Claes Oldenburg Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, Painter, Illustrator, b. 1929 - d. 2022

(born 28 January 1929 Stockholm, Sweden) American artist. Son of a diplomat, Claes Thure Oldenburg moved to various places as a child before his family finally settled in Chicago in 1936. He attended Yale University from 1946 to 1950 and went on to study art at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1950 to 1954. He opened a studio in 1953 and became a United States citizen that same year. In 1956 he moved to New York City where he met other artists including George Brecht, Allan Kaprow, and George Segal. Oldenburg had his first one-man exhibit in 1959 at the Judson Gallery and at Cooper Union. At the time he was working on drawings, collages, and sculptures made out of papier-mâché. In 1961 Oldenburg started creating some of his most well known works out of plaster and enamel, including Two Cheeseburgers, with Everything. The same year he opened The Store in his studio, in which he created exaggerated models of common store items. This commentary on America’s consumer culture helped label him as a pop artist by 1962. At the same time Oldenburg started participating in performance art, most notably the Happenings with other artists such as Jim Dine, Red Grooms, and Robert Whitman. An active year for Oldenburg, in 1962 he also began recreating commonplace objects such as a toilet or light switch but altered its size and texture, thus turning convention on its head and presenting the everyday in a whole new perspective. In 1967 he created his first public monument, the short-lived performance piece Placid Civil Monument, in Central Park. Oldenburg continues to create public monuments in the form of permanent large-scale projects, including Clothespin (1976) and Knife Ship (1985) alongside fellow artist and wife Coosje van Bruggen, whom he married in 1977. He had a solo exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1969 and in 1995 the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Guggenheim Museum in New York held a retrospective of his work. He lives in New York.

                    Est: $800 - $1,600

Claes Oldenburg (Swedish/American, 1929-2022). Lithograph on paper titled "Balloons" depicting three balloons in varying states of inflation, one red, one yellow, and one blue. Pencil signed along the lower right, numbered 20/30 along the lower left. Published by Landfall Press Inc., Chicago, ca. 2000. Stamped with publisher's stamp along the verso. Provenance: Private Minnesota Collection. Lot Essay: Claes Oldenburg was born in Stockholm but spent his early years in Chicago. In his mid-twenties, he moved to New York where he began experimenting with soft sculptural forms before moving into works that incorporated chicken wire, everyday objects, and food items. He began participating in the early years of the Pop Art movement, meeting Jim Dine, Red Grooms, Allan Kaprow, and Robert Beauchamp. From the early 1970s and onwards he would focus almost exclusively on public commissions, creating works for Oberlin College, the Kroller-Muller Museum, the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, the city of Cleveland, and many others. He began collaborating at this time with Coosje van Bruggen and they were married in 1977. From 1981 he began signing works with his name and van Bruggen's. He is perhaps best known for his large sculptural installations featuring everyday objects, many of which were made in collaboration with his wife, Coosje van Bruggen. The duo is well-known in Minnesota for their iconic "Spoonbridge and Cherry" sculpture and fountain in the Walker Sculpture Garden in Minneapolis. The sculpture depicts a large spoon extending over and dipping into a body of water. At the tip of the spoon is precariously perched a bright red cherry. Since its installation in 1988, the artwork has become a symbol of the Twin Cities, appearing often in artwork, promotional material, and other depictions of the cities.

Claes Oldenburg (1929-2022) Multi Media, Geometric Mouse - Scale D, 1971

                    Est: $300 - $500

Claes Oldenburg (1929-2022) Multi Media, Geometric Mouse - Scale D, 1971. Whisker B flap is torn off. Some discoloration. Approx: 19.75 in H x 16.5 in W. Weight: 1 lb. The Geometric Mouse, sometimes termed the Analytical Mouse, was the most abstract of all the motifs in the Walker exhibition. Its basic form is two large circles attached to a rectangle, but it came to resemble many different things, having connections to objects in other categories. For example, its eyes might be seen as a reiteration of the vertical slots in Three-Way Plug, itself suggesting a face. The mouse is more symbolic than many of Oldenburg's motifs, which tend to represent functional objects, sometimes associated with past times. Unlike the other motifs in the Walker show, so rooted in quaint domesticity, objects around the house, the office and the playground, the mouse had an independent, complex relationship to Oldenburg's other imagery. Its earliest appearance, as just a head, took the form of a large soft mask worn by participants in a 1965 Oldenburg performance titled Moveyhouse.
