George Harbin's copy.- Witchcraft, New England.- Hutchinson (Francis) An Historical essay concerning witchcraft, first edition, half-title, final advertisement f., occasional spotting or staining, lightly browned, contemporary blind-stamped panelled calf, joints splitting, but holding firm, spine ends little chipped, one lower corner worn, lower cover scuffed, rubbed, [Howes 848; Sabin 34063; ESTC T99484], 8vo, Printed for R. Knaplock, at the Bishop's Head, and D. Midwinter, at the Three Crowns in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1718. ⁂ Hutchinson (1660-1739) was an Anglican minister in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, which saw its own witch trials in 1599 and 1694. The present work helped debunk much of the superstition surrounding witchcraft. Chapter V is devoted to the New England witch trials (which resulted in 19 hangings), and includes an attack on Cotton Mather for his defence of the proceedings in his Wonders of the invisible world, 1693. Provenance: George Harbin (c. 1665-1744), non-juror and historical writer, who was chaplain and librarian to Thomas Thynne, 1st Viscount Weymouth (ink surname to upper corner of front free endpaper); Edward Haywood (contemporary ink inscription to title).

George Henry Durrie (1820-1863) was an American artist whose work is closely associated with the landscapes of New England. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Durrie's early life was rooted in the region, and his connections to the state profoundly influenced his artistic career. Durrie received his initial training in art in New York, but his work was deeply inspired by the Connecticut countryside. He often painted winter scenes and rural landscapes that reflected his intimate knowledge of the local environment. His paintings frequently depict the farms, homes, and snow-covered vistas of New England, capturing the essence of the region's seasonal beauty with remarkable accuracy.

Drew was born 21 December 1875 in Massachusetts. He was a member of the Independent Artists Association. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design and they have him recorded as living at 745 Columbus Ave., N.Y. in the year 1898. He also exhibited at the Allied Artists of America, which was established in 1914, Salons of America, N.Y. State Fair, Newark State Fair, Newark Museum and New York Museum of Science & Industry. Although there is little known about the personal life of George W. Drew, his paintings appear on the art market quite often. It is obvious that his work has always been well received because of the numerous exhibitions he has participated in. He is known for his rustic luminous depictions of the Nineteenth Century American Landscape. Like many of the Hudson River Painters, Drew captures the effects of light from within the canvas. He is a master of perspective; his landscapes are classically and harmoniously balanced, leaving the viewer to gently rest their eyes on the rustic countryside.

"Very rare first edition, signed by Orwell and other contributors, including Inez Holden, Stevie Smith, Betty Miller and Olivia Manning. This is the first book publication of Orwell's essay, A Hanging, which had first appeared under the name E. Blair in the periodical Adelphi in August 1931. It was printed again in the 1950 collection, Shooting an Elephant. One of Orwell's key works, A Hanging recounts the author's observation of an execution in Burma. In a famous passage, Orwell relates how despite the prisoner's immediate fate he neatly sidesteps a puddle on his way to the gallows, an automatic and intensely human act. Analogous moments pepper Orwell's later writing and are recalled in terms throughout his masterpiece, Nineteen Eighty-Four. Fenwick, B.26. Octavo.
