Hugh Newell was a painter of genre, still lifes, landscape and portraits born in Belfast, Ireland. He lived in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Maryland. He is most well known for his genre paintings. He is a member of the Irish School of Painters. He studied at the Academy d’Anvers and continued his studies in Paris under Couture and at the Royal College of Art in London. He was principal at Women’s School of Design, Pittsburg, Head of Maryland Inst., of Art and Design, and professor of drawing at Johns Hopkins Univ. Member: American Watercolor Society.

Newell 1858 PROVENANCE: From the private collection of Lois Stephens, Olympic Equestrian, Greenbrier Sporting Club, West Virginia. NOTE: Lois Stephens was a dressage trainer, rider, and Hanoverian horse breeder. This painting is a faithful, reduced scale copy of Rosa Bonheur's celebrated 1852 painting, The Horse Fair, now in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The artist Hugh Newell, to whom the copy is attributed, studied in Antwerp, Paris and London, and would have had access to Bonheur's massive painting at several junctures while it made the rounds to many European and British cities between 1853 and 1857. In 1857 The Horse Fair crossed the Atlantic where it was on view in New York from 1857-1858. HID04901242017

Oil on canvas, 22 x 17 1/2 in., framed in an oval format, under glass. Condition: Not examined out of frame. N.B. This work was commissioned by the sitter's husband, Eugene Sutherland, when Newell resided at the Sutherland estate in Montclair, New Jersey. The portrait was based on a daguerreotype of the sitter at age 7.

Newell 1859", oil on paper mounted on fiberboard, 11 x 8 in.; painted wood frame with gilt liner some chipping at edges, some lifting of paper, scattered retouch primarily at edges; frame resurfaced, abrasions Provenance: Perry Hopf, Kennebunk, Maine Newell arrived in America in 1852 and almost immediately could be found advertising as a portrait painter in Baltimore, Maryland. For a brief period during the Civil War, Newell returned to Ireland. After the war he eventually returned to Baltimore, heading the Art School of the Maryland Institute.
