George Edgar Ohr Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1857 - d. 1918

George Edgar Ohr (July 12, 1857 – April 7, 1918) was an American ceramic artist and the self-proclaimed "Mad Potter of Biloxi" in Mississippi. In recognition of his innovative experimentation with modern clay forms from 1880–1910, some consider him a precursor to the American Abstract-Expressionism movement.

George Ohr was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, on July 12, 1857. He was the son of German immigrants who arrived in New Orleans c. 1850 and subsequently married and moved to Biloxi. George Ohr tried his hand at various trades before he became interested in ceramics in 1879, while an apprentice of Joseph Fortune Meyer. Ohr married Josephine Gehring of New Orleans on September 15, 1886. Ten children were born to the Ohrs, but only 6 survived to adulthood. George Ohr died of throat cancer on April 7, 1918.

Ohr studied the potter's trade with Joseph Meyer in New Orleans, a potter whose family hailed from Alsace-Lorraine, as did Ohr's. Ohr's father had established the first blacksmith shop in Biloxi and his mother ran an early, popular grocery store there.[5] In his lifetime, Ohr claimed to have made over 20,000 ceramic pieces. He called his work "unequaled, undisputed, unrivaled." In 1884, Ohr exhibited and sold his pottery at the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition in New Orleans. Of the hundreds of pieces he showed, Ohr boasted he showed "no two alike."

The 1894 fire that burned most of Biloxi also destroyed Ohr's workshop, and it has been noted that Ohr's post-fire works show tremendous "energy" and "fluidity." George Ohr called his pots "mud babies". Upon the destruction of his workshop and his work, he gathered the pieces that survived the fire, and although burned, he kept each piece, calling them his " burned babies".

Ribbed vase with ruffled rim, glazed with speckled interior, stamped G.E. OHR, Biloxi, Miss. h. 4 w. 3 in. George Edgar Ohr (1857-1918), the ÒMad Potter of BiloxiÓ, was an artist with a vision that was ahead of his time. Although active from 1879 until around 1910, it was not until his pottery was rediscovered half a century after his death that Ohr began to enjoy the reputation he felt he deserved. Ohr studied under Joseph Fortune Meyer, of Newcomb College Art Pottery, and moved freely between New Orleans, Louisiana and Biloxi, Mississippi for much of his career. Through his association with Meyer and extensive travels to attend fairs and expositions, Ohr was exposed to some of the best work of the Arts & Crafts movement and the American Renaissance. His work, however, would evolve technique in a way that set him apart from his contemporaries.

Jefferson". Impressed stamp on the base reading "G. E. OHR. Biloxi, Miss." with additional inscribed letters and numbers "U G81-81". 3 3/4" H x 4" W. Circa 1900. Note: An undated typed letter from the Smithsonian Institution accompanies this lot. It states that this piece was part of the collection of a private dealer that was available for sale at the Renwick Gallery Museum Shop. Biography: (Adapted from the Smithsonian Institution & The Everson Museum of Art & The Ohr-OKeefe Museum) The second of five children with little formal education, Ohr learned to make pottery as an apprentice to his friend Joseph Meyer who worked at the Newcomb College Art Pottery, and who also worked in Biloxi, Mississippi. After mastering the art of clay under the tutelage of Meyer, Ohr spent two years traveling the United States visiting various potteries. He returned to Biloxi in 1883 and established his own pottery studio. He prepared his own clay and glazes and was known for his exceptional ability to produce pieces with thin walls. Ohr was also adept at creating new shapes by "twisting, folding, crushing or denting the clay while the pot was still in a flexible state". He also was known for creating a great variety of glazes that were rich in color and also used in unusual combinations. Ohr would receive honors for his work at the New Orleans Cotton Exposition of 1884-1885 and at the St. Louis Exposition of 1904, among others. According to the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum "Ohr closed his pottery in 1910, packed away his collection, and asked that his heirs keep the collection untouched until 50 years after his death". His heirs honored this request and subsequently around 1972, Ojo Ohr sold approximately 7,000 pieces, to James and Miriam Carpenter, and antique dealers from New Jersey who began to market Ohr's work to collectors in the Northeast.
