    About the engraving: This is one of the most famous charts of mythical sea monsters. The monsters were derivative of Olaus Magnus's Carta Marina from 1539. It reflects the Renaissance attitude towards the unknown lands beyond civilization. The image is one of the most sought after curiosities of the 16th century. One vignette shows a galleon trying to outrun one monster by throwing their cargo overboard, while one sailor takes sight with a musket. It features beasts of land and sea. While many are the stuff of fantasy, many are based upon depictions from Scandinavian sailors and whalemen encounters. The monsters included are whales, giant lobsters, sea serpents (perhaps oarfish), and possibly an Orca and walrus.     About the map: This map "sealed the fate of 'America' as the name of the New World." (Burden 12) It was also the first to show American in the 'correct' continental form. This map was also the first to name the Pacific Ocean titled 'Mare Pacificum.' The map was first published in 1540 as part of Munster's edition of Ptolemy's Geography then published for the first time as part of Munster's Cosmographia Universalis in 1544 with this produced from the same woodcut. Burden notes: "The Portuguese flag is shown flying over the South Atlantic and the Spanish one over her possessions in the Caribbean. The Strait of Magellan is named again, and Mare pacificum appears for the first time on a printed map. Magellan's ship Victoria, the only survivor of five vessels, appears for the first time on a printed map. Marco Polo's influence can be seen with Zipangri (Japan) appearing three years before the earliest known contact with Europeans, and also his Archipelagus 7448 insularu. The Yucatan is still shown as an island and the lake at Temistitan is depicted emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. North America is not shown as accurately as the southern half of the continent, it had to a large extent been neglected so far by explorers. When Giovanni de Verrazzano, in the service of Francis I of France, passed by the Outer Banks of the Carolinas in 1524 he mistook Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds for the 'Oriental Sea' that led to Cathay and the rich Spice Islands. Here Munster perpetuates this error and through the success of this book provided a huge impetus to the exploration of the region. The only placenames appearing here are C. Britonum, marking England's early explorations, Corterati, probably Newfoundland after the Corte Reals, and Terra florida. Francisca is named in honor of Francis I." La mappa della Sicilia e del 1550, tratta dalla celebre Cosmographia Universalis di Sebastian Münster. La carta è stata stampata a Basilea (Svizzera) dal tipografo Heinrich Petri ed è inclusa nel Libro VI della Cosmographia, considerata una delle enciclopedie geografiche più lette e influenti del XVI secolo ed è una preziosa xilografia rinascimentale. La conformazione dell'isola risulta stilizzata e a tratti "grossolana", con una forma leggermente distorta, profonde insenature costiere, l'Etna in eruzione (rappresentato con delle fiamme) e una serie di catene montuose nell'entroterra. I mari circostanti sono arricchiti da mostri marini e imbarcazioni dell'epoca. Il retro della mappa riporta solitamente del testo esplicativo in latino o tedesco. Bibliografia L. Dufour, A. La mappa della Sicilia nella edizione del 1580, tratta dalla celebre Cosmographia Universalis di Sebastian Münster e stampata a Basilea (Attribuibile agli eredi di Heinrich Petri o Sebastian Petri, che continuarono a pubblicare l'opera decenni dopo la morte dell'autore), è una preziosa xilografia tardo rinascimentale. L'opera unisce la rappresentazione geografica dell'isola a xilografie di vedute urbane, mostri marini e costumi dell'epoca. La Sicilia è raffigurata con un orientamento a nord-ovest, circondata dal Mar Mediterraneo e ricca di dettagli come le catene montuose e i fiumi principali. Al retro del foglio stemma della casa d’Aragona. La carta è inserita all'interno di fogli ricchi di xilografie raffiguranti le città più importanti dell'isola (come Palermo e Messina), stemmi nobiliari e descrizioni storico-geografiche dettaglia.
