HELLS GATE WOODCUT WOLDEMAR NEUFELD SIGNED

          Est: $800 - $1,100

Original Woldemar Neufeld (1909-2002) Woodblock of Hells Gate Bridge, New York, at night. Signed and inscribed in pencil by the artist. Professionally framed and matted. Measures 14x12x3/4 in frame. Weight 2 pds. PROVENANCE: The Estate of R. John Holmgren, noted American Illustrator and friend of the artist. The Iconic Hell Gate Bridge (originally the New York Connecting Railroad Bridge or The East River Arch Bridge) is a 1,017-foot steel through arch railroad bridge in New York City. The bridge crosses the Hell Gate, a strait of the East River, between Astoria in Queens and Randalls and Wards Islands in Manhattan. Woldemar Neufeld was born on November 10, 1909 in Waldheim, a village of German speaking Mennonites in the south of Russia. Although his earliest artistic efforts often centered on imitating the bridge building designs of his engineer father, or the farm implement machinery produced by his industrialist grandfather, he also studied in the use of oils and watercolors when he was a teenager. Following the trauma of his father's political execution in 1920, and his mother's marriage to a leading Mennonite bishop and man of letters, Woldemar fled with his new enlarged family from Russia to Canada. After one-man shows in Kitchener and Waterloo in 1934 and 1935, Neufeld left Canada, and from 1935 to 1939 studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where upon graduation he won the prestigious Agnes Gund Scholarship. He moved to New York in 1945 and became known as Artist Laureate of the East River for his expressionistic and exuberant birds, tugboats and waterscapes. In 1949, he moved his family to New Milford, where he established a studio, gallery and art school. He ran a summer art school until 1965, serving as art director of East River Artists in New York City from 1948 to 1975, and art director of the Millbrook School in Millbrook, N.Y. from 1953 to 1972.He was best known for his oils and watercolors, but he also was a sculptor and printmaker. In 1967 he began making constructivist and kinetic sculpture. His works have been collected by (among a great many others) the New York Metropolitan Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Library of Congress.
