(1782 Wien - 1863 ebenda) Früchtestillleben Auf einem steinernen, gestuften Untergrund vor neutralem Hintergrund komponiertes, üppiges Arrangement aus einem Weidekorb mit äußerst naturgetreu wiedergegebenen Weintrauben und -reben, Feigen, Haselnüssen sowie einem Kürbis und einer Apfelsine. Das großformatige Blatt ist ein stiltypisches Werk Niggs, der als einer der besten österreichischen Stilllebenmaler in der 1. Hälfte des 19. Jhs. gilt. Der Künstler studierte an der Akademie bei Johann Baptist Drechsler und spezialisierte sich auf Blumenstücke. Er führte seine meisterhaften Stillleben sowohl in Öl-, Pastell- und Gouachemalerei als auch auf großformatigen Porzellanplatten der Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur aus, welche er seit 1824 in vielen Ausstellungen zeigte. Magnificent arrangement of flowers in a basket on a marble bracket in a garden. Born in Vienna, Josef or Joseph Nigg (1782 - 1863) was the most famous flower painter at the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory under Emperor Franz II. He was hired by the manufactory in 1800 after or during his studies at the academy, and he worked there until 1843. He was in charge of flower painting as of 1816, and from 1835 onwards he taught flower painting in the manufactory's academy. Apart from his own floral compositions, he also created copies based on Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch.

We are grateful to Dr. Gerbert Frodl for confirming the authenticity of both gouaches on the basis of a photograph. --------------- JOSEPH NIGG (1782 Wien 1863) Gegenstücke: Blumenstillleben mit Tulpen, Pfingstrosen, Malven sowie verschiedenen Früchten, einem Vogelnest, Ameisen und Schmetterlingen. 1816. Gouache auf Papier. Eines unten rechts signiert: Joseph Nigg. Das andere links mittig datiert: 1816. Je 70 × 52 cm (Lichtmass). Gutachten: Dr. Gerbert Frodl, September 2019. Provenienz: Schweizer Privatsammlung. Die beiden Gouachen, die von Dr. Gerbert Frodl als „hervorragende Beispiele der Wiener Blumenmalerei“ qualifiziert werden, sind charakteristische Beispiele aus dem künstlerischen Schaffen des österreichischen Porzellan- und Blumenmalers Joseph Nigg. Mit einer Vielfalt aus fein ausgearbeiteten Details und einer in sich stimmigen, primär in Blautönen gehaltenen Farbpalette, laden sie zum Verweilen ein. Unter seinem Lehrmeister Johann Baptist Drechsler (1756–1811) an der Wiener Akademie, tritt er ab 1800 in die Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur ein und leitet 1816 die Abteilung für Blumenmalerei. Anders als die seines Lehrmeisters zeigen Niggs Kompositionen die Blütenpracht in ihrer ganzen Üppigkeit, jedoch ohne in einem barocken Pathos zu verfallen. Der Einfluss von Stilllebenmalern des niederländischen Goldenen Zeitalters, allen voran Jan van Huysum (1682–1749), ist nicht von der Hand zu weisen, wobei bei Nigg ein primärer Fokus auf die botanische Genauigkeit in der Darstellung der Blumen zu erkennen ist. Sein herausragendes, meisterhaftes Können, das ihn an die Spitze der Wiener Blumenmaler der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts katapultiert, zeigt sich zweifellos in den vorliegenden Gouachen, die bereits in ihrem Ursprung als Gegenstücke konzipiert sind. Die harmonisch ausbalancierten Kompositionen illustrieren eine Vielzahl verschiedener Blüten: Rosen, Kamelien, Anemonen, Pfingstrosen, Winden, Aurikel, Rittersporn, Hyazinthen, Schlafmohn, Apfelblüten. Dr. Frodl vermerkt hierzu in seinem Gutachten, dass das Arrangement weder eine gemeinsame Blütenperiode noch ein und derselbe Ort des Gedeihens, sondern allein die Kompositionskunst Niggs, vereint. Bemerkenswert ist Niggs Einsatz blautöniger Blüten, die deutlich seltener in der Natur anzutreffen sind und der Komposition somit einen besonders luxuriösen Hauch verleihen. Joseph Niggs Gesamtwerk zeichnet sich generell durch „höchste künstlerische und handwerkliche Qualität aus“, wie Dr. Frodl unterstreicht, und begeisterte somit Fachgenossen anderer europäischen Porzellanmanufakturen wie beispielsweise Sèvres in Frankreich. Dr. Gerbert Frodl hat diese beiden Gouachen anhand von Fotografien studiert und bestätigt deren Eigenhändigkeit.

Provenienz: Schweizer Privatbesitz. Die beiden Gouachen, die von Dr. Gerbert Frodl als „hervorragende Beispiele der Wiener Blumenmalerei“ qualifiziert werden, sind charakteristische Beispiele aus dem künstlerischen Schaffen des österreichischen Porzellan- und Blumenmalers Joseph Nigg. Mit einer Vielfalt aus fein ausgearbeiteten Details und einer in sich stimmigen, primär in Blautönen gehaltenen Farbpalette, laden sie zum Verweilen ein. Unter seinem Lehrmeister Johann Baptist Drechsler (1756–1811) an der Wiener Akademie, tritt er ab 1800 in die Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur ein und leitet 1816 die Abteilung für Blumenmalerei. Anders als die seines Lehrmeisters, zeigen Niggs Kompositionen die Blütenpracht in ihrer ganzen Üppigkeit, jedoch ohne in einem barocken Pathos zu verfallen. Der Einfluss von Stilllebenmalern des niederländischen Goldenen Zeitalters, allen voran Jan van Huysum (1682–1749), ist nicht von der Hand zu weisen, wobei bei Nigg ein primärer Fokus auf die botanische Genauigkeit in der Darstellung der Blumen zu erkennen ist. Sein herausragendes, meisterhaftes Können, das ihn an die Spitze der Wiener Blumenmaler der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts katapultiert, zeigt sich zweifellos in den vorliegenden Gouachen, die bereits in ihrem Ursprung als Gegenstücke konzipiert sind. Die harmonisch ausbalancierten Kompositionen illustrieren eine Vielzahl verschiedener Blüten: Rosen, Kamelien, Anemonen, Pfingstrosen, Winden, Aurikel, Rittersporn, Hyazinthen, Schlafmohn, Apfelblüten. Dr. Frodl vermerkt hierzu in seinem Gutachten, dass das Arrangement weder eine gemeinsame Blütenperiode noch ein und derselbe Ort des Gedeihens, sondern allein die Kompositionskunst Niggs, vereint. Bemerkenswert ist Niggs Einsatz blautöniger Blüten, die deutlich seltener in der Natur anzutreffen sind und der Komposition somit einen besonders luxuriösen Hauch verleihen. Joseph Niggs Gesamtwerk zeichnet sich generell durch „höchste künstlerische und handwerkliche Qualität aus“, wie Dr. Frodl unterstreicht, und begeisterte somit Fachgenossen anderer europäischen Porzellanmanufakturen wie beispielsweise Sèvres in Frankreich. Dr. Gerbert Frodl hat diese beiden Gouachen anhand von Fotografien studiert und bestätigt deren Eigenhändigkeit.

Diese äusserst qualitätsvollen Blumenstillleben sind charakteristische Beispiele aus dem künstlerischen Schaffen des österreichischen Porzellan- und Blumenmalers Joseph Nigg, der bei Johann Baptist Drechsler (1756-1811) an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Wien gelernt hatte. Anders als die seines Lehrers sind Niggs Kompositionen von einer besonderen Üppigkeit geprägt und zeigen die Blütenpracht in ihrer ganzen Fülle. Beinflusst von den Stilllebenmalern des niederländischen Goldenen Zeitalters sind Niggs Kompositionen stets ausgeglichen komponiert, wie auch bei diesen Gegenstücken zum Ausdruck kommt, wo die reifen Früchte im unteren Teil platziert werden und das Fundament bilden, während gegen oben die Feinheit der Blüten und die Schmetterlinge die Komposition erfüllen. Dr. Gerbert Frodl hat diese beiden Gouachen im Original studiert und die Eigenhändigkeit bestätigt. Er datiert sie um 1830. Die Arbeiten werden mit einer Echtheitsbestätigung von Dr. Frodl versteigert.
