Therefore, some of the sketches demanded revisions. There is an inner office note to the printer in pencil, lower left corner of this drawing: "Take out tray and make him wave." A piece of paper with the new waving hand has been pasted over the drawing and the edge of the tray on the right whited out.

Private Files, the only enlisted man in an army of officers, joined Queen Ann Soforth of Oogaboo to conquer the world. Original navy blue cloth with earliest pictorial label, covers rubbed with some loss, bottom of spine frayed; internal fingermarks. EXTREMELY RARE, PRESENTATION COPY OF FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, warmly inscribed in ink on the ownership leaf: "Having been presented by her own true lover/ L. Frank Baum/ August 1910." The inscription must have been a private joke for Miss Kneedler (later Mrs. Brix) who could not have been more than 16 at the time, and was the daughter of Baum's friend Major William L. Kneedler, a military medical officer stationed in San Diego and later President Taft's personal physician. The Emerald City of Oz was intended to be the last of the Oz Books; and the publishers produced arguably the most beautiful volume of the entire series. Neill outdid himself in the numerous elaborate pen-and-ink drawings and the suite of sixteen exquisite watercolors that were printed with green metallic ink. Only the first printing has a full-color pictorial cover label highlighted with gold and silver ink that depicts Dorothy and her friends riding in the red wagon pulled by the Sawhorse through the Emerald City. All later printings used less elaborate designs. No other inscribed first printing of this title is known to have been offered at auction.

    Endpaper design for The Wonder City of Oz , pen and ink and white paint, 313 x 483 mm. Published : The Wonder City of Oz by John R. Neill (Chicago: Reilly & Lee Co., 1940), endpapers. Provenance : Frank O'Donnell, Reilly & Lee Co., Chicago. When Ruth Plumly Thompson, the second Royal Historian of Oz, decided to retire in early 1940, the publishers Reilly & Lee invited John R. Neill, the illustrator of all but the first Oz book, to succeed her. He wrote and illustrated three titles shortly before his death. Neill was in the habit of filling the endpapers for many books in the series with portraits of Oz characters. Among the very best is this drawing for The Wonder City of Oz . Several of the faces were used in the headpieces for Chapters 3 and 8 as indicated in the printer's notes below the drawing. Note that Neill misspelled "Scarecrow."

Among the Oz celebrities riding in the Wizard's magic automobiles in this elaborate drawing are Ozma, Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, Tik Tok, the Patchwork Girl and the Wizard himself. The head of the largest scalawagon in the foreground also served as the spine device on the dust wrapper.
