We thank the Gabriele Münter- und Johannes Eichner-Stiftung for confirming the authenticity of the work. It is registered in the estate under the number L 352. Due to the First World War, Gabriele Münter went into exile in 1916 together with her partner Wassily Kandinsky on the Danish island of Bornholm, as he, being a Russian citizen, could no longer remain in Germany. During this period, known as the "Scandinavian exile", Münter produced numerous paintings, primarily landscapes and interiors. At the same time, she developed a more intimate and simplified painterly approach, in contrast to the more experimental and expressive style of the prewar years associated with the group "Der Blaue Reiter". In 1917, Kandinsky returned to Russia and married another woman, marking the definitive end of his relationship with Münter. Left on her own, Münter moved in the summer of 1919 to Gudhjem, a quiet and picturesque village on the northern coast of Bornholm, where she earned her living by giving painting lessons and worked intensively to come to terms with her separation from Kandinsky. There, she developed a more independent and introspective style, creating works characterized by a quiet and reflective atmosphere that nevertheless convey a sense of emotional stability—despite her personal crisis. This is evident in simple, calm, and well-ordered compositions, as well as in a light and harmonious palette. The painting "Gudhjem", created precisely during this phase, depicts a peaceful coastal landscape overlooking the sea. Curving paths lead through a green, hilly terrain. Tall trees with clearly defined contours frame the composition and lend it a sense of structure. The village houses are rendered in simple, clear forms. Their roofs glow in warm shades of red, while the walls are painted in light, friendly tones. The blue of the sea is even and gentle, and the sky appears soft and suffused with light. A calm, contemplative atmosphere prevails, making the scene appear quiet and almost timeless. Münter’s stay in Gudhjem proved highly fruitful for her artistic development. Rather than responding to this difficult personal period with chaos or drama, she turned to order and stability, developing her own independent painterly identity as well as a strong sense of autonomy—something far from self-evident for women of her time. ------------------------------------------------- GABRIELE MÜNTER (Berlin 1877–1962 Murnau) Gudhjem. 1919. Allein gelassen, zieht Münter im Sommer 1919 nach Gudhjem, einem ruhigen und malerischen Ort an der Nordküste Bornholms, wo sie ihren Lebensunterhalt durch Malunterricht verdient und intensiv arbeitet, um die Trennung von Kandinsky zu verarbeiten. Hier entwickelt sie einen eigenständigeren, introspektiven Stil und schafft Werke, die durch eine stille und reflektierte Atmosphäre geprägt sind, aber auch ein Gefühl von emotionaler Stabilität vermitteln – trotz der persönlichen Krise. Dies zeigt sich in einfachen, ruhigen und geordneten Kompositionen sowie in der hellen, harmonischen Farbgebung. Das Gemälde "Gudhjem", das genau während dieser Phase entsteht, zeigt eine friedliche Küstenlandschaft mit Blick auf das Meer. Geschwungene Wege führen durch eine grüne Hügellandschaft. Hohe Bäume mit deutlich abgegrenzten Konturen rahmen die Komposition und verleihen ihr Halt. Die Häuser des Dorfes sind in einfachen, klaren Formen dargestellt. Ihre Dächer leuchten in warmen Rottönen, während die Wände in hellen, freundlichen Farben gehalten sind. Das Blau des Meeres ist gleichmässig und sanft, der Himmel erscheint weich und lichtdurchzogen. Es herrscht eine ruhige, kontemplative Atmosphäre, die die Szene still und beinahe zeitlos wirken lässt. Der Aufenthalt in Gudhjem war äusserst fruchtbar für die künstlerische Entwicklung Münters. Auf die schwierige persönliche Phase reagiert die Künstlerin nicht mit Chaos oder Dramatik, sondern mit Ordnung und Stabilität, indem sie eine eigene malerische Identität sowie ein starkes Gefühl von Unabhängigkeit entwickelt, die für Frauen ihrer Zeit nicht selbstverständlich waren.

At the beginning of the 1930s, Gabriele Münter permanently moved back to Murnau and built on her expressionist painting from the period of “Der Blauer Reiter”. Along with landscapes, her work focused on floral still lifes, which she presents against a white or, occasionally, dark background. “There remain the flowers, which come into the house from the garden”, writes her second partner, Johannes Eichner. “Inexhaustible abundance of colours” (Gabriele Münter, exh. cat. Lenbachhaus, Munich 1992, no pag.). In this painting, whose use of colour is so extremely appealing, Münter has concentrated entirely on depicting the simple, olive-green vase and the bouquet consisting of begonias, dahlias and bellflowers. The vitality of the composition emerges from the arrangement of flowers, which are only casually placed together and “pour” out over the side of the vase and into the foreground. Here, as in a number of floral still lifes from this period, Münter has summarily delineated the outlines of the vase and the flowers with dark contour lines; the paint is applied in broad, lively brushstrokes. The luminous red, purple, blue and green tones of the flower petals stand out more strongly due to her renunciation of any additional motifs. The dark-blue and black colouring of the background, which is not further defined in any way, is an exceptional feature of this still life. In contrast to a light ground, it makes the colourful flowers stand out radiantly and appear extremely three-dimensional. The “Blumenstillleben auf schwarzem Grund” displays a mastery of composition that becomes characteristic from the middle of the 1930s. This is the period when Münter brought her floral still lifes to their final stage of maturity.

The painting “Vor der Kirche” belongs to the outstanding works from the early 1930s, the period when Gabriele Münter moved back to Murnau with her new partner Johannes Eichner and revisited the expressionist tradition of “Der Blaue Reiter”. The Münter expert Annegret Hoberg writes: “the paintings she was now producing in great numbers reflect her recovery of creative enjoyment and compositional power and build on the expressionist style from the period before the war, except that the forms are now softer, more cohesive and less expressive. Once again it is bold, often darkly luminous colours that […] are framed within dark contours” (Annegret Hoberg, Gabriele Münter, Cologne 2017, p. 84). Münter has chosen the simple architecture of a white church with a small adjoining structure as the primary motif of her landscape painting. She has framed this motif using the shrubs next to it as well as two large trees: the one on the left is striking and is adorned with yellow foliage. Münter has inserted a woman equipped with a farmer’s rake and her daughter into the foreground of the scene as a living motif, placing them on a broad path partially covered with leaves. As in the time of “Der Blaue Reiter”, Münter has also relied on large, homogeneous fields of green, blue, brown and yellow in “Vor der Kirche”. The black contours that Münter has employed to surround the fields of colour are another stylistic device that is realised here and comes from the period of “Der Blaue Reiter”. Like other comparable paintings from this period, this work reflects the power of intense and thoroughly vivid colours based on a foundation of energetic drawing.

Originaltitel In einer braunen Keramik-Schenkkanne mit volkstümlichem Dekor arrangierter Strauß roter, gelber und weißer Blumen, der von einer zentralen Tigerlilie überragt wird. Das 1955 entstandene Spätwerk gehört in die große Gruppe von Blumenstilleben, die die Künstlerin seit ihrer Rückkehr in ihr Haus in Murnau 1931 vermehrt malte. Die bedeutende Expressionistin, deren Oeuvre eng mit dem "Blauen Reiter" und Wassily Kandinsky verbunden ist, legte ihre Blumenstillleben gerne als sog. "farbige Zeichnungen" an. Charakteristisch dabei ist ihre Absage an eine üppige Pracht zugunsten der Vereinzelung und der Verzicht auf Plastizität und Räumlichkeit mit größtenteils sichtbar belassenem Bildgrund. Die stilisierten Blumen werden hierbei mit wenigen kräftigen leuchtenden Strichen angelegt und lassen das große Interesse erkennen, daß die Künstlerin an der Auseinandersetzung mit alpenländischer Volkskunst hatte. After extensive travels, sojourns in Paris, and experiments with new stylistic approaches, she returned to Germany. In 1931 she once again settled in Murnau, where she lived with her second life companion, the art historian and philosopher Johannes Eichner, in the house she had already shared with Kandinsky in 1909. Within her artistic practice, this return also signified a rediscovery of her painterly beginnings from that formative period. Münter turned her attention to the vigorous and chromatically intense character of the surrounding landscape and to the colourful vernacular art of the region – above all, to the reverse glass paintings found in many of the local churches, distinguished by their clarity of form, emphatic contours, and bright hues. Her painting reveals the holistic nature of her gaze, the essence of which rests upon a personal process of graphic simplification, enabling her to maintain a consistent distance from nature. Flower still lifes became a central feature of her œuvre during the 1930s, although they already appear occasionally in her earlier ensembles. Her work now focused entirely on the expressiveness of flowers, directing the viewer’s attention to the compelling force of their colours: “I do not wish merely to paint what I see – I want to show the truth behind it.” (Gabriele Münter, quoted in Gabriele Münter: Ölbilder und Grafik, 1971). The luminous white and red of the luxuriantly shaped blossoms of zinnias and daisies, poised upon the dancing stems of the flowers, intensify one another against the warmth of the brown background. The species depicted in this work, painted in 1934, were among Münter’s favoured subjects, often drawn from the cottage gardens of the surrounding area: “It is the flowers that come from the garden into the house. An inexhaustible wealth of colour.” (quoted from Gabriele Münter, exh. cat., Lenbachhaus, Munich, 1992, n.p.).

Ab 1897 halbjähriger Besuch der Damenkunstschule von Willy Spatz in Düsseldorf, unternahm nach dem Tod der Mutter eine zwei Jahre dauernde Reise durch die USA. 1901 Übersiedelung nach München, dort setzte sie ihr Studium an der Malschule des Künstlerinnen-Vereins sowie anschließend an der Kunstschule "Phalanx" fort, wo sie von Wassily Kandinsky unterrichtet wurde. Es folgten zahlreiche gemeinsame Reisen, u.a. nach Tunesien, in die Niederlande, nach Italien und nach Frankreich.1906/07 entstand während eines Parisaufenthaltes mehr als ein Viertel des grafischen Werkes. Begegnung mit dem Künstlerpaar Marianne von Werefkin und Alexej Jawlensky, ab Sommeraufenthalte in Murnau u.a. mit vielen Malerfreunden.1914 Flucht in die Schweiz, später nach Skandinavien und Trennung von Wassily Kandinsky. Lebte nach ihrer Rückkehr abwechselnd in Köln, München und Murnau, siedelte 1925 nach Berlin über. Nach 1937 Ausstellungsverbot durch die Nationalsozialisten. Namensgeberin für den Gabriele Münter Preis, das Münter-Haus in Murnau ist heute eine Gedenkstätte.
