ROSE O'NEILL KEWPIE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE INK ILLUSTRATION

    Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Rose Cecil (Cecilia) O'Neill (Missouri, 1874-1944) Tied in his highchair all the day. No air, no proper food, no play.'  The original pen and ink on paper illustration is titled in pencil lower left and signed lower right. By 1912, Rose O'Neill's Kewpie characters were so popular that she realized she could begin to leverage their fame to address serious social causes that were of concern to her. Issues like limits on child labor, humane working conditions for women, and reforms addressing poverty, exploitative cottage industries, and sweatshop-like home labor, as seen in the present drawing. She used her familiar, disarming figures to draw attention to the burdens placed on families-particularly working mothers and children-transforming visual charm into a vehicle for social critique. She also used the popularity of her Kewpie characters for the women's suffrage movement in 1915 when she illustrated a poster with the slogan 'Give Mother the Vote!' ROSE O'NEILL (1874-1944) INDIA INK ILLUSTRATION

    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Cecil Rose O'Neill (1874-1944) The Kewpiedoodle's Intentions Were so Kindly Early 20th Century. The original India ink illustration on paper is of the medium and subject matter commonly created for Puck Magazine, and other satiricals O'Neill worked for in the first decades of the 20th century. It is believed that when Rose O'Neill joined Puck in 1897, she was the only female illustrator on staff and for a time, was required to sign her work using only her last name to hide her gender. She produced an estimated hundreds of cartoons and over 600 illustrations for the magazine between the late 1890s and 1907. Some of these focused on political satire and addressed complex subjects like racism and women's suffrage. As a dedicated suffragist, she used the popularity of her Kewpie characters as a powerful tool for the women's suffrage movement, illustrating a poster in 1915 with the slogan 'Give Mother the Vote!' Overall framed size measures 28.25 x 21.25 inches. • ROSE O'NEILL (1874-1944) ORIGINAL OIL ILLUSTRATION
    Dec. 29, 2025

ROSE O'NEILL (1874-1944) ORIGINAL OIL ILLUSTRATION

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Cecil Rose O'Neill (1874-1944) A Pal For Your Palette Circa 1925. The bright, colorful, charming and rarely seen oil on artist's board was apparently commissioned by the Hendler Ice Cream company. It purportedly came from the Hendler family estate in Baltimore, Maryland, and was first auctioned by Soulis auctions in 2003. A paper logo for Hendler's Ice Cream, The Velvet Kind, is pasted over the oil painting lower left. The slogan '' A Pal for your Palate'' is lettered in oil paint lower center front. The work is signed by Rose O'Neill lower right. The upper right hand corner may have been shaded in a slightly different blue for purposes of advertising reproduction. Hendler's Ice Cream The Velvet Kind was a Baltimore institution founded in 1905 and run by Manuel Hendler after he bought out his partner in 1907. In 1912 he moved production into the massive former Baltimore City Passenger Railway cable-car powerhouse at 1100 E. Baltimore Street, turning the landmark industrial building into a modern creamery that helped make Hendler's a household name across the region. By the late 1920s the brand was acquired by Borden, while Hendler's marketing-famously including Kewpie imagery-remained a vivid part of Baltimore's advertising history for decades. Rose O'Neill Kewpie illustration paintings in this size and condition are very uncommon and especially desirable. Overall framed size measures 40.5 x 30 inches. Without proof of exemption, be aware that internet sales tax applies to all Internet transactions and local sales tax may apply to local pick-up transactions. We happily provide seamless in-house packing and shipping services on nearly everything we sell. Important! Our in-house shipping for this sale is not available until after January 5.
