It's real flat country with saltbush. Tarpu is important for that big law ceremony. Big mob of people were killed here back in the Jumangkarni (dreamtime), when a big star crashed down from the sky. Tarpu is the top waterhole, the bottom ones are Wayampajarti the one on the left is good for drinking that one on the right he no good.     Jimmy Nerrimah was born at a swamp called Miyitinynanguwu, 500 km south east of Derby. He went through the law at Lumpu Lumpu and lived a nomadic existence in the desert until his 60s. As a fully initiated Walmajarri man, he knew all of the waterholes and soakages throughout his country. He lived in the desert, moving around totally reliant on these sources of water. He finally left the bush in his 60s and worked for a time at Nerrimah Station, where he got his 'white fella' name. In this work, he depicts a series of waterholes (jillas) on his country, Wayampajarti, in the north-western area of the Great Sandy Desert.

    Jimmy Nerrimah’s country was Wayampajarti, a jila (permanent waterhole) in the north-western area of the Great Sandy Desert. He was born 500 km south-east of Derby, where he went through the ‘law’. As a fully initiated Walmajarri man, he knew all of the waterholes and soakages throughout his clan lands and lived in the desert, moving around totally reliant on his intimate knowledge of country. He finally left the bush in his 60s and worked for a time at Nerrimah Station where he got his 'white fella' name. In old age he settled at Loomu, an outstation near Derby where he became a painter of renown.

    Jimmy Nerrimah was born in the desert and grew up moving with his family throughout Walmajarri country from one waterhole to the next. He was in his late teens when his father brought him to the station country to escape a very large fire that was burning in his country around Tapu. He went through law at Lumpu and lived in the bush until, in his sixties, he began working on Nerrimah Station. He began painting at the beginning of the 1990s. In this painting, Nerrimah has depicted the Jila (living water) at Nagalturrurangu with jilji (sand dunes) all around.

He moved to live out his final years at Looma, an outstation in the west Kimberley near Derby.
