeckt er Holz als Ausdrucksmedium, ein Material, dem traditionell keine malerische Qualität zugesprochen wird. Auf unterschiedlichste Art bearbeitet - geritzt, durchbohrt, verbrannt, geschnitzt oder ausgehöhlt und in Assemblagen verbunden - ist Holz ab Ende der 1950er Jahre der Bedeutungsträger seiner Bilder, die in ihrer archaischen Expressivität von einem so poetischen wie puristischen Naturverständnis künden. 1983 wurde Lucio Muñoz der spanische Nationalpreis für Bildende Künste verliehen. 1989 widmet ihm das Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid eine Retrospektive. 2004 zeigt das Kunsthistorische Museum Wien einen Werküberblick. This work by Lucio Muñoz, made between 1994 and 1996, is a paradigmatic example of his most refined visual language, in which painting, sculpture and matter converge in an inseparable dialogue. It is a mixed technique on wood, within what could be called assemblage or assemblage, a practice that Muñoz adopted early on and turned into a sign of identity. Here, the pictorial surface dissolves as such to give way to a structure that, although not three-dimensional, puts the wood in dialogue with the geometric figures created by the assemblages. The lower triangle stands out because it is painted white, introducing a visual and symbolic tension that evokes the tectonic. The pictorial intervention, far from covering or hiding the surface, acts as an act of revelation, accentuating veins, textures and accidents of the natural support. The work is thus inscribed in a poetics of the limit: between the natural and the intervened, between the abstract and the archetypal, between the pictorial and the objectual. One of the most outstanding exponents of Spanish informalism, pioneer of abstraction in the country, Lucio Muñoz began his career focused on landscape, one of the most cultivated genres in Spain at the time, largely thanks to the influence of Benjamín Palencia. He began his training at the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where he was a disciple of Eduardo Chicharro. After finishing his studies he came into contact with the Madrid realists Antonio López and the López Hernández brothers. He made his individual debut in 1955, with an exhibition at the Dintel Gallery in Santander, consisting of works already close to abstraction, which reveal the influences of Klee, Rufino Tamayo, Ben Nicholson and Torres García. That same year he participates in a collective exhibition of the Dirección General de Bellas Artes, together with Antonio López, Julio L. Hernández and Francisco López. The following year he obtained a scholarship from the French State to complete his training in Paris. There he studied the works of Fautrier, Dubuffet, Wols and Tàpies, and his style drifted definitively towards informalism, leaving behind the initial influences of cubism and expressionism. From this moment on, Muñoz became fully committed to abstract expressionism. He returns to Spain and holds two exhibitions that tell us about the establishment of his personal style and place him squarely in the Spanish avant-garde. The first took place at the Fernando Fe gallery in Madrid in 1957, and the second was held the following year at the Ateneo in the same city. His material painting, his original, sensitive and personal use of materials, gives his compositions a poetic and lyrical dimension. The importance that Muñoz attaches to the support itself stands out in his production; the artist perforates, tears, makes incisions, etc., approaching informalism in a totally personal way. His works, mostly colorful, represent the purest informalism. After a first stage of experimentation with the most diverse materials (burnt paper, wood, etc.), in his final phase his painting becomes less aggressive, due to the use of materials with less relief and a palette tending towards monochrome. In these years his influences broaden and include the black paintings of Goya, the work of Velázquez, Gregorian chant with its solemn depth, the sober and infinite landscapes of Castile, the liberated energy of flamenco and the engravings of Albrecht Dürer. In 1961 he had his first solo exhibition abroad, which took place at the Joachim Gallery in Chicago, and two years later he exhibited for the first time in New York, at the Staemplfi Gallery. Since then he has had solo exhibitions all over Spain, as well as in cities such as Buenos Aires, Frankfurt, Lisbon, Munich, London, Havana, Paris, Berlin and Brussels.
