▲ Max Neumann (German, b.1949) Untitled

    Est: £1,000 - £1,500

▲ Max Neumann (German, b.1949) Untitled signed 'Max Neumann' and dated 'Juni 1997' u.r., mixed media on canvas (100 x 84.5cm; framed 105 x 90cm) Footnote: Max Neumann is a German contemporary painter whose work centres on pared-back, enigmatic figures and heads. His forms often sit somewhere between portrait, mask and silhouette, giving them a quiet, symbolic presence rather than a specific identity. His paintings feel still, dreamlike and slightly unsettling, with figures placed in open, uncertain spaces. In this lot, the elongated figure, textured with fragments of newspaper, is typical of Neumann’s visual language: simple at first glance, but loaded with atmosphere and ambiguity. Condition Report: The paint on the left half of the painting has fine cracking with surface scuffs, abrasions and surface dirt, possibly mould. Several cracks to the green paint which has a light, bumpy appearance in the upper right quarter. Time staining to newspaper collage. Not examined under UV light, for a full report please contact the department.

MAX NEUMANN (Saarbrücken, Germany, 1949) "Satan", 1986. Mixed media on cardboard. Signed and dated in the upper area. Titled on the back.

    Est: €2,000 - €2,200

MAX NEUMANN (Saarbrücken, Germany, 1949) "Satan", 1986. Mixed media on cardboard. Signed and dated in the upper area. Titled on the back. Measurements: 103 x 73 cm. In "Satan", the artist does not represent the devil from a traditional religious iconography, but as a set of forms and a stylized human face, almost archetypal, embodying psychological tensions rather than biblical narratives. The image, reduced to the essentials and executed with an economy of formal resources, conveys unease and confronts the viewer with a direct, frontal and silent presence. In the context of post-war Germany and the Cold War, the work can be read as a reflection on the human condition, evil and identity, rather than as a literal religious allegory. Neumann explores the demonic as a constitutive part of the modern subject, The German painter Max Neumann has participated in numerous solo exhibitions in German and foreign galleries, as well as exhibitions at the Saarland Museum, Saarbrücken, and the Folkwang Museum, Essen, two of the most renowned German museums of contemporary art, which shows that Max Neumann is a recognized artist whose work is represented in important institutional, public and private collections around the world. He currently lives in Berlin. He trained from 1969 to 1977 at the art schools of Saarbrucken, Karlsruhe, Berlin. Est: €7,000 - €8,000

MAX NEUMANN (Saarbrücken, Germany, 1949) Untitled, 1990 Oil on paper adhered to canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. With label of the Maeght gallery in Barcelona. Measurements: 220 x 180 cm. The work that we show immerses us in a dark atmosphere, which suggests a latent violence. Max Neumann developed a personal style of great forcefulness. He is an artist already installed in his own universe, which slips between abstraction and an enigmatic figuration. The German painter Max Neumann has participated in numerous solo exhibitions in German and foreign galleries, as well as exhibitions at the Saarland Museum, Saarbrücken, and the Folkwang Museum, Essen, two of the most renowned German museums of contemporary art, which shows that Max Neumann is a recognized artist whose work is represented in major institutional, public and private collections around the world. He currently lives in Berlin. He trained from 1969 to 1977 at the art schools of Saarbrucken, Karlsruhe, Berlin. Selected solo exhibitions: 2015 -Gallery Bruce Silverstein, New York 2014 Galerie Thomas Levy, Hambourg Galerie Xenon, Bordeaux Galerie Vidal-Saint Phalle, Paris 2013- Galerie Stefan Röpke, Cologne?
