Provenienz: Privatsammlung Berlin. - Ursprünglich in Berlin zum Juristen ausgebildet, gab Paeffgen seinen Beruf auf, um sich ab 1970 ganz der Kunst zu widmen. Dabei bereicherte der Kölner mit seinen innovativen Einfällen die deutsche Kunstlandschaft um ein Vielfaches. Ganz nach dem Motto "alles ist darstellungswürdig, alles kann Kunst sein" erachtete der Autodidakt alltägliche Motive als "kunstwürdiges Material" für seine Arbeiten (Evelin Seelig, in: C. O. Paeffgen. Aus der Sammlung Großhaus. Schleswig, Schloss Gottorf u.a., 2010, S. 17). - In seiner Anfangsphase Ende der 1960er Jahre entstanden die sogenannten "Umwicklungen", mit Draht zusammengebundene und umschnürte Fundobjekte, aus denen Paeffgen neue Gebilde formte. Dieses Gestaltungsprinzip der "Umwicklung" übertrug er 1970, nach seiner Rückkehr nach Köln, dann auf die Malerei. So entstand eine zweite, ganz zentrale Werkgruppe, die "Umrandungen", zu der auch das vorliegende Gemälde "Halbakt" zählt. - Paeffgen bediente sich vornehmlich der Bilderflut der Massenmedien, indem er Fotografien von scheinbar willkürlich ausgewählten Gegenständen, Politikern, Stars, aber auch unbekannten Menschen vergrößerte und deren Konturen in dicken, schwarzen Linien nachzog. Die daraus resultierende vollkommen flächige Bildanlage vereinfacht die ursprüngliche Darstellung comicartig und weckt so Assoziationen an die amerikanische Pop-Art. Dazu brachte Paeffgen die Vorlage zunächst mittels eines Druckverfahrens auf die Leinwand und bemalte diese anschließend mit breiten Pinselstrichen. Dabei unterschied er nur zwischen der Kontur und den durch diese geformten Binnenflächen, die er mit einzelnen Farbtönen füllte. Damit einher ging eine inhaltliche Verfremdung der Darstellung: "Bei seinen legendären 'Umrandungen' greift er zum Filzstift und markiert die Konturen auf Zeitungsfotografien und Massenprintmedien. Die Ereignisse, von denen die Artikel berichten, unterbricht er und zerstört ihren eigentlichen Bildzusammenhang. Den dergestalt aus ihrem ursprünglichen Kontext subtrahierten Protagonisten verleiht er neue, spöttisch entlarvende Zusammenhänge." (Oliver Kornhoff, in: Sehr Schön. C.O. P., acrylic on canvas, 190 x 158 cm, on stretcher Provenance: Galerie Levy Hamburg (label) Sale Van Ham, Cologne, 2 June 2015, lot 213 Private Collection Germany From the 1960s onwards, Claus Otto Paeffgen, a lawyer by training, established his reputation with his partly critical, partly ironical and witty, sometimes pop and occasionally poetic ‘Umwickelungen’ (wrappings) and ‘Umrandungen’ (borderings), which he used to highlight the banality of mass culture. The ‘Umrandungen’, which include the present work, were created by thickly outlining photographs and newspaper clippings that the artist subsequently projected onto canvas.
