ABSTRACT JAPAN AMERICAN OIL PAINTING BY KENZO OKADA

        Est: $100 - $150

Kenzo Okada, Japanese, American, 1902 to 1982, oil painting on canvas depicting an abstract composition. Signed lower right. Framed. Kenzo Okada is known for Geometric non obclandscape painting, mural. Kenzo Okada emigrated to the United States and arrived in New York in 1950, during the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement. His work underwent complete transformation. He became an abstract painter in the American fashion, but with an inexpressible Oriental nature, with textures reminiscent of Japanese fabric and the subtle, exquisite coloration of traditional Japanese painting. Later his work incorporated the knowledge of Zen, piercing with form and color and often incorporating figurative elements inspired by the ancient Japanese Noh drama. Okadas work uses characteristics of Yugenism from the Japanese word yugen referring to Japanese aesthetic values that emphasize suggestiveness. Using Western style canvases to express such themes, Okada would paint in white, hinting at the void often used in Japanese traditional paintings to show depth. One of a kind artwork.

He is best known for his lyrical Abstract Expressionist works made using muted shapes of color, which hover like collages over the canvas ground. Okada's aesthetics were rooted in Zen Buddhism, 17th century Japanese screen painting, and a devotional interest in the natural world, which he used as a springboard for both color and form. Born on September 28, 1902 in Yokohama, Japan, he was interested in art from a young age. The artist studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and later with Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita in Paris-exhibiting in the 1927 Salon d'Automne while he was there. After returning to Japan, Okada continued using an Impressionist style to paint landscapes. It was not until he moved to New York in 1950 and became acquainted with Clyfford Still and Mark Rothko that he produced his abstract works. Okada died on July 25, 1982 in Tokyo, Japan. His works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among other.

        Est: $5,000 - $8,000

This lot features an original oil and collage on canvas abstract painting by Kenzo Okada (Kenzo Akada) (Japanese-American 1902 - 1982). Kenzo was the first Japanese-American artist to work in the abstract expressionist style and receive international acclaim. A realist painter in Japan, in 1950 he moved to New York City, where he produced abstract paintings. Undoubtedly stimulated by abstract expressionism, these paintings nevertheless display a strong Japanese sensibility and feeling for form. In 1953, he began to exhibit his abstract expressionist paintings with the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York City, and through Parsons, gained access to the inner circle of Abstract Expressionism. His paintings from the 1950s and 1960s reveal subtle changes in the natural world through the use of imagery constructed with delicate, sensitive color tonalities, floating within the compositional space. Okada evokes the aura of landscape by using earth colors, abstract patterns hinting at rocks and flowers, and an overall haziness that makes his scenes look submerged in water. Bringing an Asian sensitivity to the New York School of abstraction, Okada distills the essence of nature into his painting, making it seem elemental and thus sublime. Okada became friends with Mark Rothko and many other abstract expressionists, especially the early color field painters. His sensitive and personal style of abstract expressionism, with his Asian roots, relates directly to both color field painting and lyrical abstraction. Signed "Kenzo Akada" lower right register. Measures 26" x 26". This piece comes from the Dickenson Estate of Knoxville, Tennessee. See Photos for Details. Shipping Available.
