Künstlerinfo: italienischer Bildhauer (1852 Florenz bis 1925 Lastra a Signa), Studium an der Accademia di Belle Arti in Florenz, Tätigkeit in Italien und zeitweise in Paris, wo er um 1900 gemeinsam mit seiner, ebenfalls als Bildhauerin tätigen Schwester in der Künstlerkolonie „Les Fusains“ am Montmartre lebte, Nannini schuf vor allem dekorative Kleinplastiken, Büsten und Statuetten aus Bronze, Marmor sowie chryselephantine Arbeiten (Bronze und Elfenbein), seine Werke stehen stilistisch zwischen spätem Historismus, dem Jugendstil und frühem Art déco und wurden u. a. von Pariser Kunstverlegern und Bronzegießereien wie Les Neveux de Jules Lehmann und Edmond Etling vertrieben. The figure of a lady dressed in a ball gown stands in slightly bowed posture on an octagonal base made of onyx. The use of different materials is particularly striking in this figure. The artist has chosen ivory for the body, while the dress is executed in bronze. With this choice of material, the artist has imitated both the texture of the skin and the shine of the silk dress. Chryselephantine is the term for figures made of ivory and metals. This technique goes back to classical antiquity, which originally combined gold and ivory. Nannini was influenced by the French sculpture of the second half of the 19th century and is mainly recorded for his Chryselephantines with gallant postures, as well as for bronze figures with scenes from the Napoleonic Wars. The statuette is signed 'R.Nannin' on the back of the dress. It is in a good overall condition with a slight chip on the nose and typical cracks in the ivory. The base shows light wear. The overall dimensions with base are 29 cm. Raphaël Nannini (active 1870-1895) Raphaël Nannini was born in Florence and there executed bronzes and ivory figures for French foundries like Les Neveux de J. Lehmann and Edmond Etling.
