Ein praktisches Handbuch zum Gebrauch bei der Besichtigung derselben, Berlin 1856, p. 393, no. 32 (as Jan van Osten) We are grateful to Ursula Härting for confirming the attribution after examining the present painting in the original. Her written communication, dated 18 March 2026 accompanies this lot. The present painting represents the Fall of Man set within an expansive and meticulously observed landscape populated by a variety of animals rendered with precision and charm. Among the many details is a group of three woodpeckers perched in a tree, characteristic of the artist's careful attention to naturalistic observation. A distinctive iconographic feature of the composition is the portrayal of Eve reaching with her right hand towards the forbidden fruit while simultaneously offering another apple to the reclining figure of Adam. This particular arrangement of the couple, together with the animated treatment of the surrounding fauna, finds close parallels in a signed work conserved in the Liechtenstein Princely Collections, Vienna (inv. no. GE 7549). Ursula Härting has dated the present work to the later phase of the artist's career, a period for which no securely dated paintings are known. Although documentary evidence relating to the painter remains scarce, van Oosten's oeuvre consists predominantly of small-scale cabinet pictures produced in accordance with the refined collecting tastes of seventeenth-century Flanders. His works are especially distinguished by their lively and detailed depictions of animals within wooded landscapes, which reveal a clear affinity with the tradition established by Jan Brueghel II.

Signed lower left (on the wheelbarrow): I. v. Oosten fecit The Flemish landscape painter Izaak van Oosten is thought to have been born in Antwerp as the son of an art dealer. Perhaps he was initially also active in the art trade, as he only joined the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1651/52, at the age of 39. In addition to panel paintings, van Oosten also created smaller views to decorate Antwerp art cabinets. His œuvre consists primarily of landscapes that reflect the influence of Jan Brueghel the Elder and Jan Brueghel the Younger. In contrast to these artists, who often used the support of specialised figure painters for the people in their paintings, Izaak van Oosten often painted his figures himself. For the present painting he chose an episode from Ovid's Metamorphoses as his subject: Vertumnus, the Roman god of the seasons, initially unsuccessfully attempts to woo Pomona, the goddess of fruit and garden crops. Only when he, disguised as an old woman, manages to dissuade her from her chaste life devoted to gardening, does he win her favour. This subject was ideally suited for van Oosten, who often embedded his depictions of figures in spacious, idyllic park landscapes. In the background of this work, an extensive park with a geometric water feature, exactly aligned avenues of trees and trimmed hedges stretches out behind the protagonists. In the foreground, fruits and vegetables are spread out like a still life, with a monkey and two guinea pigs feasting on them.

LANDSCHAFT MIT JÄGERN UND EINEM DORF Öl auf Holz. 49 x 64,5 cm. Verso Prägestempel der Antwerpener Gilde. Im Zentrum des Gemäldes ein großer alter, weit verzweigter, bis in den Himmel reichender Baum, auf einem größeren Felsenstück wachsend, auf dessen linker Seite ein Weg in den Wald führt, auf dem ein Jäger mit Hund und zwei ihm entgegenkommende Reiter zu erkennen sind. Nach rechts, zu einer flacheren Ebene führend, ein Dorf mit alten, teils Reetdach gedeckten Häusern, in dessen Mitte ein kleiner Bachlauf zu erkennen ist, ebenso wie einige Figuren, unter hohem hellblauen Himmel mit gelblichen Lichtstreifen der wohl untergehenden Sonne. Anmerkung: Der Künstler war ein in Antwerpen tätiger flämischer Barock- und Landschaftsmaler. Im Alter von 39 Jahren wurde er 1652 Meister in der Antwerpener Lukasgilde. Er wurde stark von anderen Antwerpener Landschaftsmalern beeinflusst, insbesondere von Jan Brueghel d. Ä. LANDSCHAFT MIT WEINBERGEN UND FIGUREN Öl auf Kupferplatte, parkettiert. 33 x 45 cm. Links unten bezeichnet „J. V. Oosten fecit“. Das vorliegende Werk in verschiedenen, meist keilartigen Ebenen aufgebaut: Die erste Ebene erstreckt sich vom rechten unteren Rand bis in die Mitte des linken Randes, darin zu sehen eine überdachte Werkstatt, in der zwei Männer eine große hölzerne Traubenpresse bedienen, die von einem vor Körben und einem Bottich stehenden Paar befüllt wird. Im Vordergrund links ein Mann, der die zu befüllenden Holzfässer herrichtet. Nach links geht der Blick auf einen Felsen, auf dem eine Gebäudeanlage mit Rundturm steht und zu dem eine steile Treppe hinaufführt. Im Vordergrund der Mitte ein elegant gekleideter Kavallier auf einem Schimmel, wohl der Besitzer des Gutes und der Weinberge, der sich bei einem älteren Herren nach dem Vorrankommen der Weinlese erkundigt. Diese Ebene überwiegend in beige-brauner Farbigkeit wiedergegeben, aufgelockert durch rötliche und blaue Kleidungsstücke der dargestellten Figuren. Nach rechts geht ein Weg ins Tal hinunter und es folgt die zweite Ebene, die sich wie ein ins Bild ragender Keil gestaltet, auf dem zunächst ein stufenartig gestalteter beige-grüner Berg zu erkennen ist, mit diversen Häusern und zahlreichen Weinstöcken. Eine Stadt leitet den Blick über in ein hohes blau-weißes Gebirge. Darüber der hohe hellblaue Himmel mit großen weißen Wolkenformationen und einigen fliegenden Vögeln. In der Mitte des Bildes ein hoher, bis zum Himmel reichender, teils dürrer Baum, der alle Ebenen malerisch miteinander verbindet. Malerei in der typischen Manier des bekannten Künstlers mit vielen Details. Auf moderne Holzplatte aufgeleimt. 44 x 64 cm.Das Gemälde insgesamt eine Berufsdarstellung des Schäferwesens, hier mehrfigurig und illustrativ vorgestellt. Im Vordergrund, am unteren Bildrand, ein Wasserlauf, in dem zwei Männer dabei sind, Schafe zu waschen, dahinter ein weiter Anger mit einem Ziehbrunnen, umgeben von einer größeren Schafherde, die nach links zum Scheren getrieben wird. Am rechten Bildrand ein Pferdegespann, das offensichtlich die geschorene Wolle transportiert, vor einem reetgedeckten Gebäude. Im Hintergrund freies Ackerfeld, hell beleuchtet. Baumgruppen in der Ferne, die bereits in blaue Luftperspektive getaucht sind. Der Maler wurde 1617 in die Lukasgilde in Antwerpen aufgenommen, er arbeitete öfter zusammen mit Willem van Herp (1614-1677), zuweilen auch mit Peeter van Avont (1600-1652) oder Jan van Kessel d. Ä. Gemäldepaar SCHLOSSPARKALLEE MIT BRUNNEN UND HÖFISCHER PERSONENSTAFFAGE sowie SCHLOSSTREPPE VOR GARTENANLAGEN MIT HOFGESELLSCHAFT Je Öl auf Leinwand, auf Platte. 59 x 55 cm. Die beiden Bilder sind zweifellos als Gegenstücke gemalt worden, zumindest einem Zyklus zuzurechnen. Bei gleicher Grundthematik wird hier ein idealisierter Blick auf das Hofleben geboten. In beiden Bildern herrscht eine angenehme Ruhe. Die Personen vergnügen sich in der Parkallee mit Musik, wobei ein Lautenspieler an einem Springbrunnen spielt, während ein höfisches Paar im Gespräch gezeigt wird und ein Diener aus einem Mauertor mit Speisen herantritt. Im Gegenstück schreitet ein höfisches Paar die Schlosstreppe herab, während zwei Damen in Sesseln mit hohen Lehnen von festlicher Gesellschaft umgeben sind. Dahinter ein Barockgarten mit kunstvoll angelegten Beeten, Brunnen und Steinfiguren. Der Maler wurde 1617 Mitglied der Sankt Lukasgilde, war stark beeinflusst von Antwerpener Landschaftern, wie Jan Brueghel und stand in Verbindung mit seinen Zeitgenossen, wie Lucas van Uden, Jan Wildens oder Brueghel d.J. Unter seinen Landschaften sind Schlossparkansichten jedoch eher eine Ausnahme. Bilder seiner Hand finden sich in zahlreichen privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen. (1251704) (1) (11)

Oil/wood, 34 x 46 cm. - The castle in the center and the domed church behind it suggest that the artist is meeting the demand for views of Rome with Castel Sant'Angelo and St. Peter's without having actually seen the city. On depictions of the late 17th century Castel Sant'Angelo is shown with a high central structure and a huge flag pole. - Provenance: Private collection Lower Saxony. - Flemish landscape painter. Nothing is known about the artists early life. Possibly he worked for his father's art gallery in Antwerpen. Only in 1652 O. joined the St. Luke's guild. CertificateKlaus Ertz, Lingen, 22.7.2016.Little documentary evidence has survived to provide information on the life and training of the Flemish landscape painter Izaak van Oosten. We know that he was born in Antwerp, that his father was an art dealer, and that he entered the guild of Saint Luke in this city in 1652 at the comparatively advanced age of 39. He may have worked in his father's art dealership before that. Alongside panel paintings, van Oosten also created small plaques to decorate Antwerp painted cabinets. His oeuvre mainly consists of landscapes inspired by the works of Jan Brueghel the Elder and his son Jan Breughel the Younger. “However, van Oostens works differ from those of the Brueghels in their fine and detailed manner. […] a further significant difference to the Brueghels is that van Oosten was also fully capable of painting the slightly squat and rounded figures that populate his landscapes himself” (cited from Klaus Ertz' expertise, which is included with this lot). Like so often in van Oosten's works, he chooses an idyllic panoramic park landscape, here with an elegant pavilion as a “point de vu”, as the setting for his Old Testament scene. The story is told in the book of Daniel, and relates how two respected judges espied Susanna, the wife of a wealthy man, bathing in her garden. “And the two elders saw her going in every day, and walking; so that their lust was inflamed toward her. And they perverted their own mind, and turned away their eyes, that they might not look unto heaven, nor remember just judgments” (Dan. 13:8-9). The elders hid in the garden, surprised Susanna, and propositioned her. When she refused their advances, the two falsely accused her of adultery in revenge, and it was only through the wisdom of the prophet Daniel that Susanna's innocence, and the guilt of the two judges, was revealed. This motif was particularly popular with many artists, not only van Oosten, as it provided a discreet and graceful opportunity to depict an attractive female nude.
