MAX OPPENHEIMER: GEIGEN, HÄNDE UND NOTEN

Max Oppenheimer Geigen, Hände und Noten c. 1949 oil on canvas; framed 40.5 x 81.5 cm monogrammed on the lower right: MOPP private property, Vienna; private property, Austria Marie-Agnes von Puttkamer, Max Oppenheimer. Leben und malerisches Werk, Vienna 1999, p. 288, cat. no. 285 (b/w-ill.); Hans Peter Wipplinger (ed.), Max Oppenheimer. Expressionist der ersten Stunde. exhibition catalogue Leopold Museum, Vienna 2023, ill. p. 241 In Max Oppenheimer’s work, the tempo and dynamics of music are palpable. The act of making music is intensively experienced. In this work, Oppenheimer borrows from Cubism and Futurism, creating a unique composition with his distinctive touch. Besides portraits and still lifes, in which Oppenheimer incorporated stylistic ideas drawn from the New Objectivity, Cubism, Futurism and Dadaism, he was particularly interested in depicting music and its protagonists. He had received violin lessons back in early childhood and throughout his life also engaged artistically with the theme of music and, above all, the theme of stringed instruments, which he explored in many different variations and techniques. The joint Hagenbund Exhibition in Vienna in 1924, at which his monumental orchestra scenes in oil were presented to great acclaim, marked a high point in this regard. Taking as one’s starting point the 1914 painting Hess-Quartett (Puttkamer 1999, cat.-no. 93, p. 242), which still includes the musicians in the composition, there is an intensification of the form of the motif just one year later; in the exhibition poster for the Kunstsalon Wolfsberg, Oppenheimer for the first time focuses exclusively on the musical instruments, the hands of the string players and the music books, intentionally omitting any depiction of the people. Borrowing from Cubist and Futurist compositional devices, the motifs are depicted interlocked in such a way that the laws of perspective are completely suspended. In this version, too, Oppenheimer intentionally does not show the heads of the musicians but concentrates entirely on the three instruments – two violins and a piano, the music books and the arrangement of the four hands. In doing so, Oppenheimer takes pains to depict the precise positions of the individual fingers. In the famous colour lithographs of the Rosé Quartett, he intensifies the focus on the hands still further by painting them – in a style reminiscent of Schiele’s lean figures – in an exaggeratedly sinewy and highly detailed manner, with heavily emphasised knuckles, to a much greater extent than seen here. The music sheets seem to flutter through the room; in the case of the hands and instruments, the viewer cannot be sure whether they are looking at two musicians sitting close together or just one, whose breathtakingly rapid movements are depicted using multiple parallel images, as in Futurist works. Important representative of the Austrian avant-garde. 1900 to 1903 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, 1903 to 1906 at the Prague Academy of Arts. 1906 Member of the Prague group OSMA (The Eight), including representatives of the Czech avant-garde such as Otakar Kubín, Emil Filla, Bohumil Kubišta and Emil Artur Longen, among others. In 1908 and 1909 participated in the Vienna Art Show. Early influences of Vincent van Gogh, counted among the Viennese Expressionists around Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and Albert Paris Gütersloh. 1911 to 1915 in Berlin, involvement with Cubism and collaboration on the journal Die Aktion. 1915 to 1925 in Switzerland, beginning his exploration of music. End of the 1920s in Berlin and from 1931 again in Vienna. 1932 emigration via Switzerland to the USA. In 1937 his works were classified by the Nazis as degenerate art. Created mainly portraits, religious depictions and scenes from everyday life. Numerous expressionist works with influences from Cubism and Futurism on the theme of music, impressive depictions of orchestras, composers and conductors. Focus on the visual representation of music interplay of musicians' hands, sheet music and instruments such as the famous violins from the Amati family of violin makers from Cremona. The idea of making music the subject of fine arts results from the rise of music in the 19th century in the competition between artistic genres, the "paragone", which has been held since the Baroque era. The "ut pictura poesis" ("like painting, like poetry"), which goes back to Horace's "ars poetica", was replaced by the emphasis on the close connection between painting and music: "ut pictura musica". Max Oppenheimer, a gifted painter and graphic artist and one of the most important proponents of early expressionism in Austria along with Schiele and Kokoschka, was also a passionate musician. Not only did he have an extraordinary musical education, he also played the violin very well. He owned two valuable violins, a Vuillamue and one of the earliest Amatis from 1606. During his time in Switzerland from 1915 to 1925 he began to artistically deal with the subject of music, incorporating stylistic devices of Futurism and Cubism. Oppenheimer dealt with the Rosé Quartet several times and created the monumental oil painting "The Symphony" in 1923, which shows the Vienna Philharmonic under Gustav Mahler's baton and can be admired in the Belvedere. The Rosé Quartet, one of the most important ensembles of the early 20th century, was founded in Vienna in 1882 by the brothers Eduard and Arnold Rosé and gave its last concert in 1945 in exile in London. As a sensitive observer, Oppenheimer describes the devotion of the Rosé Quartet in the following words: "As soon as the first chords sounded, I found myself in front of other people. Their heads bowed and seemed to be listening inward.” Oppenheimer's works impress with their high quality of technical and artistic execution. Above all, he always succeeds in depicting movement in a two-dimensional still image and in translating the acoustic into the visual. 12 years later, the lithograph of “Amati” was created as a companion piece that was submitted later, whereby Oppenheimer had already realized the motif in 1918 as an oil painting and in 1924 as a lithograph for a Hagenbund poster. His favorite violin from the Cremonese workshop is presented to us twice, from different perspectives and again disregarding the conventional space-time structure. Both hands of the anonymous musician, probably identical to Oppenheimer's again, can also be seen twice each. Once the right bows the strings, once she plays pizzicato. The dynamics in "Rosé-Quartett" and in "Die Amati" are real and immediate: the hands making the music and the instruments are in motion just as violently as the sheet music. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° in the catalog), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax of 13% is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. Est: €3,000 - €4,000

MAX OPPENHEIMER (Vienna, 1885 - New York, 1954). "Dentist". Ink drawing on paper. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 45 x 34.5 cm; 63 x 53 cm (frame). The line of this drawing maintains a certain tremor that reflects a dynamic and highly expressive line, similar to that of his famous friend Egon Schiele. The work reflects a figure, whom we cannot identify, who is being intervened by hands. The gesture indicates to the viewer that it is a dentist and his patient, but in no case does the artist pay attention to who these people are, but rather to the gesture and the action, to a specific moment that defines the movement and gesture of the human will. Oppenheimer, also known under the pseudonym Mopp, was born in Vienna on 1 July 1885. A renowned painter and printmaker, he studied painting in Vienna and Prague from 1900 to 1906. In 1908 and 1909 he took part in the Kunstschau exhibitions of contemporary art, organised by Gustav Klimt and others in Vienna. He shared a studio with Egon Schiele in 1910. In 1912 he moved to Berlin and by then was signing works "MOPP". He contributed many drawings to Franz Pfemfert's left-wing newspaper Die Aktion. Early works consisted mainly of nervous, energetic portraits of the Austrian and German literary and cultural elite; after 1914, the depiction of music became his main subject, presented in a style increasingly influenced by Cubism and Futurism. Declared medically unfit for military service. In the spring of 1915 he settled in Switzerland, where he resided until the 1920s; he returned to Berlin, then to Vienna in the 1930s; he produced approximately one hundred prints. The first lithograph, a poster made in 1911 for his exhibition at the Galerie Thannhauser in Munich, was banned by the police for indecency and was accused of plagiarism by Oskar Kokoschka. The relationship later soured with the critic Arthur Roessler, formerly his most important patron. In 1912 he took up printmaking, which became his preferred medium; he used it for finely detailed portraits and musical scenes. Homosexual and Jewish, he faced persecution by the Nazis, who removed his works from German museums in 1937. He emigrated to New York, via Switzerland, in 1938.

      • MAX OPPENHEIMER 1885 - 1954 - PORTRAIT OF ANTON DVOŘÁK
        Jun. 17, 2021

MAX OPPENHEIMER 1885 - 1954 - PORTRAIT OF ANTON DVOŘÁK

        Est: -

Portrait of engineer and architect Anton Dvořák by Max Oppenheimer, Austrian painter and graphic artist. Together with Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, he is considered a key figure in the Austrian avant-garde. His early work mostly presents portraits of cultural and literary elite personalities and is characterized by striking to nervous strokes, which he will later transform into his cubist and futuristic compositions. As a man-oriented Jew, Max Oppenheimer suffered harsh persecutions by the Nazis, who purged Germany in 1937 and removed his paintings from galleries as perverted art. In 1938, Max Oppenheimer fled to New York via Switzerland. The presented work is published in a book by Marie-Agnes von Puttkamer: Max Oppenheimer - MOPP under catalog number 23. Technique: Oil on cardboard, Signed: Unsigned
