Makinti Napanangka Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1930 - d. 2011

Makinti Napanangka (1932- 2011) was a senior Pintupi Aboriginal artist, who lived at Kintore Community and in her final years in Alice Springs. Makinti began painting in 1995 as a member of the Haasts Bluff – Kintore painting project conducted at Kintore. Makinti quickly developed her own style and maintained her individual look throughout, painting continuously from 1995, aside from an enforced break due to a cataract operation in 1998.

Makinti Napanangka ‘s paintings are often the stories of the Kungka Kutjarra (Two Women), Ancestor figures whose travels cover great distances from Pitjantjajara country, then north east through to and beyond Haasts Bluff and Papunya. Such journeys include numerous ceremonial sites, ceremonial activities and food gathering.

Makinti’s images often comprise hairstring skirts, these skirts are woven by the women from human hair using a simple spindle made of two sticks, and belts worn by women in ceremonies. Makinti did not concern herself with neatness, or the painstaking ‘dot by dot’ approach. Her bands of lines can form into arcs, and create patterns that twist and bend. She is very different from all her Aboriginal art contemporaries. Makinti Napanangka’s work is represented in major public and private collections.

Japingka Gallery has exhibited the work of Makinti Napanangka over a number of years including the exhibitions –

2008 Women’s Law
2006 Luminaries of the Desert
2005 Across Skin-Women Artists of the Western Desert

MN0701158 PROVENANCE Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Springs, Northern Territory Private collection, Melbourne, acquired in 2007 ESSAY The richly-coloured expressive compositions of senior Pintupi artist Makinti Napanangka act as visual recollections of the artist’s deep cultural understanding and authority, with each of her painterly compositions visually encoded with Pintupi ancestral and ceremonial knowledge. Recurring across her oeuvre Napanangka depicted the designs associated with the rock hole site of Lupulnga, over which she had custodial rights. Through her compositions of sweeping and wavering linear planes in the shades of yellow, orange, blue and white, Napanangka translates elements related to the cultural stories of the Peewee (small bird) Dreaming and the travels of the Kungka Kutjarra (Two Ancestral Women) associated with this ceremonial site of Lupulnga.   Napanangka joined Papunya Tula Artists in 1996 and prior to her death in 2011, was the most senior woman painting with Papunya Tula Artists. Stylistically, as reflected by Hetti Perkins, the visual language of Napanangka’s works owe ‘more to the gesture of hand-painting ochre onto the body for women’s ceremonies, than to the meticulous application of dots that characterises men’s ceremonial and contemporary art making.’1   The undulating and twisting forms that denote Untitled, 2007, exemplifies Napanangka’s haptic and rhythmic approach. In this work, Napanangka reflects her mastery in enlivening the gently entwined and flowing gestural linear bands of alternating yellow, white and orange hues, in an artistic gesture to echo the movement of the spun hair-string skirts (nyimparra), worn in Pintupi women’s ceremonies, in reference to the Kungka Kutjarra. As Perkins states ‘the celebratory nature of these performances is expressed in the hedonistic play of colour and form across the painting’s surface.’2   1. Makinti began painting in 1994, when a women’s painting project was organised for the Haasts Bluff and Kintore communities. Her gestural style and bold line work were derived from painting with her fingers dipped in earth ochres onto women's bodies for ceremony. The tactile surfaces of her paintings reflect this touching and sensing, while the images serve to revive the journeying of her two female ancestors, the Kungka Kutjarra, as they dance their way across the country. Their travels follow the desert water sources and, particularly in Makinti’s art, Lupulnga, the rockhole where she was born, and where her connections to her spiritual origins are felt. “Care for country” is an important motivation for this bond, as the water sources must be cleared of debris and sand to keep them, and the life they support, fresh and flowing. The lines throughout the work invoke the body painting for women’s ceremonies and more particularly represent spun hair-string, which is used to make belts worn by women during ceremonies associated with this Rockhole site.

She first started painting at Haasts Bluff in the mid-1990s during the later stages of her life, but only the start of a very prolific and significant painting career. Napanangka was one of the many significant Pintupi women who worked on the collaborative Haasts Bluff/Kintore women's painting project - a series of works mostly completed in 1994 that signified the start of the Pintupi women's recognition within Western Desert art. Previously, these significant female artists had predominantly worked on paintings with their husbands and male relatives, but now were free to develop their own individual artistic styles and reputations. By the early 2000s, Makinti was living in Kintore as one of the most senior woman painters at Papunya Tula Artists. Following on from a cataract operation, it was here that her style developed into the sweeping arcs and lines in vivid hues that she is now recognised for. Her works commemorate women's performative and ritual customs, especially the nyimparra dances featuring the hand-spun string skirts made of human hair. Her expressive lines are reminiscent of the movement of the skirts and lines created in the earth during performance. In 2011, Makinti Napanangka was posthumously recognised when she was named a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to the arts and women painters of Western Desert Art. Most recently, Gagosian gallery exhibited Two Generations: Desert Painters of Australia at their renowned Hong Kong gallery, featuring not just the work of Makinti Napanangka but also this specific painting as a key example of Makinti's significant place within the artists of the Western Desert.
