Provenance: Livingston Auction Inc., Edison, NJ, United States, February 06, 2021, lot 6. Heorhiy Narbut was a seminal figure in the renaissance of graphic and folk arts that occurred in Ukraine in the first half of the 20th century. He illustrated books of fairy tales and fables, he painted and drew silhouette portraits of his friends as well as landscapes and still lifes, and he made toys and designed furniture. After studying in St. Petersburg, he returned to Ukraine after the February 1917 revolution and contributed graphic designs to the currency, postage stamps, seals, and charters of the Ukrainian Peoples Republic. One of a kind artwork.

In the latest semi-leather binding of the time. The illustrated publishing cover is preserved. Neat restoration of the edges of the cover. The last book decorated by E. Narbut in the period of his creativity in St. Petersburg. Narbut Egor (Georgy) Ivanovich (1886-1920) - artist, draughtsman and Illustrator, organizer of the higher graphic education in Ukraine. Disciple of M. V. Dobuzhinsky, German masters in Munich, I. Y. Bilibin. In 1913 he became a member of the ‘World of art’. The artist’s works are distinguished by an impeccable sense of style and deliberately dry ‘graphics’. He had made a lot of illustrations for children’s books of ed. Knebel, covers, title pages and book decorations for magazines ‘Apollon’, «Russian Icon», publishing house ‘Shipovnik’ (Rosehip), etc. НАРБУТ ГЕОРГИЙ ИВАНОВИЧ (1886-1920) Репнин С. Последняя книга петербургского периода творчества Е. Нарбута. Нарбут Егор (Георгий) Иванович (1886-1920) - художник, рисовальщик и иллюстратор, организатор высшего графического образования на Украине. Учился у М.В. Добужинского, у немецких мастеров в Мюнхене, И.Я. Билибина. В 1913 г. становится членом «Мира искусства». Работы художника отличаются безукоризненным чувством стиля и умышленно-суховатой «графичностью». Исполнил много иллюстраций для детских книг изд. Кнебеля, обложек, титульных листов и книжных украшений для журналов «Аполлон», «Русская Икона», издательств «Шиповник» и др.

FIRST EDITION, AN EXCELLENT COPY OF NARBUT'S MASTERPIECE, PRINTED FOR IVAN MIKHAILOVICH STEPANOV, and later in the S.L. Markov collection. Rare: only 30 copies were printed and sent to 'the greatest and most active figures in the Arts of the new age' (Mir Iskustva).
