  • Uche Okeke "The Bonsue Dancer" Linocut
    Sep. 30, 2026

Uche Okeke "The Bonsue Dancer" Linocut

    Est: $600 - $1,200

No visible signature.  Date: 1960   Image: 3 1/4" x 6 3/4"  Frame: 9" x 12 1/2"    Provenance: From the private collection of Dr. Joanne B. Eicher, a personal friend of Uche Okeke and his family. The Eicher family also gave Okeke's 1961 oil painting "Ana Mmuo (Land of the Dead)" to the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art (97-3-1), gift of Joanne B. Eicher and Cynthia, Carolyn Ngozi, and Diana Eicher.   Condition: Minor undulation to the paper. The area on the left side of the print has spots of missing ink, likely from the printing process. Marks and wear to the frame.    Artist Bio: Uche Okeke (1933–2016) was a founding member and second president of the Zaria Art Society — the "Zaria Rebels" — and in 1960, the year of Nigerian independence, articulated Natural Synthesis: a fusion of indigenous Nigerian visual traditions with what was worth keeping from Western art, rather than imitation of either. His source was uli, the Igbo drawing tradition practiced by women on the body and on house walls, learned from his mother — sinuous springing line, asymmetry, and a sparse figure-ground where the empty interval carries as much weight as the mark. He internalized it as a linear process rather than a set of motifs, which is why he worked naturally in pen and ink, linocut and woodcut. He headed the art department at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, from 1971 to 1983, building what became known as the uli school. Linocut suited him for the same reason — it privileges line and stark black-and-white contrast — and it runs right through his output, including the graphic work he made during the Nigeria–Biafra war.

Pen and ink is the medium he worked in most continuously; expect economical, springing uli-derived line, minimal modelling and generous negative space.

  • Uche Okeke,  Nigerian 1933-2016 -  Mural for the Children's Library in Enugu, c.1964; oil on panel
    Mar. 25, 2025

Uche Okeke,  Nigerian 1933-2016 -  Mural for the Children's Library in Enugu, c.1964; oil on panel

    Est: £300 - £500

Uche Okeke,  Nigerian 1933-2016 -  Mural for the Children's Library in Enugu, c.1964; oil on panel, three parts, 122 x 452.7 cm (overall), 122 x 101 cm (left), 122 x 244.2 cm (middle), 122 x 107.5 cm (right) Note: a copy of a certificate from the The Asele Institute, Nimo, Anambra State, Nigeria, established by Okeke in 1958, accompanies this lot.  Provenance: the Family of the Artist, acquired from the Enugu State Library Board Note: a pioneering figure in modern African art, Uche Okeke was a co-founder of the Zaria Art Society in 1958, in which he created his own visual language called Natural Synthesis—a fusion of indigenous Nigerian aesthetics with the European style techniques being taught by most of the professors at the the Nigerian College in early stages of British colonialism. He sought to create art that both reflected local aesthetics and represent African Modernism. This monumental painting is a striking example of his mastery of his new visual language of European expressionism and post-Impressionism with traditional flowing, calligraphic lines and symbolic motifs rooted in uli, the traditional Igbo art form of line making, often murals. This work was created for the children's section in the East Central State Library in Enugu, Nigeria, which was founded by UNESCO in 1958. Through striking colours and dynamic linework, Okeke weaves a visual narrative rich in cultural heritage, yet delightful enough to captivate the children within its walls. Okeke held many teaching positions over his career, including Head of the Fine Arts department at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, from 1971 to 1985. He cultivated many students, including El Anatsui. Okeke's works have been widely exhibited and are held in major collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, National Gallery of Modern Art, Lagos, and the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington, DC.
