Animal painter, b. 1858 - d. 1928

Artist Edmund Osthaus was born in Germany and formally studied painting there before emigrating to Ohio in 1883. Greatly influenced by his mentor Christian Kroener, a well-known animal painter, Osthaus dedicated himself to painting portraits of pedigreed hunting dogs. After relocating to the United States, Osthaus headed a fine arts academy but devoted himself to his paintings full time after it closed.

Paintings by Edmund Osthaus reflect his lifetime sporting pursuits. In addition to his canine portraits, Edmund Osthaus' prints also realistically depict landscape scenes of ranching or hunting featuring dogs in the field. As a versatile artist, Edmund Osthaus worked in oils, watercolors, pencil, and pen. He passed away at his quail hunting lodge in Florida at the age of 70. Provenance: Kennedy Galleries, New York, New York Edmund Henry Osthaus. 1858 Hildesheim, Germany - 1928 Marianna, Florida. Known for: Hunting dogs, genre-huntsmen, landscape. Born in Hildesheim, Germany, Edmund Osthaus studied at the Royal Academy of Arts between 1874 and 1882. There in Dusseldorf he was instructed by noted artists Andreas Muller, Peter Jansen, E.V. Gebhardt, E. Deger and later by Christian Kroner a wildlife painter and landscapist. Osthaus immigrated to the United States in 1883 to be with his parents in Ohio. He eventually became the chief instructor of the Toledo Academy of Fine Arts, and later the director of the Academy between 1886 and 1893. After he resigned, Osthaus devoted his time to shooting and painting for his own fulfillment. Osthaus knew dogs comprehensively and participated in field trials and confirmation shows with his own setters and pointers. Furthermore, he judged trials and was a charter member of the National Field Trial Association formed in Newton, North Carolina in 1895. His immersion in the world of competitive gun dogs provided abundant subject matter. True to his classical art education, Osthaus executed detailed and life-like portraits of dogs in the field at work, and at play and rest. His mediums were watercolor, oil and pencil. Many of his paintings included field trial champion pointers and setters. Generally he executed compositions of one, two or three dogs and on occasion more, working from life. His paintings are captivating and pull viewers into the composition - one can easily imagine his dogs running afield and moments of suspense from the hunt. Osthaus painted setters which display a traditional sitting position. Setters were derived from medieval hunting dogs that were trained to find birds and then to "set" (crouch or lie down) so that a net could be thrown over both the birds and dog. As firearms came into use, setters were trained to adopt a more upright stance. Over time, training elevated the tail of setters and pointers to an upright position. The artist's paintings came into great demand in the late 1890's. Wealthy families and collectors, such as the Vanderbilts and Morgans, became patrons commissioning large scenes for their lavish homes. Also, Osthaus furthered his reputation with a series of postcards, prints, and calendar pictures done for the DuPont Company. Osthaus established a studio in Los Angeles, California in 1911 and stayed there for the remainder of his life. However, he traveled frequently, painting throughout the States. He maintained homes in Ohio and New Jersey, and wintered on his hunting property in Marianna, Florida. On January 30, 1928, at the age of seventy, Osthaus passed away while at his Florida lodge. Today he is best known for having chronicled the American field dog and producing a sizable body of scenes of gun dogs at work of exceptional quality.

    Property of a Private Collector, Bluffton, SC Description: Edmund Osthaus (Germany/OH, 1858 - 1928), Landscape, Watercolor, initial signed lower right, fence along a river, matted and framed. Frame size: 20 1/2 in. x 25 1/2 in. Edmund Osthaus was a German-American painter and sportsman, known for his paintings of dogs and hunting genre scenes. Osthaus trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dusseldorf before immigrating to the United States. He settled in Ohio with his family and soon became the chief instructor at the Toledo Academy of Fine Arts, he was later named the director. He later established a studio in Los Angeles. His work is held by the Toledo Museum of Art and is collected by hunters and sportsmen around the world. Measurements: Height: 24 1/2 in. x Width: 19 1/2 in. Condition: Good condition, faded, not viewed out of frame. Lot Essay Hunting-and-sporting-dog artist Edmund Henry Osthaus is renowned for his anatomically accurate and highly detailed depictions of field dogs in action, as in the present work, Pointer with Quail (1890). With its short, coarse coat, white-and-liver coloring and sleek, strong body, the dog stands at attention, gripping the day’s spoils in its mouth. The landscape that surrounds the dog—rendered in a late-autumn palette of camel-brown and copper—is also superbly treated, and is a testament to Osthaus’s firsthand experience in the field. An avid shooter and outdoorsman, the artist possessed an intimate knowledge of American hunting and sporting dogs and their environment. By the turn of the 20th century, Osthaus’s images had earned him widespread acclaim. Writing in 1907, the pinnacle of the artist’s career, critic Charles Wisner Barrell concluded that “[the] dog...has found among painters very few truthful delineators. Many artists have essayed to paint dogs occasionally...but nearly always they have used the animals as foils for the accentuation of human characteristics, or as appropriate figures in landscapes, or they have boldly twisted canine attributes into all but human caricatures...Up to the present time, perhaps the only painter who has earnestly and successfully sought to realize this...unidealized delineation of canine types is the German-American artist of Toledo, Ohio, Edmund H. Osthaus.” In addition to his technical prowess, Osthaus's paintings also reveal a richness that transcends mere representation. The artist skillfully conveys the nobility and loyalty inherent in these hunting dogs, elevating his works beyond genre scenes to pointed reflections on the human-animal bond. Osthaus's ability to capture the essence of sporting culture is on full display in Pointer with Quail, memorializing man's partnership with his four-legged hunting companions.

    Framed litho with attached brass plaque "DUPONT 1908 TROPHY / WON BY / J.P. Carr", also marked LLC "TONY'S GALE / BY ANTONIO-NELLIE G. / 1898". Litho measures 16" x 21 1/2", matted and framed to 27 1/2" x 33 1/2". Artist marked EDMUND HENRY OSTHAUS (1858-1928) One of America's greatest sporting-dog artists. Osthaus was appointed head instructor at the Toledo Academy of Fine Arts in 1886. "Osthaus was at the height of his fame in the late 1890s and early 1900s. During this time he began a famous series of portraits of the National Field Trial Championship winners. Osthaus painted every winning dog from 1896 through 1910. The series included some of the most famous bird dogs in the nation's history such as Count Gladstone. These portraits and other Osthaus works were picked up by the DuPont Powder Company, which published them on postcards and calendars to advertise the company's smokeless gunpowder. The DuPont series establshed Osthaus' fame among the general public during his lifetime. At the time he was collected by many of America's wealthiest families and by some of the most prominent sportsmen of his day including the Vanderbilt's, Morgan's, Hobart Ames of Boston, Pierre Lorillard of New York and Harry Edwards of Cleveland. Not examined outside of frame but appears to be in superb condition.
