Marc Andrew Newson CBE (born 20 October 1963) is an industrial designer who works in aircraft cabin design, product design, furniture design, jewellery, and clothing. His style uses smooth geometric lines, translucency, strength, transparency, and tends to have an absence of sharp edges.
Newson was born in Sydney, Australia, and in 1984 he graduated at the Sydney College of the Arts in Sydney, Australia studying jewellery and sculpture.[2] In 1986 he was awarded a grant from the Australian Crafts Council and staged a first exhibition featuring the Lockheed Lounge. The following year he moved to Tokyo, where he mostly worked with the designer company Idée and where he created works such as the Super Guppy lamp (1987) and the Orgone lounge (1989).[3] He moved to Paris in 1991 where he set up a studio.[4] He describes his 1988 Embryo Chair as "one of the first pieces where I hit upon a discernible style".[5]
He co-founded the Ikepod watch company in 1994, leaving the company in 2012.[6][7] In 1997 he moved to London, where he and business partner Benjamin de Haan set up Marc Newson Ltd though he still has a house in Paris. He is currently adjunct professor in design at Sydney College of the Arts (where he first studied sculpture and jewellery) and is the creative director for Qantas.[8] In 2005, he was selected as one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people of the year.
His work has become amongst the highest selling in auctions. One of his three Lockheed Lounge chairs sold for $968,000 at Sotheby's in 2006,[9] and £1,100,000 at a 2009 auction at Phillips de Pury & Company.[10] At the 2006 Design Miami fair he produced 12 Chop Top tables, all of which sold out in 20 minutes at an estimated $170,000.[5] In April 2015 his Lockheed Lounge chair sold at auction for £UK2.4 million ($AU4.69 million), making it the most expensive object ever sold by a living designer.[11]
Every year he races one of his four vintage sports cars – an Aston Martin, a Lamborghini, a Ferrari and a Cisitalia, in the Italian Mille Miglia and was quoted as saying: "I'm not a motor head, I don't like the new versions of any of those cars."[12]
Newson was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2012 New Year Honours for services to design.[13][14]
He joined Apple Inc. in September 2014.[15]
In June 2019, it was reported that he will join Sir Jony Ive in their own independent firm, LoveFrom.

The Sine table belongs to the early phase of Marc Newson’s collaboration with Cappellini and holds a significant place in his career: it was conceived as part of his first project aimed at creating accessible furniture suitable for mass production, marking a departure from the handcrafted pieces and limited editions that had characterized his early work. The designer himself defined the principle of the series based on a simple structure combined with a second material for the surfaces. The lightness of the tubular base and the expansiveness of the tabletop reflect this pursuit of structural economy, functional clarity, and ease of manufacture. At the same time, the slight tilt of the legs and the refined profile of the tabletop introduce the dynamic tension and continuity of lines that would come to distinguish Newson’s later work. More than a purely minimalist piece, the Sine bears witness to the moment when the designer began to translate his sculptural language into the realm of industrial furniture. The Cappellini label confirms that it was produced by the Italian firm. Marc Newson is one of the most influential figures in contemporary design, with a body of work that spans furniture, objects, transportation, timepieces, and interiors. His designs are held in institutions such as MoMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which include various pieces representative of his career

Composed of transportable furniture elements, these multifunctional modules could easily be transformed into boutiques, pop-up stores, and exhibition stands. Marc created a range of plastic display modules in bright colors: red, yellow, blue, green, black, and white. Their versatility is fully revealed in their practical use. The elements of the modular system were arranged to showcase the flagship products. When closed, these modules easily snapped together, forming a closed box that concealed the interior of the compartments. In addition, Marc Newson designed tables and chairs in the same aesthetic vein as the exhibition modules. Designed to be functional, these chairs fully exploit the technical properties of the polypropylene used. Manufactured by rotomolding, they are made from polypropylene. This process gives them great strength and excellent impact resistance, and allows for the creation of large hollow shapes without additional assembly.
