Eadweard Muybridge is today best known as father of motion study, with his 1878 The Horse in Motion series of cabinet cards acknowledged to be the first example of chronophotography, a precursor to the motion picture, ever produced. After a falling out with Leland Stanford, who had originally commissioned Muybridge to create The Horse in Motion as a means of settling a bet, Muybridge moved to Philadelphia, where he continued his motion studies. In 1887 he produced Animal Locomotion, comprising photographs of men and women, often nude, performing mundane tasks in Muybridge's studio. This work is credited with creating a better understanding of biomechanics and are considered a landmark study in movement. This lot is located in Chicago.

The Modoc War was an armed conflict between the Indigenous Modoc people and the United States Army which took place in northern California and southern Oregon from 1872-73 in response to the U.S. government's systematic genocide, in coordination with white settlers, of Indigenous peoples in California throughout the 19th century. The present images were photographed by Eadweard Muybridge during the early stages of the U.S. Army's campaign to quelch the rebellion. The Modoc leader Captain Jack became a sympathetic figure among the American people for his fight to retain his ancestral lands. This lot is located in Chicago.

Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) was an English photographer important for his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion, and early work in motion-picture projection. He is known in particular for his work on animal locomotion, using multiple cameras to capture motion in stop-motion photographs, and his zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip used in cinematography. The work presented here is Muybridge‘s groundbreaking depiction of the locomotion of horses using a series of still photographs. Muybridge was hired by race-horse owner Leland Stanford to settle the public debate and Stanford‘s private bet over whether all of a horse‘s hooves left the ground at the same time during a gallop. Muybridge arranged cameras down a length of track, rigged to take still images as the horse passed. The experiments were successful, proving that horses briefly raised all four feet while running. Muybridge and Stanford fell out, however, when Stanford published the results without crediting Muybridge, who later sued unsuccessfully. Muybridge‘s work was a significant leap in the study of locomotion. He continued his efforts by photographing the movements of humans and other animals. The zoopraxiscope, which he invented to display the images in sequence, inspired the first motion picture systems.

    Animal Locomotion: An Electrophotographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Movements. 1872-1885. 6 collotypes on plates. Each between 45 x 49 cm and 48,5 x 61,5 cm. Each with printed caption, plate number and Muybridge's copyright title. - - Eadweard Muybridge was renowned for his groundbreaking work in motion studies. In 1878, he famously captured The Horse in Motion, a series demonstrating that during a horse’s gallop, all four hooves are off the ground simultaneously - a subject of debate at the time. Building on this success, Muybridge expanded his studies to include various animals and people, photographing over 100,000 images between 1884 and 1885. These efforts culminated in the 1887 publication Animal Locomotion, comprising 781 collotype plates that provided an unprecedented analysis of movement, influencing both scientific research and the arts. This selection of photographs features mostly human subjects from Muybridge’s Animal Locomotion series, including a toddler crawling (Plate 471), a man pushing a cart (Plate 393), two nude male wrestlers engaged in various holds and throws (Plate 529), a nude male throwing a ball (Plate 319), a nude male catching a ball (Plate 288), as well as a rider on a horse (Plate 578). – Edges of plates show time-staining, along with some tears and water stains; however, the images remain unaffected and are in very good condition. - - Lit.: Eadweard Muybridge. London, Chapman & Hall 1899 und 1913. Beide mit zahlreichen ganzseitigen Bildserien und einigen Abbildungen. Weinroter Originalkalikoband mit gold- bzw. blindgeprägten Titeln. Animals in Action in erster Auflage, Human Figure in sechster, erstmals erschienen 1901. - Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) gilt als Begründer der »Chronofotografie«. Sein »Zoopraxiskop« war einer der ersten Filmprojektoren. Die beiden Bände stellen gleichsam einen Ausschnitt aus Muybridges monumentalem, elfbändigen Fotobuch »Animal Locomotion« dar. Im Auftrag von Leland Stanford fotografierte er 1872 erstmals den Bewegungsablauf eines galoppierenden Pferdes. In den Folgejahren perfektionierte er die Aufnahmetechnik und untersuchte die Bewegungen von zahlreichen Tieren und später auch die des Menschen.
