However, which objective, apart from the creation of beauty, could be the purpose of art? In all circumstances, beauty is dependent upon reality. As a consequence, the elimination of art is the most beautiful objective ever as this would result in the circumstances of art feeding back into life. All pain or ailments in art lead back to the attempt, or half-hearted attempt, to annihilate art and to thereby validate it. Beauty is not static, but rather a dynamic concept that is constantly seeking to redefine itself, striving for the end of art. This can be clearly seen in all the classic ‘avant-garde shockers’ right up to Manzoni. Whereas yesterday one still considered that such stupidity could not be surpassed, today one is captivated by the veracity of artistic insight and the elegance of rebellion. Beauty has assumed a new appearance, which means that everything has remained the same. I can recognise this, but I cannot draw any conclusions because 1) once I have recognised this, I cannot become any smarter, and 2) if I were to stop making art, I would only have transported myself into another, particularly beautiful state of productivity. Since then, he has continually redefined the boundaries of the medium, engaging with it in ever-evolving ways. Drawing upon an extraordinary spectrum of styles and techniques, Oehlen persistently re-examines what painting can signify in the present day. His works navigate between abstraction and figuration, incorporating digital imagery and collage. A hallmark of his artistic practice is his ironic perception of reality, the integration of all facets of life into art, and a deliberate blurring of the lines between high culture and popular culture. Since the 1980s, Oehlen has explored the tree motif through a broad array of interpretations. “Untitled (Baum 52)” belongs to a more extensive series in which he overlays geometric forms—rendered in graduated, partially glazed hues of blue or red—onto luminous white aluminium dibond panels, positioning the central motif slightly off-centre.
