GEORGE ORWELL (CONTRIBUTES) The New Savoy George Orwell (Contributes) "ORWELL, George (Contributes) (1903-1950). The New Savoy. London: The New Savoy Press, [1946]. "Very rare first edition, signed by Orwell and other contributors, including Inez Holden, Stevie Smith, Betty Miller and Olivia Manning. This is the first book publication of Orwell's essay, A Hanging, which had first appeared under the name E. Blair in the periodical Adelphi in August 1931. It was printed again in the 1950 collection, Shooting an Elephant. One of Orwell's key works, A Hanging recounts the author's observation of an execution in Burma. In a famous passage, Orwell relates how despite the prisoner's immediate fate he neatly sidesteps a puddle on his way to the gallows, an automatic and intensely human act. Analogous moments pepper Orwell's later writing and are recalled in terms throughout his masterpiece, Nineteen Eighty-Four. Fenwick, B.26. Octavo. Original yellow wrappers printed in black (light creases); housed in a quarter black morocco and beige cloth box. "

A snow-covered silhouette of New York in the background, and a pilot vessel in the foreground. In a new, gilded frame under glass, 32 x 42 cm. Robert Schmidt-Hamburg, along with Willy Stöwer or Hans Bohrdt, one of the best known german maritime painters, was self-educated, and made numerous sea voyages, some as a deckhand, enlisted in the German Imperial Navy at the beginning of World War I and served on the SMS "Lothringen". Because of his great talent, he rapidly became a naval war artist. In his greatest period of productivity between the world wars, he worked, i. a. for Norddeutsche-Lloyd. Although born a Berliner, out of love for Hamburg, he added the city to his name, Schmidt-Hamburg.
