Est: €5,000 - €6,000

Nocturnal church interior with figures, altarpieces and pipe organ. Oil on panel. C. 1645. Top and lower border enlarged. Provenance: Gallery Pintelon, Alost, 13.12.1984 Private collection, Heverlee Certificate and expert document: Robert Pintelon, 13.12.1984 This painting is a variant of a composition painted several times by both Peter Neefs I and Peter Neefs II between 1636 and 1644. One of the earliest versions from 1636, signed by Peter Neefs I is housed in the collection of the Rijksmuseum (inv. SK-A-289). On the one hand, Bernard G. Maillet argues that the interior of this church may have been inspired by the cathedral of Antwerp.¹ On the other hand, Gregory Martin points out that this church cannot be identified and is most likely an invention by Neefs that combines various architectural features of several churches in Antwerp.² Description FR Intérieur nocturne d'une église gothique avec quelques figures, pièces de retable et orgue. Huile sur panneau. Ca. 1645.

      • Pieter Neefs (1578/1590-1656/1661) – Circle, Interior of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp
        Jul. 10, 2023

Pieter Neefs (1578/1590-1656/1661) – Circle, Interior of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp

        Est: €2,000 - €4,000

The image shows the interior of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp towards the choir in a slightly loose design. Monumental altars stand on the pillars of the Gothic cathedral. After the city was reconquered by Spain in 1585, the Catholic faith was reintroduced to the city and the cathedral was re-equipped with numerous altars. The chancel is closed by a Renaissance screen, above which rises a triumphal cross with Mary and John. The cathedral is almost full with visitors and worshippers, including a group of kneeling worshippers. In the middle stands a priest in conversation with two men. A beggar is leaning against a pillar on the left. Some groups of figures appear in a painting of Antwerp Cathedral known only from an old photograph, see RKDimages, artwork number 106488.

        Pieter Neefs (Antwerp, circa 1576 - 1656/1661)

        Est: €14,000 - €16,000

Pieter Neefs (Antwerp, circa 1576 - 1656/1661) "Antwerp Cathedral" Oil on panel. Cradled. 100 x 120,5 cm. Pieter Neefs was the head of the family of painters with this surname and specialized in the representation of lit, nocturnal interiors, particularly of churches. He entered the painters' Guild of Saint Luke around 1609 or 1610. As the Prado states in their file on Neefs, “the soft tones and the sophisticated transitions between spaces of light and shadow are the main characteristics of his style”. The museum goes on to point out that "the exact date of his death is not known, but it must have been between 1656, the last year for which there is data on him, and 1661 when Cornelis de Bie speaks of him in the past tense in his 'Het gulden cabinet'” Neefs probably trained with Hendrick van Steenwijck. The painter and art theorist Vredeman de Vries and his studies on perspective had a great influence on the artist. He collaborated with important painters such as Frans Francken II, his son Frans Francken III, Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Sebastian Vrancx, among others. Highlights among his preserved paintings, are the panel "Church of Flanders" or "The Mass" (inv. 1605) from 1618, currently exhibited in the Prado; “Viaticum inside a church” (inv. 1600) from 1636, signed together with Frans Francken II, also in the Prado; as well as another panel also signed by both painters, "Evening Mass in a Gothic Church" (inv. 640), in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Attributed to PIETER DE NEEFS (Antwerp, ca.1578 - between 1656 and 1661). "Interior of a Church. Oil on panel. It has a label on the back from the Sala Pares (Barcelona). Size: 13 x 15.5 cm; 23 x 27 cm (frame). The main contribution of Pieter Neefs the Elder to the pictorial genre consisted in the representation of nocturnal sacred interiors illuminated by two spotlights, torches or candles. He also produced numerous works such as the one presented here: magnificent Gothic church interiors with soft tonalities and sophisticated transitions between the spaces of light and shadow, in which the artist places particular emphasis on spatial geometry - note the chequered pavements on the floor, which help to effectively construct the space in perspective. His detailed works fill the space with numerous small figures, typical of Flemish church interiors of the Baroque period, a genre in its own right. The figures are finely detailed, perfectly identifiable by their clothes and physiognomies. Most of them are gentlemen, although we also see some ladies and children, all dressed in 18th-century Flemish fashion, and even dogs frolicking in such magnificent scenery. A Flemish Baroque painter specialising in sacred architecture, principally church interiors, Pieter Neefs was the head of a lineage of painters of the same name that included his sons Lodewijk and Pieter the Younger. Although we know little corroborated information about his biography, we can confirm that Pieter Neefs the Elder joined the Guild of Painters of Saint Luke around 1610, at which point he first expressed an interest in depicting Gothic church interiors, using stereotypical models for their execution. Although some of these churches have not been identified because they are imaginary, in many other cases they are the interiors of important Flanders churches, such as the interior of the church of Saint Paul in Antwerp (now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). Peter Neefs the Elder frequently collaborated with other painters, principally with Frans Francken the Younger, with whom he signed in 1636 "Viaticum inside a Church" in the Museo del Prado and "Evening Mass in a Gothic Church" in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, but also with his son, Frans Francken III, with Gonzales Coques and with Pieter Brueghel the Younger, who painted the figures that populate some of his compositions. The exact date of his death is not known, but it must be between 1656, the last year for which there are records, and 1661 when Cornelis de Bie speaks of him in the past tense in his Het gulden cabinet (Antwerp, 1661). His work is now in the Museo del Prado in Madrid and the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie in The Hague, among other important institutions.

Signed and dated on the pillar to the right: Peeter Neefs 1625. 26.7 × 33.1 cm. Provenance: - Blake collection, Ireland (wax seal verso). - Private collection, North Yorkshire. - European collection. --------------- PEETER NEEFS d. M-0672). ---------------

        Est: €14,000 - €16,000

PIETER NEEFS THE OLD (Antwerp, ca.1578 - between 1656 and 1661). "Interior of a church". Oil on canvas. Re-inked. Signature partially erased, barely illegible. With French frame of the early eighteenth century adapted. Size: 44 x 58 cm; 65 x 79 cm (frame). Influenced by the painting of Hendrick van Steenwijk the Elder and by his son, Hendrick van Steenwijk the Younger and, through them, by Hans Vredeman de Vries, the main contribution of Pieter Neefs the Elder to the pictorial genre consisted of the representation of interior sacred nocturnes illuminated by two light bulbs, torches or candles. He also produced numerous works such as the one presented here: magnificent Gothic church interiors with soft tonalities and sophisticated transitions between the spaces of light and shadow, in which the artist places special emphasis on spatial geometry - note the checkerboard pavements on the floor, which help to effectively construct the space in perspective. In his detailed works, numerous small figures fill the space, typical of Flemish church interior painting of the Baroque period, a genre in itself. They are figures worked in great detail, perfectly identifiable by their clothes and physiognomies. Most of them are gentlemen, although we also see some ladies and children, all dressed in 18th century Flemish fashion, and even dogs frolicking in such magnificent scenery. Flemish Baroque painter specialized in the painting of sacred architectures, mainly church interiors, Pieter Neefs was the head of the family lineage of painters of the same name, in which his sons Lodewijk and Pieter the Younger stood out. Although we know little corroborated information about his biography, we can confirm that Pieter Neefs the Elder joined the St. Luke's Guild of Painters around 1610, at which time he first expressed his interest in the representation of Gothic church interiors, using stereotyped models for their execution. Although some of these churches have not been identified because they are imaginary, in many other cases they are the interiors of important temples in Flanders, as is the case of the interior of the church of St. Paul in Antwerp (a work currently preserved in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam). Peter Neefs the Elder often collaborated with other painters, mainly with Frans Francken the Younger, with whom he signed in 1636 "Viaticum inside a church" of the Prado Museum or "Evening Mass in a Gothic church" of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, but also with his son, Frans Francken III, with Gonzales Coques or with Pieter Brueghel the Younger, who painted the figures that populate some of his compositions. The exact date of his death is not known, but it must be between 1656, the last year for which there is information about him, and 1661, when Cornelis de Bie speaks of him in the past tense in his Het gulden cabinet (Antwerp, 1661). Currently his work is preserved in the Prado Museum in Madrid or in the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie in The Hague, among other important institutions.

Experience churches in the age of Rubens, hrsg. von Claire Baisier, Museum Mayer van den Bergh, S. 12–21).
