Frederick Little Packer original pen and ink political cartoon titled "Fit to Be Tied," addressing the political unrest in Cyprus and French North Africa during the 1950s. The composition depicts personifications of Britain and France discussing their troubles while two armed, unruly figures labeled "Cyprus" and "French North Africa" appear in the foreground. Dialogue reads, "Just the other day he bit me!" and "And I'm all black and blue!" Signed "Packer" lower right. Title inscribed in pencil along the lower margin. 22" x 15" unframed. Frederick Little Packer (1886-1956, United States) was a prominent American editorial cartoonist whose work appeared in major newspapers including the New York Journal, New York American and New York Daily Mirror. Known for his sharply observed political satire, Packer received the 1952 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning for his cartoon "Your Editors Ought to Have More Sense Than to Print What I Say!" His work frequently addressed American politics, international affairs and the major political figures and conflicts of his era.

Frederick Little Packer original pen and ink political cartoon depicting Joseph Stalin driving a massive Soviet steamroller toward a sign reading "World Dominion," contrasted in the lower scene with Nikita Khrushchev and another Soviet leader riding in a luxury automobile marked "U.S.S.R." toward the same destination. Captioned in pencil, "It's the same road, to same places, but bigger smile on different faces!" Signed "Packer" within the image lower right, with additional handwritten notations along the lower margin. A striking Cold War-era satirical commentary contrasting Stalin-era Soviet expansionism with the leadership that followed. 22" x 15" unframed. Frederick Little Packer (1886-1956, United States) was an American illustrator and prominent editorial cartoonist who studied at the Los Angeles School of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. His career included work for the Los Angeles Examiner, San Francisco Call, New York Journal, New York American, and New York Daily Mirror, where he became an editorial cartoonist. His wartime cartoons and posters earned citations from the U.S. Treasury Department and War Production Board. In 1952, Packer received the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning for his cartoon criticizing President Harry S. Truman, published in the New York Daily Mirror in 1951. His work is represented in institutional collections, including the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.

Condition B+: repaired tears, restored losses, sharp creases, and restoration in margins; minor creases and abrasions in image. Fred Packer graduated from the Chicago Art Institute in 1906, then joined the staff of the Los Angeles Examiner as an artist for the Sunday supplements. He worked as a commercial artist on book and magazine illustrations until 1931, after which he became a cartoonist for publications such as the New York Journal, the New York American, and the Daily Mirror. Packer received a Pulitzer prize in 1952 for his political cartoon criticizing President Truman.

He died December 8, 1956.His cartoons and posters for the World War II defense effort earned him citations from the Treasury Deptatment and the War Production Board. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize on May 5, l952 for his Truman Cartoon, "Your Editors ought to have more sense than to print what I say", which appeared in the "New York Mirror" of October 6, 1951. In August 1953, he was invited by the Library of Congress to make a gift of his original drawings to its permanent collection.
