The complete series of 8 prints of views from Amsterdam. On the title page with the address of the publisher and engraver Clement de Jonghe (on the Kalverstraat), who was active from 1640 to 1670 and also sold Rembrandt's prints. Nooms worked as a sailor for many years and travelled on Dutch merchant ships to the North African coast. He was probably self-taught as an artist, but his paintings and prints of ships and harbours he had visited quickly brought him recognition, not least because of their authenticity. Throughout his life, he proudly signed his paintings "Zeeman" as a reference to his first profession. Nooms created around 170 etchings, of which the two series on Amsterdam deserve special attention, as they are considered the forerunners of the numerous etched vedutas of the 18th century. They accurately capture the architectural features of the city. It seems as if he had captured the views of the centre of Amsterdam from a boat, as canals with various ships can be seen in the foreground of the vedutas. It is worth mentioning that Charles Meryon later copied the view of the Louvre from his series of views of Paris and its environs A well-travelled sailor himself, he greatly admired Noom's prints and dedicated his own series of Parisian vedute to him.
