MARCELLO NIZZOLI (1887-1969) MOTOSACOCHE. 1927. 39¼x27½ inches, 99½x69¾ cm. "Maga," Geneva. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and minor restoration in margins and image; repaired pin holes in corners. Nizzoli, who was an architect by training and considered one of the first Italian industrial designers (working for Olivetti), began his advertising career with the Maga agency in 1924. He was a bold artist with a strong sense of composition. In 1921, Dudovich and Nizzoli (along with Martinati) were appointed artistic directors of IGAP (Impresa Generale Affissioni Pubblicità). In this primary colored composition, "a 346cc Motosacoche 304 Tourisme motorcycle takes to the lemon-yellow sky, freed from the shackles of gravity, taking chunks of the mountain with it as it rises to new heights" (Crouse p. 60). Motosacoche grew to be the largest Swiss motorcycle manufacturer in the early 20th century, but its popularity steadily declined after the 1930s, finally ceasing motorcycle production in 1958. This is the rare smaller format. Crouse p. 60.

Best known for its signature drink, Bitter Campari, the company also produces wines, spirits as well as soft drinks. Presently, the Campari company is a global enterprise with its products in over 190 countries worldwide. Marcello Nizzoli (1887-1969) was an Italian illustrator, industrial designer and architect. Nizzoli created many large scale and Art Deco styled posters for the Campari company. Nizzoli was also the chief designer for Olivetti in the 1930s and was responsible for designing the iconic Lettera 22 portable typewriters in 1950. Nizzoli's design style can be characterized as a combination of organic form and functional machine production intended for mass production. This is the largest version of this poster. This stunning Cordial Campari vintage poster is one of his claims to fame, as he became well-known for his Art Deco posters for the brand. Like many of the well-known French poster artists, Nizzoli also illustrated popular magazine covers of the day, mostly working in Milan. In the 1950s, he also became known for industrial design when he created a line of typewriters. He is considered a master of mid-century Italian design and graphics. As the table is raked forward and down, the bottles and glass manage to stay upright, lunging toward the viewer in gravity-defying space. While the product stands sturdily off to the left, an apéritif glass gets a magically handsfree splash of soda water, creating the brand’s signature cocktail. Nizzoli was a most versatile artist: he was a painter, decorator, textile designer, and posterist. Many of his posters were for automobile companies. In 1938 he joined Olivetti and was responsible for some of their finest designs in the 1940s and 1950s. He produced a monograph on the firm in 1968. MARCELLO NIZZOLI (1887-1969) MOTOSACOCHE. 1927. 50½x35½ inches, 128¼x90¼ cm. "Maga," Geneva. Condition A-: minor repaired tears and restoration at edges; small replaced loss at right edge. Nizzoli, who was an architect by training and considered one of the first Italian industrial designers (working for Olivetti), began his advertising career with the Maga agency in 1924. He was a bold artist with a strong sense of composition. In 1921, Dudovich and Nizzoli (along with Martinati) were appointed artistic directors of IGAP (Impresa Generale Affissioni Pubblicità). In this primary colored composition, "a 346cc Motosacoche 304 Tourisme motorcycle takes to the lemon-yellow sky, freed from the shackles of gravity, taking chunks of the mountain with it as it rises to new heights" (Crouse p. 60). Motosacoche grew to be the largest Swiss motorcycle manufacturer in the early 20th century, but its popularity steadily declined after the 1930s, finally ceasing motorcycle production in 1958.
