Superficie: 95% Yoichi Ohira, artista giapponese del vetro, è vissuto a Venezia per oltre venticinque anni fino alla sua scomparsa, ha sfidato gli attributi convenzionali dell'arte del vetro, tipicamente duro, fragile, freddo e pesante. I suoi vasi luminosi in vetro soffiato offrono un'eccezione tattile, invitando gli spettatori a maneggiarli come esemplari da Wunderkammer. Queste piccole e leggere creazioni invitavano all'esplorazione, mostrando il vocabolario di design astratto di Ohira ispirato da pietre preziose, avorio lucidato, rocce venate, acqua scintillante, agata, muschio e licheni. About the collection: The eight Yoichi Ohira vases offered in this auction were part of an extensive collection of art glass located in Ithaca, New York. The late collector's wife recalls their first glass purchase in a London antique shop circa 1985, which ignited a 30+ year passion for the genre. The couple and their daughter acquired pieces individually during their travels around Western Europe, Toronto, and New York, and ultimately amassed around 300 vessels and sculptures by artists including Fulvio Bianconi, Toots Zynsky, Carlo Scarpa, Ercole Barovier, Paolo Venini, Vittorio Ferro and others. "My husband became a student of the art he collected," recalls Mrs. N. and their daughter. "With each new artist he admired, he would buy books about them, and the biographies and catalogs became catalysts for acquiring more pieces. He was always looking for variety, and he would seek out individual pieces to round out a segment of the collection. When something caught his eye, he pounced on it, and if he couldn't have that particular piece, he'd search for one like it." ------------------------- "After working as a corporate designer, Ohira became independent and established his own style, with designs skillfully combining transparent and opaque glass. Ohira acquired ideas from Roman-period mosaic glass while also incorporating the forms of ceramics and lacquerware seen in the East Asian region. He skillfully harmonized the parameters of classic Western art with craft elements from the East. Having absorbed every aspect of the history of Venetian glass, Ohira sought to integrate Japanese and Venetian cultures and aesthetics.
