(Goan Woman with Sickle), 1952. Ink and gouache on paper, depicting a monumental, multi-limbed female laborer against a deep-blue patterned field with a stylized village house. Signed in Devanagari and signed and dated PAI 52 lower right. Framed and matted. Frame 26W x 31 H Image 18W x 22 3/4
Born in January, 1926 in Margao, Goa, India, Laxman Pai received his earliest art education in India’s Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai. The artist has admitted to having a deep and intense adoration for natural beauty, as this artwork suggests. Pai usually paints with bright and bold colours, drawing greater focus to the image depicted. His canvases are densely populated with nature in all her moods, and his human characters are always depicted in relation with their environment. All of Pai’s art is a reflection of his impressions and it is free from any commentary. Most of his work is based on chance encounters and experiences that have left a mark on his mind be it good or evil. His earlier paintings borrowed generously from ancient Egyptian sculptures with bodies that were portrayed front on with the faces in profile.
LAXMAN PAI (1926-2021), UNTITLED, OIL ON CANVAS, INDIA, DATED 1970 Of square format, the composition is organised around a central heart-shaped or shield-shaped face set against a saturated red-orange ground. The face is bisected vertically, one half rendered in warm ochre and brown, the other in deep green, the division running through an elongated leaf-form nose flanked by two blue circular eyes at its base and terminating in a pair of stylised red lips. Above, a single elongated brow spans the width of the face, surmounted by two almond-shaped eyes with heavy lashes and green lids. A pearled strand descends along the ochre cheek, and a matching row of blue beads follows the contour of the green cheek. A flowering sprig sits on the green half in place of an ear ornament, while a small red bindi-like disc marks the ochre cheek. Rising from the crown is a stylised flame or lotus-bud finial in yellow and orange, its petal-forms curving outward symmetrically. To either side of the face, large volute forms in deep blue unfurl into paired spirals, reading simultaneously as hair, as wings, and as scrollwork. The lower register resolves into a downward-pointing green triangle set with yellow and green roundels, framed by two red discs and enclosed by slender green foliate sprays that echo the vegetal motifs at the sides. Signed in Devanagari and in Roman script "Laxman Pai" at the lower right, dated 70. The image belongs to Pai's mature symbolic vocabulary of the late 1960s and early 1970s, in which the human face, and particularly the female face, is dissolved into an ornamental scheme drawn from Indian folk and ritual sources. The bilateral division of the countenance, the flame at the crown, the enclosing foliate border and the axial symmetry recall the visual logic of the kolam and rangoli, of temple threshold paintings, and of the painted faces of ritual images carried in procession. The single brow, the elongated nose and the beaded ornaments are drawn from the conventions of Rajasthani and Pahari miniature painting, which Pai studied closely after his return from Paris in the early 1960s. Trained at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay and resident in Paris between 1951 and 1961, Laxman Pai returned to India committed to a pictorial language that reconciled the flat, decorative sensibility of European modernism with the ornamental and devotional traditions of the subcontinent. His subsequent tenure as principal of the Goa College of Art, from 1977, coincided with a sustained investigation of Indian musical modes, seasonal cycles and religious iconography as pictorial subjects. Works of the early 1970s such as the present canvas sit at the beginning of this synthesis, where the figure is retained as an armature but wholly subsumed into pattern. The oil medium is handled with the matte, evenly modulated surface characteristic of Pai's canvases of this decade, the pigments laid in broad flat passages with soft tonal transitions at the interior of each colour field rather than at its edges. The palette, dominated by cadmium red, deep phthalo blue, viridian and yellow ochre, is deliberately close to the chromatic register of Indian folk painting and painted votive objects, and marks a decisive move away from the more muted tonalities of his Parisian years. This canvas exemplifies the ornamental phase of Laxman Pai's post-Paris practice, in which the female visage becomes the pretext for a fully symmetrical, quasi-devotional composition. It is a characteristic example of the moment at which Pai's engagement with miniature painting and folk ritual imagery consolidated into a signature idiom, and it belongs to the body of work through which he established his position among the second generation of Indian modernists.
Laxman PAI (India, 1926 - 2021) Blue Mirror, 1964 Oil on canvas 81 x 46 cm Signed and dated at the bottom in Devanagari script and in Latin letters Laxman pai - 64 Countersigned, dated and titled on the back *** Oil on canvas, signed and dated in Devanagari and Latin script, countersigned, dated and titled on the reverse, 31⅞ × 18⅛ in. Painted in 1964. Provenance Private collection inherited by descent, Germany In 1964, Laxman Pai exhibited at the Shridharani Gallery of the Triveni Kala Sangam in New Delhi. Blue Mirror belongs to the pivotal period following his return from Paris in 1961. The female figure, framed by incisive black lines, holds an ornate blue mirror. In the lower left, an eye set in a dark frame evokes both Tantric iconography and a more universally symbolic dimension. The work testifies to Pai's synthesis of the gestural expressionism inherited from his Parisian years and the ornamental repertoire of India. The work's German provenance is in keeping with Pai's long-standing links with Germany, where he exhibited in Munich, Stuttgart, Hanover and Bremen during the 1950s-1960s, and for which he carried out a commission for the Rosenthal factory in the mid-1950s.

"Laxman Pai was born in Goa, an environment of remarkable natural beauty that profoundly influenced his artistic sensibility. He studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay before moving to France in 1951, where he continued his training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris alongside Indian artists Francis Newton Souza and S. H. Raza. Much of Pai's work draws on the Goan landscapes of his childhood. The stylized backgrounds that frequently appear in his paintings echo their colors and atmosphere. Pai participated in the Goa liberation movement and was imprisoned for his political involvement in Gandhi's satyagraha. His figurative style combines elements inspired by Indian miniature with the formal clarity of ancient Egyptian art. During his years in Paris, he studied Egyptian relief sculpture at the Louvre and assimilated the influence of artists such as Paul Klee and Marc Chagall. He combined these references with memories of villagers and rural life in Goa. Works from this period often feature figures whose frontal body and profile recall Egyptian conventions. Pai returned to India in 1961, shortly after Goa's liberation from Portuguese colonial rule. He then headed the Goa College of Art from 1977 to 1987. In April 2018, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian honors in the arts. The two works presented here were created by Laxman Pai during his period in Paris. Laxman PAI (India, 1926 - 2021) Nayikaa, (19)52 Oil on canvas 66 x 56 cm Signed lower right in Nagari script Titled on back "Nayikaa", countersigned and dated Laxman Paï 52 Provenance: Claude B. Collection (1932 - 2021), whose aunt Aline B. housed the artist in Paris in the 1950s. This major work from Laxman Pai's first period, dated 1952, already testifies to the singular strength of his pictorial language. Entitled Nayikaa - the Sanskrit term for heroine, the central female figure in the lyrical and dramatic arts of classical India - the canvas features a hieratic, frontal woman with stylized gestures and a direct gaze. The sharp contours, angular forms and simplified volumes evoke an iconography rooted in ancient statuary and Indian folk art. The figure is treated with monumental frontality, the face in segmented flat tints, the arms adorned with geometric motifs. The sober yet warm palette - deep green, ochre, cream, touches of black and red - lends the scene a restrained intensity. Iconic elements - the golden lotus on the right, the stylized flower behind the ear, the raised hand gesture - enrich the symbolic reading: the nayikaa is a spiritual presence. Born in Margao, Goa, on January 21, 1926, Laxman Pai is one of the major figures of modern Indian painting. Trained at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay, where he also taught, he soon developed an artistic sensibility nourished by the luxuriant nature and vitality of his native Goa - a constant source of inspiration throughout his career. A committed activist in his youth, he took part in Gandhi's Satyagraha movement against British domination, then in the struggle for Goa's liberation from Portuguese colonial administration. Yet his work is never militant in the strict sense: it draws more on emotion, memory and the silent beauty of the world than on political demands. A self-proclaimed autodidact - "I'm my own guru", he used to say - he forged a highly personal style, enriched by his ten-year stay in Paris. Influenced by Paul Klee, Chagall and Miró, he fuses modern forms with traditional Indian iconography. He borrows stylized lines and flat tints from folk art, while introducing subtle geometry, a sense of rhythm and a flamboyant palette. His works, figurative and often spiritual, depict nature in all its richness - vegetation, animals, village scenes - but also human figures always integrated into their environment. "My paintings don't preach morality. They are spiritual impressions", he asserts. Far from discourse, his art is concerned with translating inner emotions, born of chance encounters or striking visions. Over the decades, his style has evolved: from silhouettes inspired by ancient Egyptian sculpture to softer, more fluid forms imbued with vibrant energy. His bold, luminous colors are reminiscent of ancient Indian miniatures, but with a contemporary exuberance that became his signature. Director of the Goa College of Art from 1977 to 1987, Laxman Pai received numerous honors: twice the national Lalit Kala Akademi prize (1961 and 1963), the Gomant Vibhushan (the highest civilian distinction in the State of Goa), the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan from the Indian government. He died in Dona Paula, Goa, on March 14, 2021, leaving behind a body of work of great humanity, celebrating nature, life and the beauty of the world.

To be sales tax exempt, a current sales tax exemption certificate, including sales tax exemption number, must be presented to RBFineArts CFL Inc to avoid paying sales tax. AUCTION CATALOGS: Catalogs, brochures, and internet descriptions are guides only based on information from sources believed to be reliable, but their accuracy cannot be guaranteed or warranted. The auctioneer will not be liable for any errors or omissions. Statements made by Auctioneer and/or staff of Auctioneer whether oral or written, are only opinions and should not be construed as statements of fact. All measurements are approximate. a) Rugs: RBFineArts CFL Inc does not guarantee the names or patterns of any Oriental rugs. All rug dimensions are approximate. b) Jewelry: Regarding jewelry, all weights, grades, sizes, and metal content(s) are approximate. c) Clocks and Watches: Due to their delicate nature, all clocks and watches are sold as not working even though they may be working. d) Antiques: Antiques, by the very nature of their age, have wear that reflects their years of use. As a result, honest wear from use is to be expected and is sometimes the proof that an item is an antique. Normal wear will not be noted in the description. e) Artwork: Because artwork is known to be copied from pre-existing examples, the dating of such objects is often difficult to ascertain and opinions vary from expert to expert. Due to this, RBFineArts CFL Inc strongly suggests all potential bidders or a representative to meticulously inspect any and all items prior to bidding. Any reference to a specific time period and/or culture are only the opinion of RBFineArts CFL Inc and are not a guarantee of authenticity. If the bidder or a representative cannot inspect an item in person prior to the auction, then RBFineArts CFL Inc strongly suggests that you do not place a bid on the lot. Buyers who would like to know the fine points regarding the condition should call 877-660-3271 or (352) 508-5738 or info@rbfinearts.net, prior to the auction. RBFineArts CFL Inc advises buyers to examine the item before placing a bid. All other guarantees of authenticity of authorship, expressed or implied, are hereby disclaimed. We are not an authentication service. We can only declare the work as attributed to based upon the factors mentioned in the specific lot listed. There is no other warranty, expressed, or implied. Each lot is sold AS IS. All sales are final, and all property is sold "as is." RBFineArts CFL Inc. does not give refunds. Note: If an unpaid item/s has been relisted in a future auction catalog there will be a $100.00 removal penalty per item, plus any storage penalties, before it will be released for shipping or pickup. If the item/s has not been relisted there will only be storage penalties of $10.00 per item per day before it can be released for shipping or pickup. REGISTRATION: Bidder must register for the Auction before his/her bid will be accepted. Proper identification and credit card information will be required. Auctioneer reserves the right to refuse to register any prospective bidder for any reason. CUSTOMER AND CLIENT CONDUCT: While visiting our gallery to preview auction items, to pick up any items, or to drop off any items, should you act in a way that causes offense or might cause danger to others or which risks damage to property belonging to others you will be asked to promptly leave, and face law enforcement being called. Further, RBFineArts CFL Inc reserves the right to hold you liable for reimbursement for any expenses incurred because of any damage or injury. We expect all correspondence by phone or online to be respectful, any rude, harassing, or offensive behavior may result in actions including canceled sales and/or being blocked on all bidding platforms and in extreme cases being reported to law enforcement. Any request to alter documents with the intent to defraud insurance or government entities will be summarily declined and reported to appropriate authorities. ABSENTEE BIDS: Please adhere to the bidding increments. It is possible that an item could go to another bidder for the same amount as your absentee bid. For example, if your maximum Internet bid on an item is $325.00 and the required opening bid is $300.00, the Internet auction software will only bid $300.00 since that is all that is required to start the Auction. The Auction begins with you at $300.00. The next increment would be $325.00, if no one else bids you will be declared the winner. If a live auction bidder bids $325.00, they are at $325.00, not you. We always encourage bidders to bid by phone or to leave absentee bids through our gallery to avoid this. To make an absentee bid with our physical location instead of an online absentee bid, please call the storefront at 1-877-660-3271 or (352) 508-5738. AUCTION PROCEDURES: RBFineArts CFL Inc. auctions items at approximately 60 lots per hour. Occasionally, the bidding software or your internet connection may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction or the floor may respond before the internet bid is presented to the auctioneer. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid for the live Internet auction before the auction begins as insurance to avoid this. Occasionally, the Auctioneer may eliminate or reject an Internet bid, or the auctioneer may reopen a lot after the close of the live internet bidding. In this case, we may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via the internet, you agree that RBFineArts CFL Inc. may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Internet bids are treated just like floor bids. The Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bids that are deemed inappropriate or withdraw any item before or during the sale. In the unlikely event internet connection is lost during a live Auction, RBFineArts CFL Inc. Auction Services reserves the right in its sole and absolute discretion to cancel the remainder of the auction. ESTIMATES AND RESERVES: Pre-sale estimates are intended as guides and may not be reflective of the actual gavel price. Some of the items in this Auction are subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by both the consignor and RBFineArts CFL Inc. Buyers should assume that all listed items are reserved unless otherwise stated. We reserve the right to bid on behalf of consignors up to, but not more than, the reserve to protect against selling at a price below the reserve. This will be accomplished as necessary by a proxy placing successive bids, or bids in response to buyer's bids. Auctioneers reserve the right to invoke Auctioneer's discretion at any time during the bidding process. 'Three faces', signed and dated 'Laxman Pai / 1976' (upper right); titled, signed and dated again (on the reverse), oil on canvas, 98x126 cm, , Provenance:-With Dhoomimal Gallery (DMG) Delhi (remnants of a label attached on the reverse), Laxman Pai was born in 1926 in Margao, Goa. He studied art at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai from 1943 to 1947. He was awarded the prestigious Mayo medal. His canvases are densely populated with nature in all her moods, and his human characters are always depicted in relation with their environment. All of Pai's art is a reflection of his impressions and it is free from any commentary. Most of his work is based on chance encounters and experiences that have left a mark on his mind be it good or evil. His earlier paintings borrowed generously from ancient Egyptian sculptures with bodies that were portrayed front on with the faces in profile. The vibrant hues that are so characteristic of his art got bolder and brighter with each painting reminiscent of the miniatures of early Indian art, Pai has created a body of work that is as diverse and colourful as life itself. For him, all beauty in its myriad manifestations was an unending source of inspiration. And it is this natural beauty that became the prism through which he explored a supreme spiritual consciousness in his works. For him, art was pure spiritual expression, fired by the soul, untouched by ideology and commentary of any kind. Laxman Pai has had over a hundred solo exhibitions, of these nine have been in Paris where he worked for 10 years (1951-61). His other exhibitions have been in London, Munich, Stuttgart, Bremen, New York, San Francisco, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, New Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta and Goa. He has also participated in Bribable San Paulo, Brazil. Laxman Pai has been a recipient of three Lalit Kala national awards (1961, 1963 & 1972). He was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri by the government of India in 1985.Source: www.dhoomimalgallery.art
